Module 3: Various dimensions of Philippine literary history from pre-colonial to contemporary

Objectives

At the end of this module, you are expected to attain the following learning outcomes:
1. Distinguish pre-history literary in the use of linguistic style.
2. Determine language used that identify literal/figurative meaning in the literary genre.
3. Appreciate the linguistic style in the understanding the content of piece.

Introduction

D ialect is a way of speaking that is associated with a specific geographical region or


group of people. Authors used dialect to give their writing the feel of a particular place.
It is also a vehicle of their literary mood.

In literature, there are different literary devices used by authors. It includes allusion,
diction, epigraph, euphemism, foreshadowing, imagery, metaphor/simile, personification, point-
of-view and structure.

Overview

I t is tempting to think that direct language is the easiest for us to understand, but sometimes
we respond better to more creative wording. Writers and poets use figurative language build
imagery and give words more power. Simile, metaphor and a host of non-literal methods of
expression help make concepts familiar and graspable.

Activity 1:
Directions: Read the poem written Estelito B. Jacob and answer the following questions. (Write
your answer briefly.)

1. Who is the speaker in the poem? Do you think the persona is a man or a woman, explain
your answer? The speaker of this poem is Estilelito B. Jacob and the person is a man
because this poem is for the woman.
2. What are the major poetic devices used in the poem? Are they effective and accurate way
to express the poet’s ideas about the subject matter? What or why not? The speaker used
local dialect that is so perfectly good in this poem.
3. Discuss the contrast or chance implied by the first and last stanza. How does it express
the poem’s theme? The speaker of this poem in the first stanza express the poem`s
theme is all about love.
4. What is the poem saying about love and relationship? Honestly I don’t know what
saying said about love and relationship but I have saying about love “If you love so
much you will hurt that much”.
