-:BONKU BABU’S FRIEND:-

1. Who was bonku babu? Where did he work and for how long?

Ans. Bonku Babu was a teacher in the Kankurgachhi village primary school. He taught geography and Bengali
for the last twenty two years and no one had ever seen him getting cross. He was fifty years old and he was a
very good story teller who used to tell stories to the good children about life in Africa, discovery of the North
Pole, the fish in Brazil that ate the human flesh and the continent Atlantis which submerged under the sea.

Bonku Babu worked in the Kankurgachhi Village primary school as a Geography and Bengali teacher for
twenty two years.

2. How did the students make fun of Bonku Babu?

Ans. The students drew Bonku Babu’s cartoon on the blackboard, some put glue on his chair or on the night of
Kali Puja they lit a chasing rocket and set it off right behind him.

3. Why did not he protest and maintain his calm?

Ans. Bonku Babu did not protest because he could not afford to do otherwise. If he did lose his temper and left
his job in a fit of pique, he knew how difficult it would be to find another job at this age. Another reason was
that, in every class there were always a few good students even if the rest of the class was full of pranksters.
Teaching this handful of students was so rewarding for him that alone made life as a teacher worth living.

4. Whom did he invite to his house? What did he offer them and what stories did he tell?

Ans. Bonku Babu invited those good students who made his life as a teacher worth living.

Bonku Babu offered those snacks and told those tales of foreign lands and exciting adventures. He told
them about the life in Africa, discovery of the North Pole, the fish in Brazil that ate the human flesh and the
continent Atlantis which submerged under the sea.

5. Where did Bonku Babu go during the weekend? Why could not he stop himself from going in spite of being
insulted again and again?

Ans. During the weekend, Bonku Babu went to the lawyer, Sripati Majumdar’s House to spend the evenings
with other regulars.

Bonku Babu could not stop himself from going there in spite of getting insulted again and again because
what would Sripati Babu think who was a very important man in the school committee and in the village and
Sripati Babu also cannot do without Bonku Babu, who could provide amusement to all.

6. How was he attacked by a spook one night? What impact did it have on him?

Ans. One day, Bonku Babu unknowingly opened his mouth and declared that he was not afraid of ghosts. As
he was passing under a tamarind tree, a tall thin figure leapt down and landed on his back, as it happened,
this partition had smeared black ink all over itself.

Bonku Babu was not frightened but on the consequence, he was injured on his neck ached for three days,
moreover his new Kurta was torn and it had black stains all over it.
7. Whom had they seen a similar light before and what did it turned out in the end?

Ans. Three months ago they had seen a similar light which had led to much speculation. In the end, it had
turned to be a Russian satellite called for Khotka or Phoska and it was supposed to move around the earth at a
height of four hundred miles giving valuable information to the scientists.

8. Who was the first person to spot the strange light? Who took the credit of it and why?

Ans. Bonku Babu was the first person to spot the strange light.

Bonku Babu showed it to Nidhu Babu and when he arrived at the meeting he found that Nidhu Babu
had fully claimed the credit for being the first person to see the strange light and boasting a great deal about it.

9. What was Chandi Babu’s opinion about it? Who countered it and how?

Ans. According to Chandi Babu, the press gets all excited when somebody sees a point of light in some
obscure corner and referred them as all humbug.

Ramkanai countered this remark by saying that they are not humbugs yet it was a human achievement.

10. What was Nidhu Babu’s opinion about satellites?

Ans. According to Nidhu Babu, a satellite is just a machine going around the earth like a spinning top or a fan
would start to rotate if one pressed the switch.

11. Where did Bhairav Chakraborty think a creature from another planet would come?

Ans. Bhairav Chakraborty thought a creature from another planet would come on earth would land on
Moscow, London, New York, Calcutta but not in Kankurgachhi village.

12. What is Sripati Babu’s opinion about a creature from another planet?

Ans. Sripati Babu said that he could assure that the aliens would not come to this God forsaken place. They are
not fools and it is his belief that they were Sahibs and they would land on some western country where all the
Sahibs live.

