Chap 2 - Frequencies
Tips

1. Open SPSS, then open your dataset to load it into the SPSS window.
2. To know more about a variable:
a. Click on the Variable View tab at the bottom of the screen.
b. Then, click on the variable name in the Name column.
c. Right click to see the information about that variable.
d. Once the small window opens, choose Variable Information.
3. Sorting variables by alphabetic order:
a. Click of Name at the top of the SPSS window to highlight all variables on that column.
b. While the cursor is on Name and that column is still highlighted, right-click.
c. Then, choose the way you want to order the variables (descending or ascending).

Producing frequency distributions

4. Variables of interest for today:

a. POLVIEWS (Think of self as liberal or conservative)
b. DEGREE (R’s highest degree)
c. AGE (Age of respondent)
5. To run frequencies
a. Go to Analyze > Descriptive Statistics > Frequencies.
b. To select a variable, quickly type the first words of the variable label in the variable box.

6. Outputs:
a. Once you select the variables above, click on the OK box above.
b. Your output will be like what is given in the table below.
c. The first table gives the summaries about number of valid and missing cases.
d. The subsequent tables give the frequency distributions of each of the variables we
included above (note that I only showing the Degree here, but you should see all three
variables after you ran the above window).

e. What is the level of measurement of each of these three variables?

i. POLVIEWS
ii. DEGREE
iii. AGE

7. Recoding variables:
a. Go to Data > Define Variable Properties
b. Then, choose the variable (following the same instruction in 5.b above).
c. The chosen variable is POLIVIEWS “Think of self as…”
d. Note the value for each label (category) that comes on the screen below because we will
use those to recode the variable.
e. Ready to recode:
i. Now go to Transform > Recode into Different Variables
ii. Choose the variable following 5.b tip
iii. Give the new name (POLOR) and new label (Political orientation)
iv. Proceed with recoding
v. Tips:
1. The new variable will be at the bottom of the variable list
2. Add new value labels to the new variable
vi. Run the frequency tables of old and new variables to compare:
