Course – Research Methodology
Topic – Prepare a write-up on “The Importance of Research in Academics” (up
to 500-800 words)

Research is a systematic research process that involves gathering information; documentation

of critical information; and the analysis and interpretation of these data according to
appropriate methods defined in specific professional fields and academic disciplines.
Research evaluates: -
 Assess the accuracy of a hypothesis or interpretive framework.
 Collects relevant information and results for appropriate sharing.
 Helps create questions for more questions.
Research is defined as the creation of new knowledge and/or the use of existing knowledge in
new and creative ways to generate new concepts, methodologies and insights. This may
involve the synthesis and analysis of previous research to the extent that it leads to new and
creative results. This definition of research is consistent with the broad definition of research
and experimental development, which includes creative work undertaken to systematically
increase the knowledge base, including knowledge about humanity, culture and society and
its uses. This definition of research includes pure and strategic basic research, applied
research and experimental development. Applied research is original research that is
conducted to gain new knowledge, but is aimed at a specific practical purpose or goal
(including a customer-oriented goal). Research is the search for new information through a
process of discovery. Scientific research is the careful study and systematic observation of
phenomena. Most scientific research projects involve experiments, which often require
testing the effects of changing conditions on outcomes. The circumstances in which special
observations are made must be carefully monitored and records must be kept carefully. This
ensures that observations and results are repeatable.
Basic Research: The purpose of Basic Research is to gain a broader knowledge or
understanding of the subject being studied without special applications. In industry, basic
research refers to research that advances scientific knowledge but does not have specific
immediate commercial goals, although it may be in areas of current or potential commercial
interest.
Applied Research: Applied Research seeks to gain knowledge or understanding to determine
the means by which a specific identified need can be met. Industrially applied research
includes research aimed at discovering new scientific information that has certain commercial
objectives in terms of products, processes or services.
Evaluation research (summative and formative): Evaluation research examines solution-
oriented processes and outcomes. The purpose of formative research is to improve human
functioning in certain conditions such as activity, time and groups of people; the purpose of
summative evaluation is to evaluate the effectiveness of a program, policy, or product.
Action research: Action research aims to solve specific problems in a program, organisation
or community. Patton (1990) described that the planning and data collection of action
research is usually informal and the people in the situation are directly involved in the data
collection and learning.
Importance of Research in Academics
The most important objectives of research are the production of evidence to establish
hypotheses, direct activities and advance knowledge in a certain field of research. This essay
discusses the importance of research and the various reasons why it is important for everyone
- not just students and researchers. Although it may seem obvious, many people avoid
research like the plague despite its importance. Research is important to anyone who enjoys
learning, regardless of whether they are affiliated with a research organisation.
• A tool to develop knowledge and facilitate learning
Research is important to everyone, including researchers, professionals and ordinary people.
This is important for both experienced writers and aspiring writers, both offline and online.
Research provides non-professionals who value education, information about the world and
skills to help them survive and live a better life. On the other hand, choosing an interesting
topic to talk about and/or write about should go beyond the personal experience of
professionals and writers. Research can be justified by knowing what the general public
would be interested in learning or what experts want people to understand or pay attention to.
• Keeps you updated with the latest information
There are always new discoveries in various fields, especially those related to science.
Research prevents you from falling behind or getting inaccurate information about a topic.
You can use the latest knowledge based on ideas or speak confidently about the topic when
needed. This brings us to the next factor related to increasing credibility.
• Encourages Curiosity
A love of learning new things can last a lifetime if you have the resources to nurture it. Basic
research also opens up new opportunities and develops analytical skills. It is a reward for the
curiosity that burns inside every person. If you are committed to acquiring knowledge, it will
help you to continuously grow.
• Prepares for future leadership
If you are a business student, you can learn how to plan and strategise while in the field. You
can set your goals for the future. In fields such as medicine, research helps identify diseases
and symptoms and reveals new ways to eliminate them. So, you can prepare yourself for the
real world by knowing more about the challenges you have to face. These were some of the
reasons why research is so important in education. The student is expected to learn and read
more about various subjects from an early age. Those who sincerely allow themselves to do
this will find that they understand the concepts more easily. They develop a learned
perspective fuelled by research and in-depth study of topics.
Other factors in terms of importance would be research aids employment prospects, helps in
understanding issues, provides truthful evidence, exercises your mind, builds credibility,
teaches discernment, raises awareness and (practicality) prepares you to deal with future.
