MODULE

1 Multiplying Polynomials Notes:

TARGET

After studying this module, the students will be able to:

Polynomial
a. Identify the different rules/methods in multiplying polynomials.
b. Determine the differences and uses of those methods in
multiplying different kinds of polynomials.
c. Multiply polynomials using the given methods.

GET READY: LAWS OF EXPONENTS (Part 1) Monomial

1. PRODUCT RULE: Keep the base and add the exponents.
m+n
(a ¿¿ m)( a¿¿ n)=a ¿¿

Examples: 3
y ∙y =y
7 3+7
=y
10

3 2
2 ∙2 =¿

2. POWER RULE: Keep the base and multiply the exponents. Binomial
m n m∙ n
(a ) =a

Examples: 2 5
( x ) =x =x
2 ∙5 10

2 4
(3 ) =¿

3. POWER OF A PRODUCT: Distribute the exponents to each of the

factors and then multiply.
n
(ab) =a b
n n
Trinomial
Examples: 3 3 3
(2 ∙5) =2 ∙ 5 =8 ∙ 125=1000
3 4
(3 a ) =¿

DEVELOP THE SKILLS

Multiplying polynomials requires your knowledge on the laws

of exponents and the following methods:

3. Special Products:
a. Square of a Binomial:
2 2 2
(a+ b) =a +2 ab+ b Give all the
2 2 2
(a−b) =a −2 ab+ b perfect square
Example: (3 x−5)2=¿ ¿ = _____________ numbers from
1 to 100.
