I GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ENGLISH

A ORIGIN OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

English is an Indo-European Germanic language originating in England which
draws its roots from languages of northern Europe (homeland of the Angles,
Saxons and Frisians) whose vocabulary has been enriched and the syntax and
the grammar modified by Anglo-Norman French, brought by the Normans, then
by French with the Plantagenets. The English language is thus made up of
approximately 29% of words of Norman and French origin and more than two
thirds of its vocabulary comes from French or Latin. English is also very
influenced by Romance languages, particularly by the use of the Latin alphabet
as well as Arabic numerals.

B PLACE OF ENGLISH IN THE WORLD

The de facto official language of the United Kingdom, Ireland and other islands
of the British archipelago (Isle of Man, Channel Islands), English is the mother
tongue of all or part of the population, and depending on the case, the
language or one of the official languages of several countries, totally or partially
resulting from the former British colonies of settlement, including the United
States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, which are grouped under the term
"Anglo-Saxon world", although there is no universal definition of this
expression.

It is also an official language or language of exchange in many countries from

the former British Empire, even in the absence of a significant population of
Anglo-Saxon origin (Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan ,
Singapore, etc.). Many countries where English is the official language are
united within the Commonwealth (although for some it is not the only official
language). It is also one of the twenty-four official languages of the European
Union and one of the six official languages and two working languages with
French of the United Nations (UN).
English is the most widely spoken language in the world; as a native language, it
ranks third, after Chinese (Mandarin) and Spanish.
Considered by many to be the predominant international language, it is the
language most often taught as a foreign language throughout the world. It is
also the most used language on the Internet.

ADVANTAGES OF ENGLISH

In addition to offering employment opportunities, being able to speak a foreign

language helps you establish a real connection with people and learn more about
different places, cultures, and ways of life. The more you master a language, the
better you will be able to express yourself. In the lines to follow, I will talk
about the general and specific advantages of the English language in the world.

A GENERAL BENEFITS

 English is the language of international communication

Although not the most widely spoken language in the world, English is the
official language in 53 countries and is spoken as a first language by
approximately 400 million speakers worldwide. But that's not all, it is also the
second most common language in the world.

Therefore, it is very likely that if you meet someone from another country, you
will both be able to speak English. It opens a door to the world and helps you
communicate with international citizens.

 English provides access to more internet content and entertainment

Today, many films, television series, books and music are published and
produced in English. By understanding English, you will no longer be dependent
on translations and subtitles. By accessing these media, you will continually
improve your oral and written comprehension skills. English is currently the
language of the Internet. Around 565 million people use the Internet every day
and around 52% of the most visited websites are displayed in English.
Therefore, learning this language gives you access to more than half of the
content on the Internet that would probably not be available otherwise. Whether
for leisure or work, if you understand English, you will be able to exchange
information with more people online and use many more resources.

 English makes travel more accessible

As noted above, with English spoken as a first language in 53 countries and as a

second language in 118 countries, learning this language allows you to travel
everywhere much more easily. Indeed, airport announcements, train schedules,
emergency information and road signs are often in English, even in countries
where the native language uses a different alphabet. It goes without saying that
when you travel to a country where you don't speak the language, you are almost
guaranteed to find someone who understands some English.

B SPECIFIC ADVANTAGES

 ENGLISH AND JOB OPPORTUNITY

Learning foreign languages not only brings personal fulfillment, it can also bring
financial reward. In fact, an employee who masters several foreign languages
can earn up to 10 to 15% more than their colleague who does not speak these
languages. Learning a foreign language like English offers other advantages
among
 NEW JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Possessing a certificate or other proof of proficiency in a language opens the

door to a variety of job opportunities that are not accessible to candidates
speaking only one language, for example. These possibilities exist in the areas:
 marketing
 transportation,
 administration,
 sales,
 retail trade,
 form the bank,
 education,
 law,
 communication,
 public relations,
 tourism,
 of the government,
 etc.

