PRACTICAL WORK 6
TITLE Direct On Line Motor Control
OBJECTIVES i. Construct Direct on line Motor Control.
Preparation Required
• Setup Three Phase Power Supply Control Unit.
• Setup Variable Three Phase AC Power Supply.
• Setup AC Measurement Unit.
• Setup Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor.
INTRODUCTION:
A DOL starter (also known as a direct on line starter or across the line starter) is a method
of starting a 3 phase induction motor. In a DOL Starter, an induction motor is connected
directly across its 3-phase supply, and the DOL starter applies the full line voltage to the motor
terminals.
VAC = 0 ~ 415VAC, KM1 = Magnetic Contactor, FT1 = Thermal Overload Relay, V1 = 500V
AC Voltmeter, A1 = 10A AC Ammeter, M1 = Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor.
Please take note that this experiment involves high voltage supply. Read and follow the
precaution and instruction to work safe.

Procedures:
1) Prepare Three Phase Power Supply Control Unit (PSC-3P-01) and Variable Three Phase
AC/DC Power Supply Unit (PSU-3P-02), AC Measurement Unit (PM-01), Contactor and
Overload Relay Module (COR-01), Switch Module (SWM-01), Three Phase Squirrel Cage
Induction Motor.
2) Setup Control Unit, Variable Three Phase AC Power Supply and AC Measurement Unit.
3) Turn off the power of Control Unit and Variable Three Phase AC Power Supply.
4) On Variable Three Phase AC Power Supply, tune the knob of Variable Output Control to
0V.
Tune the variable power supply to minimum or zero before turn ON the power unless
otherwise specified.
5) Refer to Wiring Diagram. Use the connecting lead cord with safety plug to construct above
AC power circuit.
6) Configure Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor as Configuration 1.
7) On Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor, connect point Z together with point X and
point Y.
8) Use Variable Three Phase AC Power Supply, Magnetic Contactor (KM1) and Thermal
Overload Relay (FT1) to construct Power Circuits for Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction
Motor.
9) From Three Phase AC Output on Variable Three Phase AC Power Supply to Magnetic
Contactor (KM1) on Magnetic Contactor Module. Connect point L1 to point R1, connect
point L2 to point S1 and connect point L3 to point T1.
10) On Magnetic Contactor Module, connect point U1 to point R2, connect point V1 to point
S2 and connect point W1 to point T2.
11) Connect point U2 of Thermal Overload Relay (FT1) on Magnetic Contactor Module to point
I+ of AC Ammeter – 1 on AC Measurement Unit.
12) Connect point I- of AC Ammeter – 1 to point A on Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction
Motor.
13) Connect point V2 of Thermal Overload Relay (FT1) on Magnetic Contactor Module to point
B on Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor.
14) Connect point W2 of Thermal Overload Relay (FT1) on Magnetic Contactor Module to
point C on Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor.
15) Connect point A on Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor to point V+ of AC
Voltmeter - 1 on AC Measurement Unit.
16) Connect point B on Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor to point V- of AC Voltmeter
- 1 on AC Measurement Unit.
17) Use Emergency Push Button (PB6), Push Button Switch (PB2 and PB4), Magnetic
Contactor (KM1) and Thermal Overload Relay (FT1) to construct Control Circuit for Three
Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor.
18) Connect point L3 on Control Unit to point J10 of PB6 on Switch Module. PB6 is use as the
Emergency Switch.
19) On Switch Module, connect point K10 of PB6 to point P8 of PB4. PB4 is use as the Stop

Switch.
20) On Switch Module, connect point Q8 of PB4 to point J8 of PB2. PB2 is use as the Start
Switch.
21) Connect point J8 of PB2 on Switch Module to point J1 of Magnetic Contactor (KM1) on
Magnetic Contactor Module.
22) Connect point K8 of PB2 on Switch Module to point K1 of Magnetic Contactor (KM1) on
Magnetic Contactor Module.
23) On Magnetic Contactor Module, connect point K1 to point P2 and connect point Q2 to
point M1.
24) Connect point N on Control Unit to point N1 of Magnetic Contactor (KM1) on Magnetic
Contactor Module.
25) On Switch Module, rotate Emergency Push Button (PB6) in clockwise direction to reset
Emergency Switch.
26) On Magnetic Contactor Module, set Thermal Overload Relay (FT1) to 1.6A and RESET
button (in green color) to mode “H”. Then press RESET button to initial Thermal Overload
Relay.
27) Turn on Control Unit and Variable Three Phase AC Power Supply.
28) AC Voltmeter – 1 display V1 and AC Ammeter – 1 display A1.
29) V1 is supply voltage to Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor and A1 is supply
current to Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor.
30) Make sure Variable Three Phase AC Power Supply is Zero Output. Perform functionality
test of control circuits.
31) Press Start Switch (PB2) to turn on Magnetic Contactor (KM1), then press Stop Switch
(PB4), Emergency Switch (PB6) and TEST button (in red color) of Thermal Overload Relay
(FT1) to turn off Magnetic Contactor (KM1).
32) After functionality test is done. Turn off Magnetic Contactor (KM1) and reset everything.
33) On Variable Three Phase AC Power Supply, slowly tune the knob of Variable Output
Control in clockwise direction to increase the supply voltage and set the AC voltage to
100VAC.
34) Press Start Switch (PB2) to turn on Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor. If Motor
won’t start running, it may due to supply voltage is not enough to drive the motor or
improper hardware setup.
35) On Variable Three Phase AC Power Supply, slowly tune the knob of Variable Output
Control in clockwise direction to increase the supply voltage and set the AC voltage to
415VAC.
36) Observe the direction and speed of motor while increase the supply voltage. Record the
reading of voltmeter and ammeter for V1 and A1.
37) Press Stop Switch (PB4) to turn off Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor.
38) Tune the knob of Variable Output Control to 0V and turn off Variable Three Phase AC
Power Supply and Control Unit.
39) Comment on your observation.
