Grade 8

Revolution is also abbreviated as ‘rev.’ Like any circle, a clock contains a total of 360𝑜 . Because
the clock face is divided into 12 equal parts, we can find the number of degrees between each
360𝑜
number by dividing, = 30𝑜 . Therefore, the angle formed between two hands on a clock is
12
30𝑜 .
For example: It is 4 o’clock. What is the measure of the angle formed between the hour hand
and the minute hand?
1) At 4:00, the hour hand is on the 4 and the minute hand is at the 12. There are 12 spaces
4
on a clock, and these hands are separated by 4 spaces. Thus, the angle between them is 12
the degrees of the entire clock, which is 360𝑜 . Therefore, we multiply these to get our
answer.
4
× 360𝑜 = 120𝑜
12

OR
If it is 4:00, then the minute hand is pointing towards 12 while the hour hand points towards 4.
Therefore, we can say that the angle between the two hands is 30𝑜 × 4 = 120𝑜 .

Try this:
1) If it is 2:00 PM, what is the measure of the angle between the minute and hour hands of
the clock?
So again we can approach this two ways.
2
• × 360 = 60𝑜
12

OR
• 2 × 30𝑜 = 60𝑜

2) What is the measure of the smaller angle formed if the hour hand is on the 10 and the
minute hand is on the 2?
A clock is divided up into 12 sectors, based on the numbers 1–12. We can recall that one sector
360
represents 30 degrees ( 12 = 30𝑜 ). If the hour hand is directly on the 10, and the minute hand is
on the 2, that means there are 4 sectors of 30 degrees between then, thus they are 120 degrees
apart (30𝑜 × 4 = 120𝑜 ).
Try these on your own:
3) At 5:00, what angle is between the hour and minute hand on a clock?

4) What is the measure of a reflex angle formed when the hands of the clock are on 2 and 9?

Measuring and Drawing Angles

A protractor is used to measure angles, typically in the form of a flat semicircle marked with
degrees with markings from 0° to 180° on it along the curved edge.

■ Protractors usually have two sets of numbers going in opposite directions.

■ The inner readings and outer reading supplements each other. i.e, they add up to 180°.
■ If the angle to be measured is at the left part of the protractor, we need to use the outer
reading of the protractor. ∠AOC = 60°. See in the picture below.
■ If the angle to be measured is at the right part of the protractor, we need to use the inner
readings of the protractor. ∠BOC = 120°. See in the picture below.
■ An angle is formed between two rays. To use the protractor and measure angles we can
follow the steps below:
Step 1:
■ Align the baseline of the protractor with the line.
Step 2
■ Place the center circle of the protractor at the vertex.
Step 3
■ Identify the reading on the protractor where the ray is extending.

Let’s take a look at the example below:

■ Let us use the protractor and measure the angle ∠COB. Align the baseline of the
protractor with the line AB. The center circle of the protractor at the vertex O. Now,
identify the reading on the protractor where ray C is extending.
Drawing Angles
The protractor can also be used to draw angles between 𝟎𝒐 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝟏𝟖𝟎𝒐 directly or angles
between 𝟏𝟖𝟎𝒐 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝟑𝟔𝟎𝒐 𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒍𝒚.

Use your protractor to draw each of the following angles accurately:

a) 𝟑𝟓𝒐
b) 𝟏𝟐𝟕𝒐
c) 𝟑𝟎𝟎𝒐
