Lesson # 7.2- Engagement of Parents and the Wider Community in the Educative
Process

ASSESSMENT – Groupings by School Assignment

Direction: Ask permission from your resource teacher or the head teacher at your cooperating
school to conduct an interview.

1. Does the school have an active PTA? When did it start, and how long has the
PTA been established? Who is the current PTA president?

Yes, that the school has an active PTA organization, as to when did it start Im not
sure when was the exact date, but I think it started when the school was founded since,
PTA is an important partner of the school especially when it comes to student’s
concerns. The current PTA President is Mr. Ramil Nunez

2. What are the usual issues and concerns raised by parents during PTA meetings?

The usual issues and concerns raised by the parents during meetings, they
would ask about the performance of their child, the rights of their child in certain
situations. And also, about their role as to how they can help to improve the
performance of their child.

3. Does the school engage parents and members of the community in the
implementation of school programs? If yes, how? If not, why?

Yes, the school and community are partners when it comes to implementation of
the program for their support is very important in the realization of the objective and
purpose of the program especially when it comes to the concerns of their child, and I do
believe that in order to fully develop the students holistically the school, parents,
community and religious organization should work hand in hand as the popular saying
goes “it takes a community to educate the person” so everyone has its own role in
realizing this dream and that is to educate the person holistically to become a better and
good citizens and to be globally competitive.

4. Describe the relationship of teachers with parents and members of the

community.

As of this time, according to my resource teacher, students are being spoon feed
and pampered in our present educational system, wherein we can really see based on
their performance in school, community and even in their own home. We see that it is
sad to see that the learning of the child is deteriorating, because they have less value
and importance when it comes to education. Unlike before that parents are the first to
really make sure that their child is performing, well the teachers and parents are
partners, but in the present situation I can say that teacher and parents are enemy
when it comes to educating and disciplining of their child, because the performance of
the child is low, the parents would ask “ngano mani ma’am”. It seems that they are
putting the blame on the parents, but before when the child would fail, they are scolded
by the parents. And when there are lots of activities, projects to be done by the child the
parents would encourage them, but now parents are first one to complain. So that’s why
I can say that the relationship of teachers and members of the community is not good.

Please read carefully and answer the following questions.

1. What are the advantages of involving parents and community members in the
development of school programs?
The advantages of involving parents and the community in developing a school
program are that first, the teacher can share the problems regarding the student’s
development, just like their health issues and the attitude of students towards their teacher
and their classmates, where some of it is caused by family problems and anxiety. By the
active participation and cooperation of the school and community we can address some
student learning issue and will successfully achieve what are the desired learning
competencies that students should learn. It will help to improve students’ achievement
inside the school, having good grades and it will result to positive view on the importance of
education and because of that they will do better. Just like when I attend once in a PTA
meeting some teachers open about the problem of student’s absenteeism or they do cutting
classes after lunch and some teacher cannot control that kind of students behavior so it is
important that the parents and the community should be aware of students behavior outside
the school. Also, when I was in high school, there was a program where I think all of the
schools had this policy that the community should be responsible for their businesses, just
like in a computer shop where some students do cutting classes and play computer games
after morning classes even though they still have afternoon classes, so the business owner
should prohibit students from entering the shop during the said time.

2. How can you collaborate effectively with the parents? What can you do to assist
them? As a future teacher, develop an activity plan outlining how you would establish
effective home-school collaboration.

To effectively collaborate with the parents, first, as a teacher, it is important to

communicate with the parents of your students by giving them invitation letters,

preparing a program about what your topic is all about, and presenting it to them.
During the presentation, it is important to be honest about the real problems of the
school or inside the classroom, and after discussing all the necessary things, as a
teacher, you must ask regarding the opinion of the parents and guardians of your
students. Then vote for the recommended solution and ask if everyone agrees with
it. This is one of the basic ways to effectively collaborate with parents, and by doing
so, it will prevent misunderstandings and ensure that there is no bias regarding the
ideas that have been shared since they were voted on by many. Activity plan
outlining how you would establish effective home-school collaboration. First, do
communicate with the parents monthly by sending emails, chats, or even
newsletters to them. Share your ideas during the Parent-Teacher Association, and it
is also important to acknowledge their ideas and opinions too. Third, if you see some
changes in a student's behavior, let his or her parents know. Be responsible and
honest with your observations inside the classroom so that the parents can help with
the problem. Be mindful every time you have a meeting. Try to address all the
issues and search for the best solution. And lastly, ask parents’ permission about
collecting or having programs.
