BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Online games refers to games that are played over in some form of computer network, most
often the internet. Online games can range from simple text-based games to games
incorporating complex graphics and virtual words populated by many players simultaneously.

Internet games (also known as online games) are games that are played online via the
internet. They are distinct from video and computer games in that day are normally platform
independent, relying solely on client side technologies. Normally, all that is required to play
internet games are a web browse and the appropriate plug-in.

There are pros and cos in using mobile games. The researchers found that mobile games
gives sharpens mind and improved social interaction of the mind and also connecting with
people. Online games sharpens the child's mind and keeps it engaged. The games usually
include multiple stages or objectives that must be finished in a certain amount of time.

This aids the children in their learning of time management and also it help to improved
social interaction of the students as they communicate and play with complete strangers
online, children become more socially active. It also aids them in their social lives. It improves
the coordination of the mind and hands in one of the most significant advantages that children
gain from playing internet games.

He or she learns to link his or her thoughts to the motion of his or her hands. They gain mental
strenght while performing these acts. And the cons of mobile games are internet is a wide-open
space where you can find a wealth of knowledge. Children may download games from
untrustworthy websites. As a result, people download spam, viruses, and harmful software,
among others things.

As they communicate and play with complete strangers online, children become more socially
active. It also aids them in their social lives. Some people are continuously looking for new
methods to take advantage of children. Online, children can be deceived and defrauded, as well
as abused and bullied.

If you intend to enter or play the game you wish to play online, an update to the computer will
arrive unexpectedly at some points, delaying your game time. You all hunt for upgrades in your
gaming component because you need to upgrade your computer or laptop to play your favorite
game, which can waste a lot of money.

People can become violent as a result of playing video games. If they are regularly utilizing
violence to solve an issue in a video game, it may leak into their daily lives. The most worrying
misgiving about online gaming is the addiction that results from playing mobile games for too
long. This compulsive behavior sees other gamers go to the extent of mismanaging funds
availeble to them to feed their addiction.

Online games captures the psychology of young people and attract a large number of youngs
users. Therefore, many young people are addicted to games, waste time and waste theri
studies. It even has an impact on physical and mental health. Online games consume a lot of
money. Online games users cannot extricate themeselves from being addicted to it, and they
have invested a lot of energy and time. Like drug abuse, users want to get by all means and
even do illegal and criminal things that affect public order.

Without a doubt, one larging negative side of online gaming is that it strains eyes due to the
longer screen-time and in the long run can end up being an addiction. Interaction with family
members and friends also decrease which can negatively impact relationships. Since online
gaming does not require any physical activities, it can eventually lead to a sedentary lifestyle. 1

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLE

This study aims to determine the profile, especially, this study aims to answer the following.

1. How many respondent profile described in terms of;
a. Age
b. Grade level
c. Gender
d. Socio-economic status
2. How does mobile games affects the academic of the students?
3. What are the pros and cons of mobile games towards the students' academic?

OBJECTIVES

The research would like to:

1. Identify the population of the students in Barobaybay Mission School who are playing
mobile games.
2. Determine the age, grade level, gender and socio-economic status of the students who
are addicted on mobile games.
3. Determine the role of mobile games in their lives.
4. Identify what grade level has highest percentage of the students who are addicted
playing mobile games.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to determine the affects of Mobile games towards academic
performance in the learning process of the student.

STUDENTS. As the main subject of this study, they will have the knowledge on how to balance
their time spent on mobile games and academic performance. The findings of this study will
help them to figure out ways to improve their Academic performance while experiencing the
new normal way of learning.

TEACHERS. As teaching personne, the findings of this study will raise awareness that would lead
to developing new teaching strategies to enhance tha students interest towards learning and
develop teacher intervention towards the effects of mobile games to the academic
performance of the students.

PARENTS. Should be aware of the effects of online activities on the academic performance of
their children and that proper guidance and supervisions on their extracurricular activities must
be monitored.

COMMUNITY. Most online games gain friends within the games they play, even through they
have not seen those friends in person. There is a bonding happening and it can build a strong
relationship.

SCHOOL. The findings of this study will raise awareness to the school administrators on their
students mobile games addiction and help them develop school interventions that would solve
the issue and faster students that are got-centered and technological responsible and wise.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study will be conducted at Barobaybay Academy-Mission School and due to time
constraints. The study will be focusing on how mobile games affects the academic
performances of the students.
Selected students in Barobaybay Academy-Mission School are include in this research because
they will serve as a respondent for the survey. The research also uses the library in researching
or gathering information that is related to the problem.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Mobile Games- is a video that is typically played on a mobile phone.2

Academic Performance- is the extent to which as students, teacher or institution has attained
their short or long-term educational goals.3

Addiction- the fact or the condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or
activity.

Online Games- is simply the playing of a video game over the internet, usually with friends. 4

Offline Games- is a game play where the player doesn't connect to another computer or server
and is only playing with NPCs (non-playing characters).5

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This study has two variables: Subject, Consequences, and treatment as the independent
variable and the effect of Mobile Games towards Academic Performance of the students as
dependent variable.

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

Computer game addiction generally refers to an excessive, unhealthy amount of playing


computer games. Rather than engaging in the real world, an addicted user devotes the majority
of his or her time to gaming (Conrad, 2011). The issue of game addiction is getting spread
widely and uncontrollable. Gaming addiction became a mysterious problem which is still
different to treated, more terrifying than alcohol or drugs addiction. Whereas, in fact, Di
Shumaila Yousafzai (2009) from Cardiff Business School said popular online video games
warned players not to overuse their products.6

These warning messages also suggest that the online video game induatry might know how
high the percentage of over-users is, how much time gamers spend playing and what specific
features make a particular game more engrossing and ddictive that others (Yousafzai, 2009). In
other hand, Cyber psychologist Dr. Zaheer Hussain, from the University of Derby, said warning
messages were not enough. As a first step onkine game developers and publishers need to look
into the structural features of the game design, for example the character development, rapid
absorption rate, and multi-player features which could make then addictive and or problematic
for some gamers (Hussain, 2008).7

Parents across the globe are increasingly concerned about their sons online gaming habits. They
are sure that there is a problem but counselors unfamiliar with online gaming addiction don't
understand how seductive they can be (Young, 2009, p.4). 8

Fraser (2012) mentions that kids are among the most vulnerable to video game addiction,
experts said, and may become violent when their "drug" is taken away. Video game and
Internet addiction usually point to other mental problems including anxiety, depression and
trouble forming healthy relationships.9

Kimberli Young (2009, p.12) says, not only are children, teenagers, and college students
effected by online gaming addiction, but a growing number of adults are becoming hooked to
online gaming. While such cases are rare, mental-health professionals say the fantasy worlds
offered by computer and video games can become the staff of very real addictions that destroy
marriages and careers. People of all ages are quickly becoming immersed in this virtual fantasy
world whereby they can easily escape problems in their lives.10

As in any treatment program, the primary step to take in the path, according to Kimberly (2009,
p.18), to recovery is to accept and not refute "denial," a defense mechanism that addicts
frequently employ and that effectively stops them from accepting treatment. Once this obstacle
is conquered, treatment can be performed more effectively than it would otherwise. Tracy
Miller (2013) add because computer game addiction is a new development in the world of
mental health, treatments are not as well established as those for depression, anxiety, anger,
