1.1.2. This Part 0 should be read alongside Part 1 (this document). Part 0 provides the background
and guidance on how this standard shall be applied to projects. The other Parts of the
standard provide technical requirements and guidance to support the application of the
technical requirements.
1.2. AS GVA Assumptions
1.2.1. The development of the AS GVA is based on six assumptions. These assumptions will be
reviewed to ensure that they are still relevant or have been superseded. The assumptions are
that unless an exception is approved by HLC:
a) All future LCS vehicle and interdependent sub-system specifications will mandate the use
of the AS GVA standard to ensure they meet the requirements of the AS GVA approach;
b) All future LCS vehicle and interdependent sub-systems will be constructed based upon
AS GVA principles and requirements to integrate and interoperate with the AS GVA and
non-AS GVA compliant platform infrastructure;
c) There will be a transition period where legacy vehicle or interdependent sub-systems
may be used in conjunction with a AS GVA based electronic infrastructure;
d) Where approved legacy vehicles and interdependent sub-systems are used, adapters
and / or gateways may be required between this equipment and the infrastructure for
both data transfer and the supply of power;
e) Automotive sub-systems will continue to be aligned to the wider automotive standards,
(e.g. SAE J1939), and will require a gateway to an AS GVA compliant infrastructure; and
f) The AS GVA Office will control the definition of interfaces through the development of this
Standard, agreement of specific open standards, use of Interface Control Documents
(ICDs), definition of standardised platform common services, and the development of the
Australian Land Data Model (AS LDM).

2. AS GVA Data Infrastructure

2.1. Introduction
2.1.1. This part of the Standard, Part 1, defines the design constraints on the electronic interfaces
and protocols that form the AS GVA Infrastructure, including the physical cables and
connectors that provide means of distributing data around a vehicle platform. It also includes
any enabling logical components and functions e.g. interface software, transport protocols and
message definitions. Defining and standardising these common elements enables
interoperability between platform [sub-system]s and also reduces the time taken to integrate
new [sub-system]s. The aim however is to minimise the impact of these constraints on design
options as little as possible to allow for flexibility and innovation.
2.1.2. A complete generic requirements set, containing the appropriate measures of performance,
justifications and verification methods for an AS GVA Infrastructure can be found at Annex B.
2.1.3. Where the requirements of this Standard deviate from the UK Standard, the requirements will
be emphasised using italics. The requirements that have been modified from the UK GVA,
and appear in this Part are:

2.2. AS GVA Data Infrastructure
2.2.1. The AS GVA data infrastructure consists of:
a. One or more physical or virtual Local Area Networks (LANs) for data distribution, video
distribution and [sub-system] control;
b. Network connectors for peripheral devices;
c. Network connectors to other networks;
d. Platform services, including time services; and
e. AS LDM (covered in Part 5) and the DDS/DDSI wire protocol.
4
2.2.2. Figure 3 illustrates the layered protocol model to be adopted by AS GVA . AS GVA will adopt
a pragmatic approach to platform integration, with the use of both published and governed
industry standards (such as ITU, IETF) and government standards (such as DEF STAN, MIL
STD and DEF (AUST)). Where an industry standard has universal acceptance (e.g. NTP,
DNS, SIP, ITU Voice and Video recommendations etc.), and the data exchange is not
described in the AS LDM, the AS GVA will consider the continued use of these existing
standards. Exchange of Vetronics, C4I and other service specific data contained in the AS
LDM shall use the DDS/DDSI for interoperability. Non-compliant [sub-systems] will bridge on
to the DSS/DDSI bus using an interface, as illustrated in Figure 2.

2.3. AS GVA Interface Panel
2.3.1. The AS GVA Interface panel provides the primary connection point for data and power to
installed [sub-system]s. New [sub-system]s integrated into vehicles must use the power and
data capabilities of the AS GVA interface panel. This will provide a standardised method of
connection and reduced timescales and costs of integration. Table 1 details the requirements
for the AS GVA Interface Panel.
2.3.2. It should be noted that the AS GVA Interface Panel does not have to be a single panel; it can
be a distributed panel. The decision of have a single or multiple panels is a design decision.

2.4.1. IEEE 802.3-2012, Ethernet: 802.3 is a standard specification for Ethernet, a method of
physical connection in a local area network (LAN). The standard is maintained by the Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). In general, 802.3 specifies the physical media
and the working characteristics of Ethernet.
2.4.2. Specifying a set of minimum requirements for vehicle platform LANs improves interoperability
of present and future equipment.

