4. Safety Standards
SOCT Copernicus/SPOCT system can be connected only to power supply socket
equipped with properly connected grounding pin.

The SOCT Copernicus system complies with all requirements of the directive 93/42/EEC
(MDD - Medical Devices Directive).
The SOCT Copernicus is Type B, Class I protection
Usually SOCT Copernicus is a part of larger Medical System, which consists of many other
medical and non- medical devices. Medical system in general and all its components have
to fulfil requirements of IEC-60601 norm.
In order to comply with the IEC-60601 norm all non Medical Devices must be connected to
the Separating Transformer which is supplied with the SOCT Copernicus. By connecting the
devices to the Separating Transformer leakage current is reduced to a level which is in line
with the IEC norm.
The Separating Transformer fulfils requirements of IEC-60601-1 norm for medical devices
which has not application part.
The Separating Transformer supply the power for non medical devices connected to
electric not grounded mains in room.
The Separating Transformer can be installed in patient environment in accordance with
IEC-60601-1 norm.

Please note that only the PC, monitor and printer are to be connected to the Isolating
Transformer. Connecting non medical devices in other way than in diagram on page 13 can
lead to electric shock or damage the devices.
Prohibit connect any non medical or medical devices which are not including with
SOCT Copernicus system to the Separating Transformer e.g. lamp, vacuum cleaner
etc.
The SOCT Copernicus must not be connected to the transformer, but directly to the mains
socket.

SOCT Copernicus is connected to computer using RS232 cable. This cable is electrically
separated using optocouplers. It provides additional safety, when computer and SOCT
Copernicus device are connected to two different power supply sockets with different
ground potentials. Video signal and synchronization signal are transferred to computer
using coaxial cables, which are electrically separated from SOCT Copernicus device
providing even more safe solution.

No user serviceable parts inside SOCT Copernicus device. Light source is included inside
device. Removing of covers can be done only by authorized personnel.
The maximum power of light radiation available outside covers is
less than 750 (+3% -0,5%) microwatts providing safe operation of the device.
Objective lens is output of light.
SOCT Copernicus has been classified as CLASS 1 LASER DEVICE

15. FAQ
Q1: The tomogram images have good
quality, but there is a shadow at
horizontal tomogram image (left
image) on the left or right edge
and the image is diagonal.

A1: The scanning beam is not centred

on the pupil in the horizontal
direction. This effect is observed mostly for small pupils and wide scanning ranges
(>6-7mm).Use joystick to move the device slightly left or right to obtain best image
quality.

Q2: The tomogram images have good quality, but the horizontal retina cross section
image is diagonal.
A2: See A1

Q3: The tomogram images have good

quality, but there is shadow at
vertical tomogram image (right
image) on the left or right edge
and image is diagonal

A3: The scanning beam is not centred on the pupil in the vertical direction. This effect is
observed mostly for small pupils and wide scanning ranges (>6-7mm).Use joystick to
move the device’s measurement head slightly up or down to obtain best image
quality

Q4: The tomogram images have good quality, but the vertical tomogram image (right
image) is diagonal

A4: See A3

Q5: Live tomogram images are

visible, but the retina image is
upside down.

A5: This means the measurement

head is too far away from patient. Use joystick to move the device’s measurement
head closer to patient. The retina cross section image will go down on the window
and then up again in a straight orientation

SOCT Copernicus / SPOCT - Service Manual

197
Q6: There is no fundus preview image. Just a blue or black background
A6: There are two possible reasons for this:
1. the video signal cable is not connected to PC

Make sure the s-video plug is

connected to relevant socket
in frame grabber card at the
back of computer.

2. the video input signal is incorrectly configured in SOCT application

Change video input signal into

S-video in configuration
window. Change Video source
signal into “AverMedia AverTV
WDM Video Capture (Silicon)”

Q7: There are live retina cross section images visible, but the image quality if very poor

A7: Most common reason for this problem is the improper refraction compensation
setting. Once you have the retina image visible, try adjusting Refraction
compensation setting to obtain best image.

SOCT Copernicus / SPOCT - Service Manual

198
___________________________________________________________________________
Q8: Live retina images are very poor and I’m sure I’ve set proper compensation of
refraction.

A8: 1. When front objective lens holder is moved manually

(by hand or by hitting patient’s eye brows) , the system
looses information about real compensation value. Quit
the program and wait for device to initialize its axes and
then start application again.
2. Check if the front objective lens is not dirty. If dirt is
noticed on front surface of lens, use soft cloth to clean it.

Q8: Live tomogram image is very dark and level Normal Incorrect
of noise is very low (very dark).

A8: The spectrometer inside device is

incorrectly tuned. Perform spectrometer
adjustment procedure according to service
manual. This operation can only be done by
authorized and trained service personnel.

Q9: There is no live retina image – just a black window, no noise.

