Project Overview:
Students will explore different literary genres by reading a selection of books and creating
their own pieces of writing inspired by these genres. This project aims to enhance their
reading comprehension, analytical skills, and creative writing abilities.
Objectives:
To read and analyse different literary genres.
To improve comprehension and critical thinking skills.
To develop creative writing skills in various genres.
To practice organising and presenting their work.
Materials Needed:
A notebook or digital document for journal entries.
Access to a selection of books (library, e-books, etc.).
Pens, pencils, and markers for planning and drafting.
A computer for final drafts and presentations.
Instructions:
1. Book Selection:
Choose three books to read over the summer, each from a different genre
(e.g., mystery, science fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, etc.).
Make sure the books are of interest to you.
2. Reading Journal:
Keep a reading journal for each book. For each book, include:
Title and Author: Basic information about the book.
Summary: A brief summary of the plot (a 70 words paragraphs).
Character Analysis: Describe the main characters and their
development throughout the story.
Theme: Identify and discuss the main themes of the book.
Personal Reflection: Write about what they liked or didn’t like about
the book, and why.
3. Genre Analysis:
Write a short analysis (250 words) for each book focusing on the
characteristics of its genre. Discuss elements like setting, plot structure,
typical themes, and writing style that make it fit into its genre.
4. Creative Writing:
Genre-Inspired Stories: Write a short story for each of the three genres read.
Each story should be 100 words long and include:
Plot: A clear beginning, middle, and end.
Characters: Well-developed characters that fit the genre.
Setting: A detailed setting that enhances the story.
Genre Elements: Incorporate specific elements characteristic of the
genre.
5. Peer Review:
Share drafts of their creative writing with a classmate or family member for
feedback. Revise their stories based on the feedback received.
