Instructor: David B. Ridge

Class 26 – Reading Questions

Name: Daniel Ketchum________________________________

These Reading Questions & Learning Activities will help you review principles and practices
covered in previous classes and prepare for the upcoming class by engaging in guided learning
activities and focusing on the most important aspects of the readings for the course.

Complete the questions and learning activities as you read the assigned texts. Pace yourself.
Unless otherwise specified, you don’t need to write in complete sentences or essay form; short
answers are OK, even bullet lists in some cases–whatever you think answers the question and
will help you remember the material and use it as a study guide for exams. To get credit for this
assignment, submit your answers on Learning Suite (in a word document or PDF) before the
beginning of class.

Class 26 – Jesus Christ’s Atonement, Death, and Resurrection Part II

Purpose: These readings will help you understand the accounts of Jesus’s atonement, death, and
resurrection in their ancient context. They will also help us apply these accounts to us, here, now,
as we seek to learn about who Jesus Christ is and how we may receive the blessings of his atonement.

Mark 15; Matthew 27; Luke 23; John 18:28–40; John 19

• Who carries Jesus’s cross in each gospel? (Hint: John has a different account than the
synoptics; and it’s exactly what you would expect from John!)
Simon or Jesus.
• Across all four gospels, there are seven recorded statements that Jesus makes on the
cross. List all seven, including what Jesus says and the scripture reference in which the
statement appears.

Father, bforgive them; for they know not what cthey do.
bWoman, behold thy son!
Behold thy amother!
Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, aMy God, my God, why hast thou bforsaken me?
Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in aparadise.
I thirst.
Father, into thy hands I acommend my bspirit
Mark 16; Matthew 28; Luke 24; John 20–21
• These chapters record the first appearances of the resurrected Lord to his disciples. Who
is the first person (or persons, depending on the gospel) that Jesus appears to in each
gospel?
Mary Magdalene, the two on the road, and Mary, perhaps the mother of James.
• In many of Jesus’s appearances in these gospels, the gospel authors make note of how
the witnesses of the resurrected Lord came to know of the reality of his resurrection.
There are several, what are at least three ways that people recognize the resurrected
Lord?
See Him, the way He spoke, and their feelings.
Acts 1:1–11
The beginning of the Book of Acts continues straight from the end of the gospel of Luke (see
address to Theophilus in Acts 1:1 and Luke 1:1–4).
• How long was Jesus’s ministry among the disciples that is recorded in this passage?
40 days
• In Acts 1:6, the disciples ask Jesus a question. How does he respond? What does his
response suggest about what the disciples’ priorities should be?
Don't worry about it. They should focus on teaching in Palestine.

• In the paragraph beginning with “…” Sister Aburto describes how the disciples and
friends of Jesus must have felt after witnessing his death. Her biblically-informed
description emphasizes what aspect of the disciples lack of knowledge regarding Jesus
and his mission?
• Summarize one or two of the key teachings about how the resurrection of Jesus Christ
applies to us that Sister Aburto teaches in this talk.
