The SOCT Copernicus system complies with all requirements of the directive 93/42/EEC
(MDD - Medical Devices Directive).
The SOCT Copernicus is Type B, Class I protection
Usually SOCT Copernicus is a part of larger Medical System, which consists of many other
medical and non- medical devices. Medical system in general and all its components have
to fulfil requirements of IEC-60601 norm.
In order to comply with the IEC-60601 norm all non Medical Devices must be connected to
the Separating Transformer which is supplied with the SOCT Copernicus. By connecting the
devices to the Separating Transformer leakage current is reduced to a level which is in line
with the IEC norm.
The Separating Transformer fulfils requirements of IEC-60601-1 norm for medical devices
which has not application part.
The Separating Transformer supply the power for non medical devices connected to
electric not grounded mains in room.
The Separating Transformer can be installed in patient environment in accordance with
IEC-60601-1 norm.
Please note that only the PC, monitor and printer are to be connected to the Isolating
Transformer. Connecting non medical devices in other way than in diagram on page 13 can
lead to electric shock or damage the devices.
Prohibit connect any non medical or medical devices which are not including with
SOCT Copernicus system to the Separating Transformer e.g. lamp, vacuum cleaner
etc.
The SOCT Copernicus must not be connected to the transformer, but directly to the mains
socket.
SOCT Copernicus is connected to computer using RS232 cable. This cable is electrically
separated using optocouplers. It provides additional safety, when computer and SOCT
Copernicus device are connected to two different power supply sockets with different
ground potentials. Video signal and synchronization signal are transferred to computer
using coaxial cables, which are electrically separated from SOCT Copernicus device
providing even more safe solution.
No user serviceable parts inside SOCT Copernicus device. Light source is included inside
device. Removing of covers can be done only by authorized personnel.
The maximum power of light radiation available outside covers is
less than 750 (+3% -0,5%) microwatts providing safe operation of the device.
Objective lens is output of light.
SOCT Copernicus has been classified as CLASS 1 LASER DEVICE
Warning !
1) If SOCT Copernicus and the whole Medical System have been installed by the
Manufacturer, the Manufacturer guarantees the proper installation and
compliance with MDD 93/42 EEC rules. It is customers’ responsibility to prepare
the site.
2) Any computer system or device attached to SOCT Copernicus must be MDD
compliant or be plugged only to Separating Transformer. Devices which are not
related with patient examination (e.g. lamp, fan) cannot be connected to
Separating Transformer.
3) Multiple portable socket-outlets shall not be placed on the floor.
Warning !
All activities that demand removing main body housing may be performed by qualified
personnel only.
Ignoring or disregarding the statements above may lead to danger of death or serious
injury.
6. Technical Data
Signal source: Super Luminescent Diode (SLED), 840 nm
7. Environmental Conditions
Operation:
Temperature in the SOCT room should ideally remain between 65 º to 80 ºF, (18-27 ºC) both for
patient comfort and for optimum operation of the unit. Patients may feel discomfort when
temperature in the room is excessively high. Maximum operating temperature is 104 ºF (40 ºC) is
allowed.
Transport/storage:
Temperature: +0 º - +55 º C

Step 2
Latch is opened
Now shift SOCT Copernicus to the left and then lift it up. Put the SOCT on the flat stable
table.
After unpacking one should check the whole set for any mechanical damages, cables
damages, etc. In case any damage is found, don't connect the device and contact your
local distributor.
Important!
It's strongly recommended to wait at least one hour before turning the device on for the first time
after delivery. It's mostly important in case where the delivery was made during low outside
temperatures or high humidity.