 INCREASE THE CHANCES OF BEING HIRED

It's no surprise that most companies need bilingual or multilingual employees.
A multilingual candidate will be more attractive than a candidate who only
speaks one language. In fact, more than 60% of companies that wish to do
business in a foreign country are unable to do so because they do not have
enough multilingual employees. For any company (especially exporting
companies) being able to speak a foreign language automatically makes a
candidate an attractive proposition.
 HIGHER SALARIES
It's a simple matter of supply and demand. Employees who can speak more
than one language are in higher demand than those who cannot, because there
are fewer of them. Therefore, multilingual employees also come at a higher
price.
 CAREER PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES
Being able to speak one or more foreign languages and having experience with
different cultures allows employees to obtain promotions and higher-level
positions. Large companies need managers who can travel internationally to
close deals and oversee operations. Small businesses need multilingual
employees who can help explore new business opportunities in foreign
countries and establish new overseas operations.

 ENGLISH AND BUSINESS

In the world of business, business English has become essential as a means of

communication. It is a sure value that facilitates professional integration at the
local and international level. This skill opens the door to numerous trade or
exchange opportunities.Work internationally, travel or even trade. These are,
among many others, the objectives that business English can allow you to
achieve.

 DEVELOPMENT OF FOREIGN MARKETS

In order to find new markets abroad and expand your activities, you absolutely
must know how to express yourself in English. This is an advantage that will
open doors to new horizons for you. For example, you will be able to find
suppliers who offer cheaper prices than local ones.

Whatever your international objectives, opening up to ambitious projects such

as the development of new markets to establish your products or services, the
use of the English language becomes an essential tool for communicating.
Whether it is opening new branches in an English-speaking environment,
presenting your products or services to a larger number of consumers,
developing international business relationships, exchanging and negotiating
with these new partners, the Using business English is essential. This linguistic
skill will allow you to gradually develop your international network whatever
your field. You will easily find new clients and can even hire employees for
subcontracting, for example.

communicate fluently in English with the right business terms will undoubtedly
make your travels easier, both personally and professionally. Not only will you
be more comfortable communicating your needs at the airport, at the hotel
and while traveling, but you will also be able to have good conversations with

greater self-confidence during your speeches and this aspect can only be
beneficial for you and your business.

III LEARNING ENGLISH IN BENIN

Having become an ''indispensable'', learning English has for a very long time
been possible everywhere throughout the world. Benin is no exception. The
teaching of English is a reality in schools.

A SCHOOL LEARNING

As far back as I can remember, I was never taught English in primary school.
Public primary schools do not teach English. In contrast, private primary
schools, understanding the importance of the English language and being ever
more excellent, taught and still teach English to students.

Benin officially decides to introduce the English language in the primary cycle
of public education, from the start of the school year on September 18, 2017.
This decision is the result of the Council of Ministers meeting in ordinary
session on Wednesday August 2, 2017, under the presidency of the head of state,
Patrice Talon.

The second cycle offered and still offers the possibility of learning English from
the 6th grade.

INTRODUCTION

Language is our main source of communication. It is the method by which we

share our ideas and thoughts with others. Some people even say that language is
what separates us from animals and makes us human. There are thousands of
languages in this world. Countries have their own national languages in addition
to a variety of local languages spoken and understood by their people in
different regions. Some languages are spoken by millions of people, others by
only a few thousand.
English is one of the languages spoken among many others around the world.
Currently, English is the primary language not only of countries actively
affected by British imperialism, but also of many business and cultural circles
dominated by these countries.
It is the language of Hollywood, Internet, Science, Commerce, Business and the
language of international banks and corporations. As such, it is a useful and
even necessary language to know.

This means that for me, a French speaker living in Benin, learning English
means opening myself up to the world and giving me a place of choice in the job
market.

Now, where does English come from?, what is its place in the world ? what are
the advantages of mastering this language on the job market and in business ? Is
English taught in Benin ?
Here, among other things, are some issues to be clarified in the lines to follow.

On that, enjoy your reading !!!

CONCLUSION

What to remember after all this recorded information ?

Remember that English is essentially the language of England. It spread

throughout the world as a result of colonization. It is today the most spoken
language in the world and it occupies a place of choice in certain
fields such as entertainment, science, the Internet, the business world...

Traveling means having a one in three chance of chat with someone who speaks
English. Thus, mastering the same language as the latter would naturally
facilitate the conversation.
For me, who aims for business and has no problem getting hired, being able to
speak English, in addition to my very excellent command of French, places me
in a very restricted circle on the job market. This is cool considering I've been
learning this language since 6th grade, and I continue to do so currently under
the banner of TBC AFRICA - USA. With this training. I improved
considerably. Which delights me deeply.
