LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

The Real Number System

Background Information

This learning activity sheet discusses the definition of the real numbers. It also deals
with the two types of real numbers. Real numbers are very useful in everyday life. It helps us
count and measure out quantities of different items. Thus, it is important to know the different
types of real numbers. These are discussed in this learning activity sheet.
The real number is the set of numbers containing the rational and irrational numbers.
There exists a one-to-one correspondence between the set of real number and the points on the
number line. There are infinitely many points on the line as there are infinitely many real
numbers.
Real numbers consist of zero (0); the positive integers also called counting numbers or
natural numbers {1, 2, 3, 4, … ,15, … } (the three dots in the notation is called an “ellipsis”
which indicates that there are more/other numbers aside from the given numbers); their
opposites or the negative integers {−1, −2, −3, −4, … , −15, … }; the fractions and/or decimal
1 5
values in between the integers (0.4, 3. 1415927, 1/2). {0.4, 3.1415927, … , 2 , − 6 , … }; the
whole numbers are the set of natural numbers, plus zero, i.e., {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …}.

Learning Competency: (Quarter 1, week 1)

Illustrate the different subsets of real numbers.

Take a look on the chart below to familiarize yourself on the real number system.

What is a rational number?
𝑃
A rational number is the one which can be represented in the form of 𝑄 where P and Q
are integers and Q ≠ 0.

Examples:
9
1. Number 9 can be written as where 9 and 1 are integers.
1
5 1 10
2. 0.5 can be written as , , .
10 2 20
9
3. √81 is a rational number, as it can be simplified to 9 and can be expressed as .
1
4. 0.77777 is recurring decimal and is rational number.

What is an Irrational number?

Irrational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as an infinite decimal with no set of
consecutive digits repeating itself indefinitely and that cannot be expressed as the quotient of two
integers.

Examples:

1. 𝛱 is an irrational number which has value 3.142… and is a never-ending and repeating
number.
2. √2 is an irrational number, as it can be simplified.
3. 0.212112111 … is an irrational number as it is non-recurring and non-terminating.

Activity 1. Can you identify me?

Directions: Tell whether the given number is rational or irrational. Write your answer on the
blank before each item.

Activity 2. Give Me, Give Me.
Directions: A. Give 3 examples on the rational numbers and irrational numbers. Write your
answer in the tab provided below.

Whole Number Fraction Negative Integer Irrational Number

B. Read and analyze each statement below and write True if it is correct and False if not.

_______1. All whole numbers are integers.

_______2. Some integers are fractions.
_______3. Irrational numbers such as – 1, √25, 0.01111 are real numbers.
_______4. Zero is a whole number.
_______5. Rational numbers are whole numbers.
_______6. Fractions are rational numbers.
_______7. All real numbers are irrational.
_______8. Every whole umber is a natural number.
_______9. All integers are whole numbers.
_______10. Zero is a rational number.

Closure
There are two types of real numbers. The rational numbers and irrational numbers.
The rational numbers include the positive and negative integers and fractions. Whereas,
irrational are numbers that cannot be expressed into fractions.