2. Read entire manual first before you start opening the SOCT.
3. BE CARREFUL WHEN YOU ARE OPENING THE SOCT. DO NOT REPLACE POSITION OF OPTIC
COMPONENTS. If you move a position of optics probably you will have to send back the
unit to the Optopol for calibration. Especially do not touch the optic fibre (Red arrows).
4. Run a program scantest_lt.exe, set down position of the chinrest. Set position of head:
maximum to top, maximum to back and in a middle between left and right. Turn off the SOCT
Copernicus.
10. Mark the position of the bold in relation to the main body. You can use a pencil, marker or paint.
12. Remove the screws from a front bolt. See green arrows
13. Remove the metal bolt. Hold the bolt and the frame at one side. On the opposite side shift bold
(yellow arrow) and remove the bolt from the frame.
15. Take out the metal bold from the frame. See point 13.
18. Start unscrewing CCW (Counter Clock Wise) left screw. Do only few rotations and repeat that
function with a right screw. DO NOT INCREASE THE NUMBER OF ROTATIONS. IT CAN LEAD TO
BRAKING OFF THE SCREW LATCHES. REMOVE SCREWS EVENLY.
19. Shift the SOCT to the opposite side of the table and repeat step 16.

20. Repeat steps 16 and 17 e.g. 4 times until the cover is unscrewed.
23. Lift the cover and unplug the external fixation connector. Do not try to do it alone. Ask someone
to assist you. In newest versions, connector comes out with head rest, and there is no danger of
breaking it.
- Lift the cover for half of height of the head. DO NOT TOUCH the optic fibre.
- Philips-head screwdriver.
2. Read the entire manual first before you close the SOCT.
3. Always replace used screws and washers with new ones, even if used only once!
4. BE CAREFUL WHEN BEING CLOSE TO THE SOCT. DO NOT REPLACE POSITION OF OPTIC
COMPONENTS. If you move a position of optics probably you will have to send back the
unit to Optopol for calibration. Especially do not touch the optic fibre (Red arrows).

19. Turn on the SOCT and set a position of the head to the bottom. Screw in screws from
rear bolt. Change the position of the head in order to make access to screws easier. Turn
the device off.
20. Place the position of the frame parallel to the cover. Check that distance is aligned in
every corner to the same height.
23. Push the lens gently. In newest models equipped with servomechanisms, we sugest to
move refraction maximum to the back position in the scantest program, Although there
is possibility to move it by hand, but special attention must be given to this activity.
24. Turn the device on. Use the software in order to set the correct position of the head.
(Maximum to the top, maximum to the back and in the middle between left and right). Install

