E.S Space Shuttle Orbiter Vehicle and NASA Shuttle Carrier Aircraft
A modified Boeing 747-100 aircraft is the carrier vehicle used in ferrying the
Orbiter from the manufacturing or landing site back to launch site. The general
dimensions and weights of the Orbiter vehicle and the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft
fSCA) are shown. Should an accident occur when the Orbiter and SCA are mated,
firefighter/rescue personnel must be aware of specific procedures and specific
hazards associated with both vehicles.
For conventional Boeing 747 information, including illustrations of flammable
materials, shutdown requirements, and danger areas, refer to Aircraft Rescue Infor-
mation, Air Force T.O. 00-lOSE, and Fire and Rescue Information for Boeing Jet
Transports, Document 06-7829. Entry and crew doors of the SCA are opened as stan-
dard 747 doors. Doors with escape ramps are located in the extreme front of the
aircraft only. Doors without escape ramps are located throughout the aircraft .
The extreme rear exits have ropes mounted on the interior wall.
