2. Let V be an inner product space over C and T be a normal operator on V . Suppose that T 10 = T 8 .
Prove that T is self-adjoint and that T 3 = T . [4]
Ans: If a is an eigen value of T , then a10 = a8 . So a8 (a2 − 1) = 0 and hence the eigen values of A are
{0, 1, −1}. Since T is normal, it is diagonalizable and so there exists a basis of eigen vectors. If v is an
eigen vector corresponding any of the three eigenvalues then T 3 (v) = T (v). So T 3 and T have the same
value on any basis element and hence T 3 = T .
3. Prove that there is no 3 × 3 matrix A over Q such that A8 = I but A4 6= I. [3]
Ans: A satisfy the polynomial x8 − 1 = (x4 − 1)(x4 + 1). If A4 6= I then the minimal polynomial of A
divides X 4 + 1. Now since X 4 + 1 can not be factored over Q, the minimal polunomial is x4 + 1 which is
absurd.

4. Let V be the space of polynomials in one variable over C with inner product (f, g) = 0 f (t)g(t)dt. Let
f be a polynomial and let Tf be the operator on V defined by Tf (g) = f g. Find the adjoint of Tf . [4]
R1 R1
Ans: (Tf (g), h) = (f g, h) = 0 f (t)g(t)h(t)dt = 0 g(t)(f (t)h(t))dt = (g, f h) = (g, Tf (h)). So by definition
the adjoint is Tf .
