Freuds Uncanny

I like the idea which Freud refers to Jetschs Theory of the uncanny which is based around how the uncanny is produced from a sense of History He must first put himself in the proper state of feeling and so put himself in the way of experiencing a sense of the uncanny which would refer to childhood and the things you deal with as a child carried on throughout your life to produce your own vision of the uncanny and how it is personal to everyone. Which in often cases refers to Clowns and the Clich Horror sequences that are seen today

Also Freud explains about the different languages within the uncanny and the different meanings to which it is portrayed such as Greek Foreign, alien Arabic and Hebrew Uncanny merges with the Demonic' and the Gruesome. English: Uncomfortable, uneasy. Gloomy, dismal, uncanny, ghastly. Haunted.

This is what I hope to achieve within my work with basic relevance to these theories definitions.

Artist Research

Artists I have researched and who have influenced me mainly up to yet, have been the workings of David Lynch, looking at some of his photography, and also his films and Tv-series Twin Peaks also I have looking heavily into Melanie Pullens Crime Scene Images based on real crime scenes and used in the style for fashion with the feeling of Lighting and Color influence me mainly, with warm dangerous colors to draw the audiences eye, Also Recently I have discovered Miu Miu who is a fashion designer however she has Photographs and a influence from the red room within twin peaks using strong color and Mirror imagery, with women which resemble Dolls for there stare of fashion.

Visual Concept Idea

The ideas which I have chosen to do are based around : 1. An alleyway. 2. Bedroom. 3. living room. 4. Roadside.
I started within nightmare scenarios from personal experience and a reoccurring Nightmare as a child within an alleyway and working forward from it, as I didnt want to be too surreal with my image but still capture the nightmarish identity of being in the situation I plan to merge the ideas together in some form, I started working on thumbnails such as a painted bedroom with the painting of a full Roadside scene, as shown in Thumbnails 23 and 34 however I feel it is unclear to the audience the effect I am trying to achieve. I have took reference from the workings of Melanie Pullen mainly I really want to focus on the color palette of Brighter Sepia tones, such as the yellow orange images seen below, and strong lighting focusing on an irrelevant part to draw the eye around the scene. I am yet to work out which objects I will create in Maya however, I think with more progression within my thumbnails i will understand this further.

Essay Introduction

Essay Unit 3: Environment Jamie Tibbott 1105 170 Introduction

Within this essay I will be looking into the uncanny in relation to specific games, films and images, And will explore what makes them uncanny with reference to Sigmund Freuds, The Uncanny(Sigmund Freud, 1919). Fallout 3 Game.(Bethesda, 2008) which is a post apocalyptic game based in the future with relevance to American culture however is very dark and but somehow realistic in a sense of a nuclear explosion. In comparison will be Picnic at Hanging Rock(Peter Weir, 1975) which is a complete opposite meaning within the uncanny as a storyline of no such genre and a mind twisting imaginative take on the film industry. Melanie Pullens high Fashion Crime Scenes(Melanie Pullen, 2005) to which I will be focusing on her Metro series images, and the reality yet otherworldly photographs that get the audiences mind wondering on the possibilities. Finally the exploration into Twin Peaks episode beyond life and death( David Lynch, 1991) which will look into a dream sequence which ventures into new worlds and ambiguous scenes which explore the unknown and create a whole new experience to the audience.

Review of Melanie Pullens work http://uponamidnightdreary.com/decorations/melanie-pullens-high-fashion-crime-scenes/9700

I hope to incorporate the review throughout the presentation and talking about the connection between what makes these films/games/images uncanny and the links between the aspects of Freuds theory.

Anita said... Hey Jamie. I'm currently looking at Melanie Pullen's work too! Her work really stood out to me. You've got some interesting images here. I'm looking forward to seeing where you take this project :) 07 December 2011 05:20 I really like the angle of the image in the top left corner. To a certain extent, it makes the viewer feel like the victim, rather than onlooking from afar 07 December 2011 05:25 nice set of thumbnails :) there's something about 11 and 17 that caught my eye. is there any here that you think you are going to develop? 11 December 2011 16:49

Jamie Tibbott said... 17, 23 and 30 are my favorites atm ive tryed playing about with 30 a bit more as you imght be able to tell in the later series but i plan on working alot more with them and making the atmosphere different within them, focusing more on the eary-nature of the scene rather than the emptiness 9 December 2011 13:17 hey Anita :D I do like the top two images in influence map 1 as you said the stories can be interpreted however you please, also the lighting in influence 2's bottom two images has a real effect of the uncanny although bottom left is black and white i feel with added colour the suspense and drama behind the scene would be increased. look forward to see what you produce :D Ohhhh i see you got this one in the bag! only difference i can see in the brick is the blue smudge other than that.. Bang on! and tiles just a darker patched line but nothing else.. jealous! well done :D 8 December 2011 13:19 Nick! get some more stuff up on your blog!!! i want to see some ideas :(... please? :D 8 December 2011 13:22
