CASE BASED QUESTIONS

Q.1. Read the para and answer the questions (a) to (d).
You must have seen green threads of pea plants coiling around the support and help the shoot to climb
up the support. They are tendrils. A young tendril performs circular movements. When it comes in
contact with a support, it coils around it. The coiling is caused by decreased presence of auxin in the
region of contact and increased concentration of auxin on the free side. Coiling of tendril is a tropic
movement in response to stimulus of contact. It is called thigmotropism.
(a) What is tropic movement ?
(b) Define thigmotropism.
(c) How does a tendril come in contact with its support ?
(d) What mechanism operates in coiling of tendril around a support ?
Q.2.Rather than having to think about the sensation of heat, if the nerves that detect heat were to be
connected to the nerves that move muscles in a simpler way, the process of detecting the signal or the
input and responding to it by an output action might be completed quickly. Such a connection is
commonly called a reflex arc. Reflex arcs are formed in spinal cord itself, although the information input
also goes on to reach the brain.
Of course, reflex arcs have evolved in animals because the thinking process of the brain is not fast
enough. In fact many animals have very little or none of the complex neuron network needed for
thinking. So it is quite likely that reflex arcs have evolved as efficient ways of functioning in the absence
of true thought processes.

After going through the paragraph, answer the questions (a) to (e) that follow :
(a) Which action gives the fastest response ?
(1) Sight of a snake

(4) Relay neurons.
(d) Which one originated first
(1) Nervous system with thinking ability
(2) Reflex action with simple nervous system
(3) Hormonal system
(4) Neuroendocrine system

(e) How is sensation connected with response in reflex are ?

(1) Through spinal cord
(2) By relay neuron
(3) Both 1 and 2
(4) Brain

Q.3 Adrenaline is secreted directly into the blood and carried to different parts of the body. The target
organs or the specific tissues on which it acts include the heart. As a result, the heart beats faster,
resulting in supply of more oxygen to our muscles. The blood to the digestive system and skin is reduced
due to contraction of muscles around small arteries in these organs. This diverts the blood to our
skeletal muscles. The breathing rate also increases because of the contraction of the diaphragm and the
rib muscles. All these responses together enable the animal body to be ready to deal with a scary
situation.

Study the above paragraph and answer questions (a) to (f) with correct options.
(a) Adrenaline is called triple F hormone. What are the triple Fs ?
(1) Fight, fright and flight

(1) Increasing rate of oxygenation of blood
(2) Anaerobic respiration in muscles
(3) Shivering of the body
(4) Quicker release of wastes.

(d) What is the role of lungs for higher oxygenation of blood ?

(1) Increasing rate of breathing
(2) Dilation of bronchioles
(3) Rapid contraction of phrenic and intercostal muscles
