Cummins ED-4 Display

Software and VPF (Vessel Personality File) Loading Instructions

The ED-4 Software consists of a zip file that must be unpackaged and loaded onto a
blank USB stick.
ED-4 Software File Structure Example

In summary, the software files must be unzipped prior to saving to the root directory of
the USB stick. The WINZIP tool may not function correctly and may result in partial
unzipping. The standard Windows Explorer extraction tool or WINRAR (available on
Cummins Software Shelf) are recommended for unzipping ED-4 software files.

Procedure for unzipping the software package using the Windows

Extractor:
1. Browse to location where the ED-4 zipped software is copied.
2. Right Click on the zipped package.
3. Select option “Open with -> Windows Explorer”. This step will launch another
window with the contents of zipped package displayed.
4. Under the “Extract” option on the “Menu” bar, select option “Extract”.
5. Select option “Extract All” and provide a path where the unzipped software is to
be saved.
6. Click on “Extract” button.
7. As soon as the extraction process is completed, the unzipped software is
available on the path selected in Step 5.
8. This unzipped software can then be loaded onto the USB drive for the software
update procedure.

Procedure for updating software and VPF:

1. Insert USB memory stick into the rear port of the ED-4.
2. Power on the system.
3. The menu for USB options will automatically load on the ED-4 as follows (Figure 27):
"Load VPF", "Extract Logs", "Extract VPF" and "Perform Software Update".
4. Select the "Perform Software Update" and follow the instructions on the screen.
5. Once the software is upgraded to the latest version, a message will appear
requesting the operator to remove the USB Stick. Remove the USB stick.
6. Re-insert the USB stick (powered on or restarted) and select the "Load VPF" option
(Figure 28).
7. Load the specific VPF onto the corresponding ED-4.

8. Once the installation is complete, the “new” software and VPF names can be verified
through the “About” screens.

Here are the three 5.20 VPF’s you need to install for a typical twin engine boat with
Premier CIB’s helm stations:
• Starboard CIB ED-4
046_DCSOxxS1_CMI Dual Engine, CIB ED-4, Stbd Outboard, Vessel
Sensor Set 1
• Port CIB ED-4
056_DCPOxxS2_CMI Dual Engine, CIB ED-4, Port Outboard, Vessel
Sensor Set 2
• All Helm ED-4’s
0165_DHSOPOCJ_CMI Dual Engine, Helm ED-4, Port or Starboard (disable

Once a VPF has been loaded onto a new boat, some screens that are not applicable
(port vs starboard engine, etc.) must be hidden or “toggled” off in the menu.

During the software update process, if the screen turns RED at any point after the BLUE
screen has been shown this indicates that there were problems reading the information
on the USB Stick. If this happens, the software update has not been applied and must
be attempted again.

ED-4 VPF Update Screen Flow Example (From USB Stick)

The software update process requires several minutes to complete. The VPF update
process also requires several minutes to complete. DO NOT remove the USB stick
during the software or VPF update process (unless it is frozen for more than 5 minutes).
Only remove the USB stick by first selecting the Eject key after all
downloading/uploading is complete.

NOTES:

USB Memory Stick (Storage Drive) Specifications

• USB stick body size max dimensions: 16.5mm x 12.7mm (0.65” x 0.5”)
• USB Storage capacity is 500MB minimum and 64GB maximum
• FAT32 format is preferred
• USB 2.0 and 3.0 formats are supported

Notes: Not all USB memory sticks physically fit into the ED-4 housing. The actual USB port is
the standard size, but the opening in the back of the ED-4 may physically restrict the use of
some USB drives.

It is strongly advised that the Cummins AE or Technician verify in advance the compatibility of
their USB stick/ ED-4 prior to visiting an OEM. The service group released a common USB
extension cable P/N 5394862 to adapt to USB drives that do not physically fit in the ED4
housing.

Some USB Sticks are not electronically compatible with the ED-4. If the update does
not install properly, please try a USB stick from a different manufacturer.

With the exception of software or VPF loading events, the USB port must be sealed with
weather cap at all times to provide protection from the environment.
After a USB memory stick has been inserted into an ED-4, an error message may appear every
time thereafter the USB stick is connected to a Windows-based computer. This is because the
ED-4 uses a Linux kernel. Any time another operating system other than Windows encounters
a USB stick, Windows will report an error the next time it is connected. This is only a nuisance
message and does not affect the functionality of the USB stick. Click “Cancel” to ignore this
message.

Expected Wait Times

Software loaded onto new ED-4: 5 minutes or less

Software Upgrade to existing ED-4: 2 minutes or less

VPF update: 5 minutes or less.

If these time intervals are exceeded without a confirmation prompt, please power-off the
system, remove the USB drive, and re-power the system. It is possible the software or
VPF was loaded successfully without prompting the user.

Note: If a “blank” grey screen appears anytime during a software update, a recovery
process must be initiated. Please follow the steps below for the recovery process:
 Recovery Process for ED-4:

1. Turn OFF "Enable" switch

2. Load ED-4 Software package on the USB Drive
3. Hold "Key 1" & "Key 5"
4. Turn ON "Enable" switch
5. ED-4 will start loading the software to recover from the intermediate
non-functional state.
