Topic : DC Machine Part-2 DPP - 06
Date : 04/05/2022 Daily Practice Problem for Mind Map
Question 1
A 110 kW belt-driven shunt generator running at 400 r.p.m. on 220 V busbar continues to run as a motor
when the belt breaks. As a motor it takes 11 kW. Find the speed at which it will run as a motor if the
resistance of the armature and field are 0.025  and 55  respectively. Brush contact drop is 2 V.
Question 2
A 250 V d.c. shunt motor having an armature resistance of 0.25  carries an armature current of 50 A
and runs at 750 r.p.m. If the flux is reduced by 10%, find the speed. Assume that the load torque remains
the same.
Question 3
A 120 V d.c. shunt motor having an armature circuit resistance of 0.2  and field circuit resistance of
60  , draws a line current of 40 A at full load. The brush voltage drop is 3 V and rated full-load speed is
1800 r.p.m. Calculate: (a) the speed at half load; (b) the speed at 125 per cent full load.
Question 4
A shunt wound motor has an armature resistance of 0.1  . It is connected across 220 V supply. The
armature current taken by the motor is 20 A and the motor runs at 800 r.p.m. Calculate the additional
resistance to be inserted in series with the armature to reduce the speed to 520 r.p.m. Assume that there is
no change in armature current.
Question 5
A 240 V dc series motor takes 40 A when-giving its rated output at 1500 r.p.m. Its resistance is 0.3  ,
Calculate the value of resistance that must be added to obtain the rated torque (a) at starting, (b) at 1000
r.p.m
Question 6
A 200 V d.c. series motor runs at 1000 r.p.m. and takes 20 A. Combined resistance of armature and field
is 0.4  . Calculate the resistance to be inserted in series so as to reduce the speed to 800 r.p.m., assuming
torque to vary as square of the speed and linear magnetization curve.
Question 7
A series motor, with an unsaturated magnetic circuit and 0.5  total resistance, when running at a certain
speed takes 60 A at 500 V. If the load torque varies as the cube of the speed, calculate the resistance
required to reduce the speed by 25%.

Question 8
A 500 V shunt motor takes 4 A on no load. The armature resistance including that of brushes is 0.2 
and the field current is 1 A. Estimate the output and the efficiency when the input current is (a) 20 A, (b)
100 A.
Question 9
A belt-driven DC shunt generator running at 300 rpm delivers 100 kW to a 200 V DC grid. It continues
to run as a motor when the belt breaks, taking 10 kW from the DC grid. The armature resistance is
0.025 , field resistance is 50  and brush drop is 2 V. Ignoring armature reaction, the speed of the
motor is ______ rpm. (Round off to 2 decimal places.)
Question 10
A 250 V dc shunt motor has as armature resistance of 0.2  and a field resistance of 100  . When the
motor is operated on no-load at rated voltage, it draws an armature current of 5A and runs at 1200 rpm.
When a load is coupled to the motor, it draws total line current of 50 A at rated voltage, with a 5%
reduction in the air-gap flux due to armature reaction. Voltage drop across the brushes can be taken as 1
V per brush under all operating conditions. The speed of the motor, in rpm, under this loaded condition,
is closest to:
(A) 1220 (B) 1000
(C) 1200 (D) 900