In a warmed up spectrometer you should get band height at least 2700 to 3300. Band width should
be at least 940.
9. If the spectrum is too low (example picture below) do the following procedure:
Operator has choice use a three mode to adjust spectrometer. Two automatic and one manual.
2. [FULL] mode when signal drop and [FAST] mode cannot reach optimal value. After start
this mode wait until system obtain optimal spectrum.
3. Manual mode. Operator can calibrate the spectrometer semi manually. Arrows identify
the screws. Rules of alignment are that same like in handy adjusted system. Details see
in chapter 10.1
1. Turn on the program skantest, run Scan + Mov and Sled then go to the bookmark Sled. If
there is no signal, as it is shown below, make a measurement of the power in objective lane (
see: Checking and adjusting power on objective lane). If power is correct use function Up_Dn
or Dn_Up.
If peak is moved on right or left it is not incorrect. It is important that the spectrum width cannot
exceed 80.
4. Check the power on objective lane if the power is incorrect arrange correct value/ the right
value. ( see: Checking of SLED output power, checking attenuator). Even if you arrange
correct value of power, peak is still too high you can lower its height using filter on reference
lane ( see: Regulation of filter on reference lane).
5. If the power from objective lane is correct, lower peak high using filter on reference lane (
see: Regulation of filter on reference lane).
2. Open soct cover ( see: Opening cover), then turning correct screws of the trolley web AVIIVA,
set peak.
3. Turn the right screw in accordance with clockwise if the peak is getting wider turn the screw
in the opposite direction ( make turnover of 1800) and then turn the screw from the left side
in the same way. Turn alternately until you will get the highest peak ( always turn each of
screw of 1800)
5. Using commands Full calibrate spectrometer. The picture below shows window’s program
after inclusion of function Full.
7. If you have the correct spectrum, turn off program skantest, turn on program Copernicus and
perform control scan.
1. When the spectrum on skantest is too low after turning on and using function Fast.
2. Measure the power from the objective lane ( see: Checking of SLED output power, checking
attenuator). When the power is incorrect arrange it to the normal value.
3. Make sure that the high of spectrum returned to the normal range ( 3000-3700). If the height
is correct go to point 4.5).
2. Measure the power from the objective lane (see: Checking and adjusting power on objective
line). When the power is incorrect arrange it to the normal value.
3. The head of Power meter install on objective lens of SPOCT Copernicus and turn up screw.
1 2
10. Use a hexagonal tool size 1.5 to rotate first screw about 45 degree, all time you control value
on power meter.
When you set up correctly value on objective lane, check the properly settings spectrum in skantest
program. If spectrum is correct then go to point 13, if spectrum is incorrect then go to the point 14. .
12. Turn off tap, remove head of power meter from objective lens of SPOCT Copernicus, turn off
program skantest, turn on program Copernicus and do control scan.
If spectrum is incorrect ( for example: too high or too low) (see: Manual Spectrometer or Auto
spectrometer).
2. Mark scan+Mov and then SLED. When you switch on SLED, don’t look into objective lens!!!
6. Press Run button. You will hear how scanners work. Now you can look at objective lens.
8. Look into objective lens. You will see red cross and green fixation point. If the setup is
correct, fixation point is in the centre cross. If the setup is correct don’t read this instruction,
if is incorrect go to the next point.
13. If the beam does not fall in the centre, continue with following steps. If beam is in centre
position, and fixation still isn’t in the centre of the cross perform operations described in
point 19
14. Remove upper part of the cover (see: Opening cover).
15. On the holder of diachronic mirror you will find three screws.
1 2
16. By screwing-in and screwing-out consecutive screws ( observing image from the webcam At
the same time) set the beam in the right position. Rotating screw number 1 clockwise causes
shifting the beam down and to the right. Rotating it counter-clockwise causes shifting up
17. After setting the beam in the centre of the cross, remove viewfinder.
18. Check if fixation point is in the centre of the cross. If not follow further instructions. If fixation
is in good position, proceed to the point 29
19. If beam is centred, and fixation is moved then fixation position needs to be set by regulating
of the mirror.
21. If fixation is moved up/down then regulate fixation point position by changing the angle of
the mirror.
22. If fixation point is moved left/right then detaching mirror will be needed.
23. While mirror is detached, add or take off some pads in order to set fixation in proper point.
Adding pads will move fixation to the left and taking them off will move it to the right.
Notice that pads can be squeezed by tightening the screws in order to achieve little more of
regulation range.
24. Attach mirror back to the unit and set the fixation to the proper point.
7. Rotate screws artificial eye set the band-height on highest value. During rotating observe
the spectrum.

3.12 Referring to the camera image set the beam position in centre by rotating X scanner. Rotation
of X scanner causes in horizontal movement of the beam.
3.14 Switch off program skantest and check collision between scanners.
4.1 If scanners are not destroyed mechanically and there is no signal on lens course check if there is
a beam outgoing from collimator.
4.2 To check if there is beam outgoing from collimator, use IR sensitive paper by placing it behind
collimator.
4.8 If beam is moved left or right follow the steps described in points 4.8-4.13. If beam is moved up
or down follow all next steps.
4.13 Close the cover (don’t follow this step if you have to adjust Y scanner too)(see: Closing cover).
4.15 Rotate the scanner all time monitoring view on the webcam.

