Chemistry

Unit: 1 (Some basic concepts of Chemistry)

LEVEL 1

1. In the combustion of methane, what is the limiting reactant and why? [Hint:CH4 and is in less
amount]. (1)
2. What is average atomic mass? Why do atomic masses of most of the elements in atomic mass
unit involve fraction? [Hint: Because it is average of all isotopes multiplied with abundance].
(2)
3.20 ml of dil. HNO3 is neutralized completely with 25 ml of 0.08 M NaOH. What is the
molarity of HNO3? [Using the formula M1V1=M2V2 ; M1=?] Ans:0.1M (2)

4. A sample of NaNO3 weighing 0.38g is placed in a 50 ml measuring flask. The flask is

then filled with water up to the mark of the neck. What is the molarity of the solution?
[Hint givenbelow:

]
(2)

5. 3.0g of H2 react with 29.0g of O2 to form H2O.

(i) Which is the limiting reagent?

(ii) Calculate the maximum amount of H2O that can be formed?

[Hint given below:

2H2(g)+O2(g)⟶2H2O(aq)

From the above equation, it is clear that 2 mole H2 reacts with 1 mole O2

4 g of H2 reacts with 32 g of O2

3 g of H2 reacts with [(32/4)×3] g of O2

3 g of H2 reacts with 24 g of O2 ; So, 3 g of hydrogen will be the limiting reagent.

From the above equation, 2 moles of H2 reacts to form 2 moles of H2O, therefore, 4 g of
H2 produces = 36 g of H2O

So, the amount of H2O produced by 3 g H2 = [(36/4) x 3] g of H2O= 27 g of H2O (3)

LEVEL 2

6. Write down the empirical formula for acetic acid. [Ans:CH2O] (1)

7. Give two examples of

molecules whose empirical and molecular formulas are the same. [Ans:H2O, CO2 etc] (1)

8. Calculate the molarity of pure water. (Given: Density of water = 1 g mL-1) [Hint given

below:Mass of 1000 mL of water = Volume x Density =1000 x 1 = 1000 g

Moles of water = 1000/18 = 55.55

Now 55.55 moles of H2O are present in 1000 ml or 1L of water. Therefore, Molarity = 55.55 M]

9. What is the percentage of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in ethanol? [Hint given
below:The percentage of Carbon is:
24.0 g/mol ÷ 46.0 g/mol × 100 = 52.2 % of Carbon

The percentage of Hydrogen is:

6.0 g/mol ÷ 46.0 g/mol ×100 = 13.0 % of Hydrogen.

The percentage of Oxygen is:

16.0 g/mol ÷ 46.0 g/mol × 100 = 34.8 % of Oxygen.] (2)

10. Calculate the volume at STP occupied by:

(i) 14g of Nitrogen gas (ii) 1.5 moles of CO2 (iii) 1021 molecules of Oxygen

(3)

[Hint given below: (i) 28g of N2(g) = 22.4 L therefore, 14 g of N2(g) = 11.2 L

(ii) 1 mole of CO2(g)= 22.4 L therefore, 1.5 moles of CO2(g)= 22.4 x 1.5

(iii) 6.023 x 1023 molecules of O2(g) = 22.4 L

therefore,1021 molecules=22.4 x 1021/6.023 x 1023]

11. What weight of calcium contains the same no. of atoms as are present in 3.2g of Sulphur.

(3)

[Hint given below:

12. W
hat volume of oxygen at NTP is needed to cause the complete combustion of 200 ml of
acetylene (C2H2)? Also calculate the volume of CO2 formed? (3)

[Hint given below:

13. Ho
w much hydrogen will be liberated if 6.5 g of Zn is added to 1L of a hydrochloric acid
solution containing 3.65 g of HCl per litre? Which reactant will be left behind when the
reaction stops? How much of it will be left behind? (3)

[And: 0.138 g of H2, HCl is the limiting reagent.]

14. Calculate the empirical and molecular formula of the compound having the
followingpercentage composition;

Na =36.5 % (at.mass=23), H = 0.8%(at.mass=1), P =24.6%(at.mass=30.97)

O =38.1 % (at.mass=16). The molecular mass of compound is 126 a.m.u.

16. What do you understand by 1-M solution of NaOH? (1)

[Ans: 1M NaOH means 1 mole of NaOH per litre of solution.]

17. The two oxides of a metal contain 36.4% and 53.4% of oxygen by mass respectively. If the
formula of first oxide is M2O. What is the formula of other oxide? [Ans: MO]

18. What is the mole fraction of a solute in 2.5 m aqueous solution? [Ans: 0.043]

19. A compound contains 42.3913% K, 15.2173% Fe, 19.5652% C and 22.8260% N. The
molecular mass of compound is 368 u. Find the molecular formula. (3)

[Hint given below:
