Before installing the facilities where required (Piping, Cables etc.,) necessary bedding shall be
made as required to avoid damage to the facilities as specified in project specifications or by
specification of concerned authority.
Before backfilling all the underground Facilities/Structure/Cables shall be installed testing, by
the Third Party, shall be completed where applicable and witness by the Employer's
Representative and recorded as per ITP.
All the back fill materials should be tested and evaluated for the applicable grade and suitability.
The source details of the borrow materials shall be submitted to the Employer's Representative
for approval. No material shall be brought to the site until the material is approved by the
Employer's Representative.
Backfilling shall be placed in uniform layers of the specified thickness and wetting operations,
if required, shall be carried out in a way so that uniform moisture content is assured throughout
each layer.
2. Compaction
Note that particular specification shall be applied to compaction around and above district
cooling pipe work and these will be issued by the concerned authority in the near future
3. Structural Backfilling
Trenches shall not be backfilled until all required tests and inspection are performed and the
service therein approved by Employer's Representative and concerned authority.
Trenches shall be backfilled to the finished grade with suitable material for the specified degree
of compaction as applicable to the particular area.
Trenches improperly backfilled shall be reopened to the depth required for the proper degree
of compaction and then refilled and compacted.
The surface shall be restored to its original condition as near as practicable.
Special care shall be taken to provide a firm sand bedding / suitable material to the bottom of
the pipe and fittings or any services for the full length of the pipe. Where the pipe is coated or
insulated, great care shall be exercised in padding and backfilling to prevent damages to the
coating or insulation.
After the pipe has been thoroughly bedded and covered and provide suitable caution tape or
concrete slab etc, and the trench shall be backfilled with suitable excavated material.
Backfilling material shall be evenly spread for the full width of the trench in layers not
exceeding150 mm in compacted thickness.
Each layer shall be compacted to the specified density as applicable to the particular area
crossed by the trench.
The protective concrete tiles, as shown in the drawings, shall be placed after the services have
been covered with sand or suitable material and layers compacted and remainder of trench shall
be backfilled.
4. Foreman/Supervisor:
The Forman/supervisor will be responsible for the following,
To provide the Site Engineer with daily progress reports and discuss with him planned works
for the next day.
To ensure that all safety measures are maintained at site and workers have proper training for
following all current safety guidelines and housekeeping in accordance with the Main
Contractors Safety Officer.
To ensure good housekeeping is practiced and proper tools are being used by the site team.
To ensure that all persons involved in the works are aware of their duties, and that they have
enough understanding of safety procedures.
To conduct frequent toolbox meeting on safety awareness and to maintain a log of all meetings
for inspection.
To keep a record of all toolbox talks.
Liaises with the required personnel at the site for the required inspections with regards to safety.
Attends all the safety coordination meetings.
Ensure that the basic and activity specific PPE is worn regularly by the site working team.
5. Equipment Requirements
The equipment that will be engaged for Backfilling and Excavation work will be as follows
Site In-charge.
Charge Hand.
Surveyor.
Operator.
Skilled Labour.
Unskilled Labour.
Backhoe excavator JCB
Shovel.
Dump Truck.
Compactor
Plan and schedule the jobs, determine priorities, control workload, inspect projects and keep
sufficient time records for workflow and outputs.
Performs technical responsibilities and make decisions to a substantial extent.
Reviews and interprets proposed designs, drawings, and specifications for appropriateness to
required function and/or standard and initiates revisions.
Ensure that project operations are in compliance with design specifications
To provide all the necessary information to the site team.
Engineer/Supervisor in charge to conduct a toolbox meeting and communicate both the Method
Statement & Risk Assessment to the workers before commencement of the activity.
All safety precautions shall be followed as per established project safety procedure.
Only experienced and skilled labour shall be engaged for carrying out screed work.
People involved in the construction work shall wear PPE such as safety helmets, safety shoes,
safety harness, gloves safety glass, mask etc.as required.
All Hose pipe joints are properly connected and tied with clips.
Safety officer shall check and ensure that all safety precautions are followed.
All the safety equipment's shall be periodically inspected and checked for its durability before
using them to labour.
Manual handling procedures to be followed
Any incident or near miss incident shall be reported immediately to the concerned safety officer.
The various type of fill including common fill, selected structural fill, clean sand, sand and all
type of road base shall be compacted as per contract specification or requirements.
Common fill material shall be compacted to at least 98% for Roads & other structure, 95% for
general fill. The dry density to be obtained by the Modified Proctor Test, ASTM D-1577.
Granular fill material shall be compacted to at least 95% and 98% respectively of the maximum
dry density obtained by the Modified Proctor Test, ASTM D-1577.
Clean sand and sand shall be compacted to at least 95% and 90% respectively of the maximum
dry density obtained by the Modified Proctor Test, ASTM D-1577.
Frequency of in-situ testing shall be followed as specified in contract specification
All granular material (selected structural fill material), asphalt materials, clean sand, sand and
crushed stone material shall be tested in accordance with ASTM D-1140, ASTM D-4318 and
ASTM D-1557 and project specifications
