“ What is Noun with Modifiers ?
▪ “Noun modifiers can modify slightly far away nouns”, we
say that the noun modifiers if preceded by a noun phrase
can modify the head of the noun phrase. Through this
article we will understand what these noun phrases and
noun modifiers are so that we can quickly identify them
▪ and ascertain their roles in modification.

▪ So let’s first begin with noun phrases. Now even before

we start with noun phrase, let us quickly take a look at
the definition of noun.

Noun Phrase

Noun Phrase is a phrase with a noun
or pronoun as its head. In addition to
the head, a noun phrase may contain
one or more determiners, pre-
modifiers, and post-modifiers. In other
words, a noun phrase is a phrase
which includes a noun (also called a
head) and optionally modifiers. A noun
phrase includes a noun (a person,
place, or thing).
 The example :
1. The book on the chair had been lost two days ago.
NP

From the sentence above, prepositional phrase “on the
chair” is a noun phrase modifier.
2. The book opened on the chair is mine.
NP
From he sentence, verb “opened on the chair” is noun
phrase modifier.

Noun modifiers adalah noun (kata benda) yang memodifikasi kata benda lain. Kata benda
sebagai modifier di sini berperan seperti kata sifat, yakni untuk mendeskripsikan kata benda
yang dimodifikasinya. Noun modifier diletakkan sebelum kata benda yang ingin dimodifikasi.
Mari kita lihat contoh di bawah ini untuk lebih memahaminya:
▪ A family car. (Mobil keluarga) –> family adalah noun modifier dan car adalah kata benda
yang dimodifikasi oleh family
▪ I went to an art school. (Aku sekolah di sekolah seni) –> art adalah noun modifier, dan
school adalah kata benda yang dimodifikasi oleh art
▪ I’d like one strawberry ice cream, please. (Saya ingin es krim stroberi) –> strawberry adalah
noun modifier, dan ice cream adalah kata benda yang dimodifikasi oleh strawberry
▪ He has joined the sport club since last year. (Dia sudah bergabung dengan klub olahraga
itu sejak tahun lalu) –> sport adalah noun modifier, dan club adalah kata benda yang
dimodofikasi oleh sport

Jangan pernah menggunakan apostrof s (‘s) atau bentuk posesif untuk
menuliskan noun modifier. Contoh:
▪ A diamond’s ring. –> salah, seharusnya a diamond ring (cincin berlian)
▪ An earrings’ box. –> salah, seharusnya an earrings box (kotak anting)
▪ New York’s resident. –> salah, seharusnya New York Resident
(penduduk New York)
Noun modifier ini memiliki banyak fungsi, di antaranya adalah untuk
menerangkan material atau bahan dari suatu kata benda, untuk
menyebutkan ukuran, usia, atau harga suatu kata benda, dan untuk
menjelaskan secara lebih detail suatu pelaku. Berikut adalah penjelasan
lebih lengkapnya:

1. Pre-modifiers
Modifiers can come before the noun. They include articles, possesive nouns, possessive
pronouns, adjectives, and participles.
a. Articles or Determiner
- I bought a car yesterday.
- The car is red.
b. Possessive Nouns
- The neighbor’s car is new.
- The man’s car was my car two years ago.
c. Possessive Pronouns Adjectives
- My car is parked near the store.
- His car is parked in front of the park.
c. Adjectives
- The pretty cat won a competition.
- The small cat is very expensive.
e. Participles
- The painted car costs 80 million dollars.
- The running car is Andi’s car.

2. Post-modifiers
Modifiers can come after the noun. They include prepositionl phrase, adjective
clauses, participle phrase, and infinitives.
a. Prepositional Phrase
- The bag under the table is mine.
- A bag on the chair is Sania’s
b. Adjectives Clauses
- The bike that has white flag was stolen last week
- The bike which the chain was loose was lost this morning.
c. Participle Phrase
- The movie running now was released three last week.
- The song played by the children was composed by Mr. Lukman

Noun Phrase Modifiers : Prepositional Phrase and
Adjective Clause
- Noun Phrase : My bathroom door is broken
- Adjective phrase : The beautiful girl bought a
pink bag
- Verb phrase : The girl singing loudly is my
classmate
- Prepositional phrase : The man in red coat is
my uncle
- Adjective clauses : I met the boy who cried in
the park

 Modifiers are words, phrases, or clauses that provide description
in sentence. Modifiers allow writers to take the picture that they
have in their heads and transfer it accurately to the heads of their
readerrs,
a. Prepositional Phrase (Determiner + Head + Prepositional Phrase)
A prepositional Phrase is the preposition and the object of the
prepositional together. Prepositions include direction, place time,
cause, manner, and amount. The following are examples of noun
phrases with modifiers in the form of prepositional phrase.
1. The bag under the chair is mine
2. The plant on the window gets a lot of sunlight.
3. The old house between the shops belongs to Mr. Hasan
4. The meetings at three o’clock was cancelled.

b. Adjective Clause (Determiner + Head + Adjective Clause)
An adjective clause is also called a relative clause. A clause is a group of words
that has a subject and predicate . There two kind of adjective clause : finite and
non-finite. Adjective clause can perform as noun phrase modifiers.
1. Finite Adjective Clause
A finite clause may stand alone. Finite clause usually use subordinating
conjunctions, such as who, when, what, how, that, since, etc.
e.g. The boy who is crying is Arya’s brother.
2. Non-finite Clause
Non-finite cannot stand on its own. There are three major types of non-finite
post-modifying clause.
a. Ing-clause
b. Ed-clause
c. To-clause