Stop turning screws if you feel no resistance coming from it. If you will keep turning screw CCW
screw will go out off its position and you will have to open covers to reassembly it back.
1. Turn on program skantest, run Scan + Mov and Sled then go to bookmark Sled. Use function
Up_Dn or Dn_Up. To Change camera trolley position and cross spectrometer. To change the
position of trolley you can also use spectrometer manual control for left and right screw. To
see (adjusting spectrometer step-by-step)
4. After calibration note the spectrum height and outgoing power on the objective line.
5. Perform test for 2 hours, checking every 15 minutes spectrum height and outgoing power.
6. If in time of test spectrum drops more than 10% check if spectrometer isn’t tight assembled
with plastic covers
7. If so, then loosen little bit screws holding plastic cover and remove mounting tape if exists, so
spectrometer covers can move loosely on it.

5. Cross lines can be divided into rectangles or it can have the waveform.
6. If it is so, open the devices covers in order to gain access to the scanners electronic boards.
7. Adjust the grey potentiometer on the small board attached to the X board first. Rotate the
screw in one direction, if it doesn’t help try rotating in other.
8. All time while adjusting the potentiometers look into the objective lane.
9. If adjusting the X board didn’t help try to adjust the same potentiometer on the Y board.
Q2: The tomogram images have good quality, but the horizontal retina cross section
image is diagonal.
A2: See A1
A3: The scanning beam is not centred on the pupil in the vertical direction. This effect is
observed mostly for small pupils and wide scanning ranges (>6-7mm).Use joystick to
move the device’s measurement head slightly up or down to obtain best image
quality
Q4: The tomogram images have good quality, but the vertical tomogram image (right
image) is diagonal
A4: See A3
Q7: There are live retina cross section images visible, but the image quality if very poor
A7: Most common reason for this problem is the improper refraction compensation
setting. Once you have the retina image visible, try adjusting Refraction
compensation setting to obtain best image.
Q8: Live tomogram image is very dark and level Normal Incorrect
of noise is very low (very dark).
Q11: When ‘New examination’ button is pressed, windows firewall displays a warning
message and tries to block some functions of the program
Q12: Unit functioning in skantest program is proper, but in SOCT Copernicus software
there is no tomogram,
A12: Symptom indicates that there is problem with software or synchro cable. Check or
reinstall software or replace cable and perform tests.
Q13: Power measured on the exit of the diode is lower than 3,5mW.
A13: If diode have connectors between optic fibre outgoing from diode and coupler, the
power loss on the connectors is too high. Replace connectors.
If optic fibre is welded, and power is lower than 3,5mW, we qualify diode to be
exchanged.
Q14: Diode’s outgoing power is >=3,5mW, but on entrance to the scanners collimator
power is lower than 950 uW.
A14: It’s problem with the attenuator or optic fiber connector. Exchange the attenuator,
clean the optic fiber.
A15: Improper functioning scanner wire, or broken scanners. Check or exchange wire, if
that doesn’t help exchange scanners with wiring.
A16: It’s symptom of broken controller board or servomechanism. Exchange of the servo
controller board or servomechanism. Checking cables.
Q17: While testing power stability, power fluctuation extends allowed limits.
A18: Wrong outgoing power, spectrum is not pulled by the program, bad
polarization. Check outgoing power, spectrum height, polarization.
___________________________________________________________________________
A20: Perform asterisk scan on smaller amount of A-scans. Then you will be able to notice
that some of scans are inferior quality (it will be sliced). There is every indication that
scanners works improper.
___________________________________________________________________________
A23: Most probably Copernicus device was turned on earlier than computer.
Q28: Scanners squeal after turning on the device and after centring.
A28: Crossed scanner wires – check if scanner cables are placed properly.
Unregulated filters on the scanners boards – regulate the filter by gray potentiometer
on the scanners board
A31: Check correctness of attachment of all plugs on PSB board and motor control board
Q32: While normal movement of the SOCT head scanners change their status to error
status.
A32: Check correctness of the attachment scanners engines connectors, check correctness
of voltage in the main grid, check PSB board 150-520.
