Introduction

H istorical texts use factual information and artifacts to account for the origin of nations
and how they got their names. Scientific texts likewise cite facts that indicate what led to
inventions and discoveries. Literary texts, on the other hand, use the imagination and to
no difference in historical and scientific explanations of beginnings, there are varied accounts of
creation that differ depending on the cultural group that produced them.

Overview

L egends, like other different types of folklore, were passed down orally from one
generation to another and saw print only in ethnographic studies of different cultural
groups. Legends highlight cause-effect relationships to show how and why things came to
be. Since legend accounts for the creation of something and the origin of its name, it contains the
elements of a narrative, namely the setting (time and place); characters (protagonist and
antagonist); and plot (conflict and resolution).
