Three Key Findings (50 words each)

Key Finding 1:

Nature itself is impermanent, it is constantly evolving, changing, growing and dying. Although there is constant change in our natu-
ral environment, there is a sense of balance and stability that comes with it, restoring the natural order through constant change. For
example, sand, the tiny building blocks of our world is never one form, it is constantly moving. From the pushes and pulls of the tide
washing it onto shore, changing the landscape of the beach, to it compacting into sandstone before being beaten by the waves and
turned back into singular grains of sand once again. There is also a sense of connection that comes with this impermanence, when
you are walking on the beach you are walking on sand that has come from every corner of the world.

Key Finding 2:

As humans we feel emotions so intensely that they can feel all consuming and leave room for nothing else. It can be hard to believe
that you won’t feel this emotion forever, like when experiencing the grief that comes with losing a loved one. However, it’s important
to acknowledge that everything is impermanent, even emotions and that with time they will fade. You will experience many emotions
throughout your life and won’t feel the same way forever.

Key Finding 3:

Throughout your life you will have people that will come and go, when they leave it can be sudden and unexpected but there is still
value in your time with them. Although they were impermanent, your memories, experiences and what you learnt from them in your
time together will always be with you.

Reflective Statement (300 words)

As an emerging designer I personally think that I have a very creative, productive, enthusiastic and imaginative approach to design,
allowing me to be fully involved in this first assessment task. I felt the most comfortable with design skills such as sketching as it al-
lows me to get my ideas down onto the page and is quite relaxing and soothing for my mind.

One of the most successful parts of Task 1 for me was creating a Chladni plate that did it’s intended purpose, successfully creating
patterns in the sand. The fact that it worked on the first try without having to make any adjustments to the structure and setup of my
design was an unanticipated success as I didn’t think it would work straight away. Another successful part of this assessment was the
use of texture and illustration for the casing of my design as it communicated a story relating to my concept with the use of patterns,
soundwaves, and sand for texture. This will allow my audience to better understand the connections between the Chladni plate and
my understanding of impermanence in nature. Showing the yin and yang effects in nature that counteract each other to provide us
with a sense of stability.

However, there were still challenges that I encountered during Task 1, particularly sourcing the right materials. In order to create the
Chladni plate I needed to find an amplifier as I did not already own which took a long time as they are expensive, so it was difficult to
find one for cheap. Finding a good quality subwoofer speaker that was powerful yet compact also proved to be an issue, however,
this was resolved once I found the right store to purchase one. The aluminium sheet also proved to be difficult as it needed to be cut
without being bent out of shape, which is tricky seeming that aluminium easily dents and warps out of shape. Even after successfully
cutting it the aluminium sheet wasn’t one hundred percent level, causing the sand to slowly migrate in one direction after a while.

Through the completion of Task 1 my concept development skills have improved greatly as this assessment forced me to look for
new perspectives and approaches to the design. Allowing me to criticise and refine ideas in order to further develop my understand-
ing of the concept. In saying this, my documentation skills do need further development as I am not used to updating my progress at
every step of the design process.

One thing that I wish I did was take my reflections more seriously so that it would be easier to look back on my progress and have
clear steps as to what I should do next that would have helped guide the rest of the project. In order to improve my work and skills
for Task 2, I will ensure I document every thought, development and change related to my design as well as be more time efficient
and organised. Interestingly, the feedback from working collaboratively in Task 1 made me feel more engaged and invested in my
design as the words of encouragement and constructive critiscism allowed me to further develop my design and have more confi-
dence in it.
