Nishita and you guys played one of the mBloody

eighties. How did you meet Mark?

First of all I just want to say Mark Nishita is the most tal¬
ented artist I've ever met in my life. He’s influenced me big
time. I met him in the theater department at Harbor College.

You are also an actor. What were some of your favorite

movies that you were a part of?

None. The roles I've played were very limited; they didn't
showcase my talent. I've done far better work in theater.

The Chuck Dukowski SEXTET
I’ve known “The Duke” for quite a while now
and he’s always been a straight up positive
guy who will take the time to talk to just about
anyone who comes up to him. Chuck is one of
the smartest and most knowledgeable dudes
you will ever meet & has interesting opinions
on just about anything. We should all be famil¬
iar with his work as the bass player for Black
Flag on some of their more potent early pieces
of work such as the classic “Damaged” LP.
Chuck was also co-owner of SST Records and
also took part in other bands such as Wurm
(pre-Black Flag band), SWA & Fishcamp.
Chuck has never really stopped playing and
recently started his own record label with wife
Lora Norton and they’ve recently released
their own CD6 record called “Eat My Life.”
With all his know how that he has from past
experiences running a label and playing in
bands things are only looking up for this
charismatic DIY (do it yourself) pioneer.

FER YOUz THE BRIAN TUCKER INTERVIEW

By Tony Malone and Iris Berry 7/23/06
Brian Tucker is a Los Angeles born artist who took photographs of the LA punk scene from 1980
to 1986. Brian & his wife Nikki created FIR YOUZ, an 11" x 17" (sometimes bigger) xeroxed photo
collage (free) handout of the previous weeks punk shows and the people who attended them.

Suddenly there was kind of a mix in the scene. The Huntington
Beach crowd started coming up to Hollywood. Bands like Fear
and X started doing records and they were getting bigger.
Those bands were moving on and making way for newer bands
like Black Flag. The hardcore scene started taking over and
then it started getting violent. That alienated the early punk
scene even more. We wanted to make sure we got photos of
that first scene before it was gone.
How was the hardcore scene different than the early LA
Punk scene?
I enjoyed the speed of Black Flag. It was a different kind of
anger. X would do songs like We're Desperate. That was more
of a passive anger like, we're angry and we're trapped. Where
as Black Flag was angry and was gonna do something about it.
It was more of an aggressive anger. Early Black Flag, TSOL &
Circle Jerks were great to watch.
Didn't you see Black Flag perform at Cal Arts in a small
classroom?
Yeah, Rodney was an artist that was doing a lot of the Fear fly¬
ers and he was having a show at Cal Arts in conjunction with
that show. Black Flag was playing up there in a classroom.
That was when Henry first started singing for the band.
Do you have a lot of early pictures of Henry?
The first photo we have of Henry is at the Whisky and all he had
was his Black Flag bars on one arm. He hadn't played a show
yet. I heard he was the new singer so I took a photo of him.
Later on we went to SST where people were getting tattoos.
Dez, Earl from Saccharine Trust and Henry. It was when Henry
got his spider tattoo. We got photos of that. Yeah he didn't

A whole presentation of the scene, not just about the bands.
Graffiti and jewelry and things that happened. So you get a
whole picture. People behind the scene. Like Spot, he produced
and engineered Black Flag and nobody even knows what he
looks like. So there's a photo of him in there. Just because he's
a behind the scenes guy that was creating this thing when
nobody even knew it was of any value. I just want a bigger pic¬
ture than if I just put out a book of Social Distortion pictures.
I'm not interested in that. I want people to get a sense of the
whole scene.

don't eveji care about because I don't know what's important.
I just took the photo. In the end I think my personal taste was
correct. But the scene isn't just that cool jacket. You've got 5
others that are less cool but they are still part of the scene. So
it would be a bad representation to not shoot it. There was all
kinds of shit going on. You can't just shoot at what's cool. It's
not about what's cool it's about what was happening.
Why color?
I was going to paint from these photos so I needed them to be
in color. The second reason for color, because historically in the
end we knew punk rock was going to take over the world,
which it did. So in the end the original image needed to be color.
You could always go from color to black and white.
Thousands of slides and not one of them published, why
is that?
I have control issues. I need to have control of these images. I
haven't needed to sell them. I wasn't in it for the money. I'm
not against money, it helps me to create. I didn't need to live
off of it. I just thought when I could get it in the right context
then the time would be right.

history lesson: The Korean Bell
The landmark by which you use to tell all out-of-towners how to find their way down to the coast. The most oriental
looking thing in Pedro besides the menu at Louie's #2. The gifted silent bell that sits overlooking the ocean, watch¬
ing the pacific and reminding those who care to remember the reasons it's there.