2.5. AS GVA Ethernet Connectors

2.5.1. In order to ensure that there is physical connectivity standardization between an AS GVA
UNCONTROLLED WHEN PRINTED

compliant vehicle platform and AS GVA ready [sub-system]s and components data
connectors require standardisation.
2.5.2. Different connector orientations are specified in this standard to add physical protection
against the accidental connection of equipment to an incorrect security domain.
2.5.3. Although this standard specifies the connectors to be used, system performance is highly
dependent on the cabling and construction methods for the complete harnesses. MIL-DTL
38999 connectors were not specifically designed for high capacity data transmission.
Subsequently, extreme care needs to be taken in the cable terminations and shielding when
using these connectors. Each vehicle integrator will have a standard for cable harness
construction for their platforms and AS GVA based harnesses should comply as much as
possible with those specifications. However, it may be necessary to deviate from the normal
standards to maintain network data performance.
2.5.4. This standard includes the provision of a high bandwidth, 10 Gigabyte Ethernet fibre optic
based network. This provision is included to facilitate expected future expansion in the volume
of data that is expected to be transmitted within and between vehicle platforms. In particular,
this network would facilitate the uptake of Digital and High definition real-time Video transfer
within and between platforms. The extent to which a 10 Gigabyte Ethernet fibre based
network infrastructure is required and the subsequent accessibility requirements at the AS
GVA Interface panels for this network should be determined during platform design and stated
in the platform FPS.
2.5.5. In order to correctly implement a 10 Gigabyte Ethernet fibred based network, the
specifications of the fibre-optic cable used to implement the network must align with
IEC 60793.
2.5.6. Table 3 details the requirements relating to the Ethernet connectors used in the AS GVA Data
infrastructure.

carried on networks will comply with the AS GVA Standard, nor may be required by the AS-
GVA networks. This data may be of a proprietary nature. Where the networks contain data
defined within the AS Land Data Model, systems should be evaluated to be modified to make
the data available on the AS GVA Data Infrastructure.

connectors will enable connection of equipment across AS GVA compliant platforms.
3.3.2. This Standard does not specify the current rating of the AS GVA power outlets. This is a
requirement that must be determined through the vehicle design process.
3.3.3. The power architecture designer must ensure appropriate circuit protection measures are in
place to prevent damage to connectors and cables. These circuit protection measures may be
network configurable.
3.3.4. Where the standard AS GVA connectors are not deemed suitable by the project or design
office for a particular application, a waiver may be sought by providing reasons and suggested
alternatives to the AS GVA Office. A waiver must be granted prior to non-AS GVA compliant
connectors being used.
3.3.5. The specification of multiple pin pairs in the power connectors may imply that current sharing
is allowed. The use of both power paths through a connector is allowed but it is only
recommended where the paths feed separate [sub-system]s or components. If sharing is
implemented to one load, then appropriate protection measures must be fitted to protect
against thermal events in the connector/ pins and cables.
3.3.6. Requirements Table 14 details the requirements relating to the Power Interfaces.

3.4. Power Provision and Conditioning

3.4.1. Power Conditioning
3.4.2. DEF(AUST) 11326 Issue 1 provides power conditioning criteria and expansion
recommendations and guidelines regarding power outlet quantities. The quantity of outlets
being dependent on vehicle configuration and equipment fit.
3.4.3. Any power conditioner may need to stabilise voltage, filter input and output supplies and
improve transient response. The conditioning required will be dependent upon the platform
supply, power management systems, cabling and the power demand from the system.
3.4.4. EMC Requirements
3.4.5. Interference often poses a risk, limiting compatibility between new and legacy sub-systems.
This aspect should therefore not be overlooked. Subsequently, it is important to ensure all
[sub-system]s, that are connected to the vehicle’s power infrastructure are compatible in
terms of Electro-Magnetic (EMC) and other sources of interference.

3.5. Interfaces to other platforms
3.5.1. External Interfaces to AS GSA and AS GBA compliant platforms will be required for both
power and data transfer. In time these interfaces will be defined as part of the LCSI. Until the
LCSI is developed, these interfaces will be catered for in platform level architectures. Interface
responsibility between platform architectures is as follows:
3.5.2. AS GVA. AS GVA will provide power and data interfaces at crew/soldier locations for
expected dismounted soldiers as defined during platform design. The exact power and data
connector is to be determined, but is likely to be Ethernet based.
3.5.3. AS GSA. AS GSA will define a ‘bridge’ between the vehicle based connector and the soldier
system. This is to enable what will likely be a more rapid iteration of soldier based data and
power connectors.
3.5.4. AS GBA. AS GBA is yet to be defined. As such, interfaces between AS GVA and AS GBA
cannot yet be stated. It is anticipated that the AS GVA provision for interface panels would be
the access point for interface between a vehicle and base (or headquarters). Access
requirements for this panel should be considered during platform design to ensure that user
needs are met.
3.5.5. Table 20 details the requirements relating to the AS GVA External Interfaces.
