Math Lec3 1903

The document discusses whether drawing balls from a bag with or without replacement constitutes Bernoulli trials. It also finds the probability of getting exactly 5 heads in 8 coin tosses and the probability of 5 customers arriving in 1 minute given an average arrival rate of 2 customers per minute using the Poisson distribution formula. It then calculates the probability that a specific page has no misprints given an average of 0.2 misprints per page.

Lecture 2 Maths

1. Eight balls are drawn from a bag containing 10 white and 10 black balls. Predict
whether the trials are Bernoulli trials if the ball drawn is
a. Replaced
b. Not replaced

2. If a fair coin is tossed 8 times, find the probability of:

a. Exactly 5 heads
b. At least 5 heads
(a) For the first case, when a ball is drawn with replacement, the probability of success
(say, white ball) is p=10/20=1/2, which is the same for all eight trials (draws). Hence, the
trial involving the drawing of balls with replacements are said to be Bernoulli trials.
(b)For the second case, when a ball is drawn without replacement, the probability of
success (say, white ball) varies with the number of trials. For example, for the first trial, the
probability of success, p=10/20. For the second trial, the probability of success is p=9/19,
which is not equal to the first trial. Hence, the trials involving the drawing of balls without
replacements are not Bernoulli’s trials.

8. In a cafe, the customer arrives at a mean rate of 2 per min. Find the probability of arrival of
5 customers in 1 minute using the Poisson distribution formula.

Given: λ = 2, and x = 5.

Using the Poisson distribution formula:

The probability of arrival of 5 customers per minute is 3.6%.

9. There are 50 misprints in a book which has 250 pages. Find the probability that page 100 has no
misprints.

The average number of misprints on a page is 50/250 = 0.2 . Therefore, if we let X be the random variable
denoting the number of misprints on a page, X will follow a Poisson distribution with parameter 0.2 .

Since the average number of misprints on a page is 0.2, the parameter, l of the distribution is equal to 0.2