A9: The synchronization cable or adapter cable is not connected or connected

improperly. Make sure the adapter cable (flat VHDCI connector) is properly
connected to frame grabber card. Make BNC connector is connected to synchro input
(T0 input)

SOCT Copernicus / SPOCT - Service Manual

199
Q10: When SOCT application
is started, windows
firewall displays a
warning message and
tries to block some
functions of the
program

A10: Such situation can

happen is SOCT
application is moved to
a different location on
disk. You should always
click “Unblock”.

Q11: When ‘New examination’ button is pressed, windows firewall displays a warning
message and tries to block some functions of the program

A11: See A10

Q12: Unit functioning in skantest program is proper, but in SOCT Copernicus software
there is no tomogram,
A12: Symptom indicates that there is problem with software or synchro cable. Check or
reinstall software or replace cable and perform tests.

Q13: Power measured on the exit of the diode is lower than 3,5mW.

A13: If diode have connectors between optic fibre outgoing from diode and coupler, the
power loss on the connectors is too high. Replace connectors.

If optic fibre is welded, and power is lower than 3,5mW, we qualify diode to be
exchanged.

Q14: Diode’s outgoing power is >=3,5mW, but on entrance to the scanners collimator
power is lower than 950 uW.

A14: It’s problem with the attenuator or optic fiber connector. Exchange the attenuator,
clean the optic fiber.

SOCT Copernicus / SPOCT - Service Manual

200
Q15: While performing movement in X,Y,Z axis in SOCT program, you are able to notice
scanners turning off. At the same time scanner status diodes shine with red light.

A15: Improper functioning scanner wire, or broken scanners. Check or exchange wire, if
that doesn’t help exchange scanners with wiring.

Q16: After connecting servomechanisms to the controlling board, servomechanisms shows

no reaction to the controller signal.

A16: It’s symptom of broken controller board or servomechanism. Exchange of the servo
controller board or servomechanism. Checking cables.

Q17: While testing power stability, power fluctuation extends allowed limits.

A17: Unstable attenuator functioning. Readjust attenuator again (following attenuator

adjusting rules) and after one hour of cooling perform test again. If that doesn’t help
exchange attenuator with new one and after cooling the unit perform test again.

Q18: Scan’s saturation is low.

A18: Wrong outgoing power, spectrum is not pulled by the program, bad
polarization. Check outgoing power, spectrum height, polarization.

Q19: Fuzzy scans, bad dispersion- dispersion settings are improper.

A19: Change dispersion in setup file, perform the control scan.

SOCT Copernicus / SPOCT - Service Manual

201
Q20: While performing the scans, you can notice that one scans quality is inferior than
others. Single B-scan quality is good, also asterisk scan performed with maximal
amount of A-scans is good.

A20: Perform asterisk scan on smaller amount of A-scans. Then you will be able to notice
that some of scans are inferior quality (it will be sliced). There is every indication that
scanners works improper.

If so: exchange scanners.

___________________________________________________________________________

Q21: While performing scans, it’s able to notice that on

height about 700 scan is almost invisible.

A21: Perform spectrometer stability test, check CL cables.

Bad scan Good scan

Q22: Vertical line appears on tomogram on height about 200

A22: The beamsplitter functions improper. While checking clearness of

optic fiber connectors, (in dark room and reference line signal
covered) using soct tools program, you can notice the parasiting signal. It’s probably
reflection in optic fibre connection point in beamsplitter. Clean the fiber optics, if
doesn’t help exchange the beamsplitter.

SOCT Copernicus / SPOCT - Service Manual

202
Q23: While turning the program Copernicus, UNABLE TO CONNECT error appears

A23: Most probably Copernicus device was turned on earlier than computer.

Always turn computer first to avoid errors!

Q24: Vertical line appears on tomogram on height about 500.

A24: The beamsplitter optic fiber connectors are dirty. Most

check beamsplitter connector on the objective line for dirt.
Clean connectors.

Q25: Vertical line appears on tomogram on height about 400.

A25: Line usually comes from AVIVA camera. By

adjusting AVIVA camera angle, try to eliminate line.
Check if spectrometer works properly.

Q26: Sharp vertical line appears on tomogram on height about

25-50

A26: Line comes from AVIVA camera. As for today knowledge

it’s impossible to eliminate that line. If line is visible on
the tomograms and preview (isn’t covered by
background) the AVIVA camera needs to be replaced.
Intensity of the line is different for each camera.

SOCT Copernicus / SPOCT - Service Manual

203
Q27: Vertical line appears on tomogram on height about
50 after 30 minutes disperses to the trail.

A27: Line comes from the camera. If after camera have

warmed (about 30 min.) it disperses and is barely
visible on the camera, we leave it and do nothing. If
it’s strongly visible, we replace the camera.

Q28: Scanners squeal after turning on the device and after centring.

A28: Crossed scanner wires – check if scanner cables are placed properly.

Unregulated filters on the scanners boards – regulate the filter by gray potentiometer
on the scanners board

Broken scanner controller or engine – exchange scanners

Q29: No scanner engines control

A29: Broken CPU board 150-505 – replace CPU board
