8 PROTEIN RICH FOOD GROUPS
All individuals want to live a healthy life. Nowadays getting fitness has become essential in spite of the
age. Even senior citizen aged between 60 to 94 years try to maintain fitness level as best they can. To
measure fitness level of older people senior citizen fitness test was developed by Dr. Roberta Rikli,
California State University, Fullerton and Dr. Jessie Jones.
CHAIR STAND TEST FOR LOWER BODY STRENGTH
Purpose: This test is designed to measure leg strength and endurance.
Equipment Required: The following equipment is needed:
1. Folding chair with straight back without arms rests. The height of the chair should be 44 cms.
2. Stop watch
Procedure: The subject is advised to sit on the chair and the arms are crossed around the wrists and the
hands are kept close to chest. After this the subject stands completely and then reaches again same
sitting position. This activity is repeated for 30 seconds.
Scoring: The score is determined by counting the number of repetitions in 30 seconds. By this number
the strength of leg and endurance is judged from the table given ahead.
9 VISHVAS MOCK TEST–1 (SOLVED)
36. Define Strength along with its types. Explain the methods to develop strength. (1+2+2=5)
Ans. MEANING OF STRENGTH
In simple words, strength is the ability of a muscle or a group of muscles to act or overcome resistance.
According to Barrow and McGee, “Strength is the capacity of the whole body or any of its parts to exert
force”.
Different sports and games require different types of strength which is classified as under.
1. Static Strength: It is the ability of muscles to act against resistance.
2. Dynamic Strength: It is related to the movements. Movements are clearly visible when someone
using dynamic strength.
TYPES OF DYNAMIC STRENGTH
Dynamic strength has further three types:
(i) Maximum Strength: Maximum strength is the ability of muscles to overcome against maximum
resistance. e.g. weightlifting, throwing events etc.
(ii) Explosive Strength: Explosive strength is the ability of muscles to overcome resistance as fast as
possible. e.g. jumps in basketball, sports etc.
(iii) Strength Endurance: It is the ability of the muscles to overcome resistance under conditions of
fatigue. e.g. swimming, road cycling etc.
METHODS OF IMPROVING STRENGTH - ISOMETRIC, ISOTONIC AND ISOKINETIC
Strength can be developed by many methods. Some of the important methods are explained below:
ISOMETRIC EXERCISES: In 1953 Hettinger and Muller of Germany introduced isometric exercises.
Isometric is derived from two words iso and metric.
Iso – SAME
Metric – Refers to muscle length
So isometric exercises are those exercises in which the length of the muscle remains the same during
isometric workout. Isometric exercises are common in games where static phases are common.
e.g., archery, gymnastics, yoga, judo, wrestling, weightlifting, etc.
ISOTONIC EXERCISES: In 1945, De Lorme introduced isotonic exercises. Later in 1948, De Lorme and
Watkins explained isotonic exercises in detail.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS-XII 10
The word isotonic is derived from two words, i.e., iso and tonic.
Iso – Same
Tonic – Muscle Tone
During isotonic contraction, the muscle changes in length and external movement is visible. Isotonic
training methods help in training weightlifters and is also used in rehabilitation of weak muscles.
Isotonic exercises are performed with free weight as they are used in weight training.
ISOKINETIC EXERCISES
Isokinetic exercises were introduced by J.J. Perrine in 1968.
This is derived from two words i.e., iso and kinetic.
Iso – SAME
Kinetic – MOTION
Isokinetic exercises are performed on an equipment. This equipment also has read-out devices for
recording of speed and muscle tension.
Arm stroke in swimming and pedalling in cycling are the best examples of isokinetic exercises.
37. Define Friction along with its types. Explain the methods of reducing friction. (1+2+2=5)
Ans. FRICTION
The force acting along two surfaces in contact which opposes the motion of one body over the other is
called the force of friction.
TYPES OF FRICTION
There are different types of friction:
1. Static friction: It occurs when the force
applied to an object does not cause the thing
to move. eg., if we try to push a heavy object
with less force than the force of static friction between the object and the floor, the object will not
move.
2. Kinetic friction: When force is applied to an object and the object moves it is kinetic friction.
Three types :
(a) Sliding friction: When two bodies are in contact and one body moves on the surface of the other
body by sliding on it or rubbing over the surface. i.e. skating on ice, planting a pole in the pole
vault event and skiing.
(b) Rolling friction: It occurs between wheels and a surface. When two bodies are in contact and
one body rolls over the other, it is called as rolling friction. e.g., when a cricket ball is hit it begins
to move ahead and roll on the ground. After sometime it stops rolling due to the friction force, this
type of friction is often seen in sports. e.g., Roller skates.
(c) Fluid friction: When the movement of an object or a person is hindered or meets resistance from
water or air, it is fluid friction e.g., swimming, diving, paragliding.
METHODS OF REDUCING FRICTION
Following methods are helpful in reducing friction:
1. Polishing: By polishing the surface in contact becomes smooth and the force of friction reduces.
Many implements like discus are painted to reduce the friction.
2. Lubrication: The lubrication of surfaces makes them slippery and this reduces the force of friction.
3. Type of Material: The force of friction largely depends on the type of material. The friction between
rubber and concrete is less than if we compare iron and concrete. That is why the tyres are made from
rubber.
4. Streamlining: Friction due to air is reduced by streamlining the shape of the body. The aeroplanes
are made with sharp front to reduce friction.
5. Use of Ball Bearings: The ball bearings are used to reduce the force of friction.
