MATH 326: Boundary Value Problems

Instructor: Dr. M. Bautista Due Date:

1. (Review of initial/boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations) Determine

the solutions, if any, to each of the following boundary value problems. Here, u = u(x), a
function of only one variable.
 ′′ ′
 ′′ ′
u − 4u + 13u = 0, 0 < x < π
 u + 5u − 14u = 0

(a) u(0) = 0 (d) u(0) = 5
u′ (0) = 1.
 
u(π) = 0.
 
 ′′ ′
 ′′
u + 4u + 8u = 0, 0 < x < π
 u + u = 0, 0 < x < 2π

(b) u (0) = 0 (e) u(0) = 0

 
 u (π) = 0.  u(2π) = 1.
 ′′  ′′
u + 9u = 0, 0 < x < π
 u + u = 0, 0 < x < 2π

(c) u(0) = 0 (f) u(0) = 1
 u′ (π) = −6.
 
 u(2π) = 1.

2. (Sturm-Liouville Problems) Find values of λ , a real number and called eigenvalues, for
which the following problems have nonzero or nontrivial solutions φ (x) called eigenfunc-
tions. Also determine these corresponding nonzero solutions.
 ′′  ′′ ′

 φ + λ φ = 0, 0 < x < π φ − 2φ + λ φ = 0, 0 < x < π

(a) φ (0) = 0 (c) φ (0) = 0
 φ ′ (π) = 0.
 
 φ (π) = 0.
 ′′
φ ′′ + λ φ = 0, 0 < x < 2π
π

φ + λ φ = 0, 0 < x < 2
 

(b) φ ′ (0) = 0 (d) φ (0) − φ (2π) = 0
φ ′ ( π2 ) = 0. φ ′ (0) − φ ′ (2π) = 0.

 

3. In each of the following problems, determine whether the method of separation of variables
can be used to replace the partial differential equation by a pair of ordinary differential
equations. If so, find the equations.

(a) xuxx + ut = 0 (d) uxx + uyy + xu = 0

(b) uxx + uxt + ut = 0 (e) ux + 2uy − u = 0
(c) uxx + (x + y)uyy = 0

4. Solve the resulting pairs of ordinary differential equations in problem (3b) and (3e).
