I. MINI-LESSON/LECTURETTE

Academic Writing is a formal style of writing. This means it is different from

other types of writing and different from spoken English. There are ten features you
can apply to make your writing more formal.

Feature What you need to do

Use formal language rather than the common

1. Use formal vocabulary
everyday language

Use formal verbs and avoid two-word verbs. For

2. Use formal verbs example, use 'establish' instead of 'set-up' and
'decrease' instead of 'go-down.'

Use the full form of verbs and avoid using

3. Use full verbs
contractions. For example, use 'cannot' instead of
'can't' and 'will not' instead of 'won't.'

Use formal structures/more complicated sentences

such as clauses and noun phrases, not just short,
4. Use formal grammar simple sentences. For example, "it is important to
structures consider all shareholders in this matter; they have a
final vote." And "The internationalization of the
economy has created growth opportunities."

Make very clear and definite statements. Avoid using

5. Use statements rhetorical questions because they make the Writing
seem weak.

6. Use impersonal Use language such as 'there is' or 'it is likely that'
language rather than 'I think or I feel.'

Provide concise, clear, and accurate statements.

Avoid vague and ambiguous statements. Use data
wherever possible. For example, use "The Coalition
7. Be precise
was formed in 1923, some 24 years ago and have a
conservative ideology" rather than "The Coalition has
been destroying the country for about a century."

1
8. Use references and Support your statements with evidence, and ensure
evidence you reference these.

Use hedging statements or tentative language such

as 'may,' 'it's possible that,' 'appears to' to qualify
9. Use hedging statements. This avoids absolute statements, which
statements may be in error: "The Liberal government may be
responsible for increased habitat destruction and
environmental degradation."

Use transition words at the start of some sentences

to connect ideas explicitly and logically. 'In addition,'
10. Use transition words
'In contrast,' 'For this reason.' Do not use 'but,' 'and'
'so' at the start of the sentence.

Task 1. Fill in the Concept Wheel with your ideas about Academic Writing. Use the
information that you gained from the above reading.

While some students would like to choose their clothes, there are many
reasons why public schools should wear school uniforms. First, uniforms save
time in the morning. Selecting an outfit can take time, but putting on a uniform is
easy and fast. In addition, uniforms are also less expensive than regular clothing.
An outfit for a student can cost more than sixty dollars, and shoes or accessories
can add cost.
On the other hand, the uniforms sold at area stores cost thirty dollars or
less.
Furthermore, uniforms would reduce the competition in dress among
students. Lastly, some students might not be able to afford popular clothes, and
wearing uniforms would save them from being embarrassed. Given all of these
facts, it is clear that students enrolled in public school should be required to wear
a school uniform.