13. Why did not Bonku Babu think it impossible?

Ans. Bonku Babu thought if an Alien had to visit the earth would it really matter where it arrived first, it
might not aim to go straight to any other part of the world, it was highly unlikely that such a thing would
happen on Kankurgachhi village.

14. How did Chandi Babu take things a bit further?

Ans. Chandi Babu nudged Nidhu Babu silently pointed at Bonku Babu and spoke innocently, in my opinion
Bonku Babu is quite right is not it natural that aliens should come to a place where there is a man like Bonku
Bihari and if they wanted to take away a human specimen can they find better than him.

15. Whom did Bonku Babu wonder to be a suitable specimen for a museum or a zoo?
Ans. Bonku Babu wondered silently if anyone where to look for a specimen where not the others just suitable.
Sripati Babu’s chin was so much like a camel’s and that Bhairav Chakraborty his eyes were like the eyes of a
tortoise, Nidhu Babu look like a rat, Ramkanai like a goat and Chandi Babu like a flitter mouse.

16. How did Bonku Babu feel after the meeting?

Ans. Bonku Babu’s tears sprang from his eyes. He had came to the meeting hoping for once to enjoy himself
and that was clearly not to be then he was so emotional that he could not stay any longer and got to his feet.

Ans. Ramkanai warned Bonku Babu to take care as it was a moonless night and Saturday, it was very
auspicious for ghosts and spooks.

18. What unusual thing did Bonku Babu find that night?

Ans. Bonku Babu was not carrying a torch or a lantern. In the first few minutes, he has became aware of
something unusual. Suddenly he realised that the crickets were silent, not one was chirping and it was an eerie
silence and thought that they were asleep.

19. Where did Bonku Babu see the light? Describe it.

Ans. Bonku Babu walked another twenty yards and then he suddenly saw the light.

At first, he thought that a fire had broken out. Bang in the middle of Poncha Ghosh's bamboo grove in the
clearing near a small pond quite a large area was glowing pink. A dull light shone on every branch and leaf
and down below the ground behind the pond was lit by a much stronger pink light. But it was not fire, as it
was still.

20. What did Bonku Babu hear? What drove him further forward?

Ans. Bonku Babu Felt as if a long, steady noise was humming loudly and there was no way he could stop it.

Bonku Babu broke out into goose pimples but an irrepressible curiosity drove him further forward.

21. Where did Bonku Babu see the strange light? Describe it.

Ans. Bonku Babu went past a few clusters of bamboo stems and then an object came into view.

It looked like a giant glass bowl, turned upside down covering the pond completely. It was through its
translucent shade that a strong yet gentle pink light was shining out to turn the whole area radiant.

22. What rendered Bonku Babu completely immobile? How did he feel?

Ans. Bonku Babu felt as if an electric current had passed through his body. In the next instant he was rendered
completely immobile. His hands and feet were tied with an invisible rope. There was no strength left in his
body, he could neither move forward nor backward.

neither move forward nor backward.

23. Describe Ang. In what did he speak and why?

Ans. Ang was barely four feet tall, with thin limbs and weird face. Through the door of the object emerged a
head like a plain, smooth ball and then the body of a weird creature. Its arms and legs were completely thin.
With the exception of its head, its whole body was covered by a shiny pink outfit. Instead of ears, it had tiny
holes on each side of its head. On the face were two holes where there should have been a nose, and another
gaping hole instead of mouth. There was no sign of hair anywhere, its eyes were round and bright yellow and
they appeared to be glowing in the dark. Ang was eight hundred thirty three years old.

Ang thought that he had landed on Pluto so he spoke to the language they use on Pluto.

24. What reason did Ang give for landing on Earth?

Ans. Ang said that his instruments were not working properly. He was supposed to go to Pluto. He was not
sure where he landed so he spoke to Bonku Babu the language they use on Pluto and when he did not reply he
could tell that he had landed on Earth.