The Korean Bell has been hanging out there in the park for quite some time now, and to most of the people out there
my age it probably carries no meaning besides the fact that it's a damn good looking landmark. I guess it’s time to
start caring because the Bell has come full circle and probably will begin meaning more to us now than it did before.

The Korean Bell was a gift to the people of Los Angeles from the people of the Republic of Korea in 1976. It was a
gift to honor the U.S. veterans that participated in the Korean War, to celebrate America’s bi centennial, and to show
the long-standing friendship between the U.S. and South Korea. The Korean War was a pretty gnarly one, in which
the U.S. went in to Korea to try and help the South Koreans overcome the attack of the North Koreans who were aided
by Communist Russia and armed to the teeth. Even though the war only lasted 3 years and ended with a cease-fire
the casualties were many, but the South was able to remain independent after the conflict ended.

Fast-forward some 53 years and look at the state of affairs today... North Korea is now trying to beef up their arms,

and totalitarian regime, they're a scary bunch. Well, so is most of the Middle East, but what can you do, right?

The bell stands not only as a reminder that the U.S. was at the South Korean’s side in helping them fight back against
their attackers, but also stands as a sign of peace and friendship between America and the Republic of Korea, i

Check out some fun facts:

The bell is patterned after the Bronze Bell of King Songdok, which was created in 1771.

The bell itself weighs 17 tons and is 12 feet tall with a diameter of 7-1/2 feet

The bell itself was cast in Korea and cost $500,000, whereas the structure around the bell was built on site by
30 Korean craftsmen over the span of 10 months at the cost of $569,680.

The bell is rung from the outside with a wooden log and is only rung on four occasions: The 4th of July, Korean
Independence Day (Aug. 15), New Year's Eve and a day in September during Constitution Week.

The twelve pillars around the bell represent the 12 designs of the Oriental Zodiac.

There's talk on the street; it sounds so familiar

THERE’S A NEW BAND IN TOWN

BY COCO CHAPPELLE

THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD TO CANDYLAND

Four dudes: one near tragedy.
This band is amazing; if not for their music
they have a beginning of courage and
earnestness. They all met by chance on a
flight to Venezuela. All seated in the same
row, Todd in his gregarious nature decided
to spice up his business flight by buying his

row mates whiskey and ginger ale also

known as "horsefeathers." They drank fear¬
lessly as they traveled for hours through the
vast blue. By breakfast time they had dis¬
covered that they all played musical instru¬
ments and were traveling for philanthropic
reasons. Jack Doyle - to teach English to children, Dimmy - to teach bongos to babies,
Todd - to bring rock and roll to the people, and Jack Spralja - to bring candy to the
masses [expanding his candy eating empire]. When all of a sudden, wouldn't you
know it, an engine blew out. The dudes were scared shirtless. They swore to each
other as they held hands and clenched their eyes shut that if they come out of this
alive they would start a band. Dust then, the engine started up again and they were
a band and Todd ordered more drinks. So it's Todd and Dimmy from Toys that Kill,
Dack from Full Blast and Dack from Nebraska. Their first release will be a 7" on Rock
Star from Germany, www.myspace.com/theundergroundrailroadtocandylond

THE ALPHABETTES
"Welcome to the Dollhouse" should be this
bands first album title. Not only are they the
newest ladies to rock in San Pedro, they're
also the cutest, and they live together!
Banana and Angela both play guitar in the
band and they both grew up in Anaheim.

her little heart out. After the downfall of

Fourth Street, they all moved to a lovely old
Victorian home in Pedro to take over the role
of the party house. Angela is the homemak¬
er, making lots of fancy meals, Gabby is the
breadwinner bringing home the bacon,
Banana is the lover and the fighter, and their roommate Koby does the dishes. They
were recently interviewed for Fuel TV for a half hour special featuring Mike Watt, Ray
Barbee, Chuck Treece and "The Pedro Scene." Fuel TV even filmed performances by
Watt and The Bettes at the ladies' house. Look for it in the coming months.

BEFORE I KNEW IT, THE DUE DATE FOR THE SECOND INSTALLMENT OF EATING OUT WITH TITO NOT ONLY CREPT

BC Canada to let me know that heads were gonna roll if I didn’t get something across his desk within 36 hours. Luckily
I had everything covered. I took notes during a visit to the San Pedro Brewing Company a few days before embark¬

DISCLAIMER: As stated immediately above, I subscribe to a vegan diet. Therefore I always take guest reviewers out to dinner with me to give a more rounded
perspective of the establishment under review. I think it's a good system and I'm not going to change it any time soon.

^iis is a fat oversized (8 !4” x 11”/ 300 pages) book that covers the various hardcore punk scenes that popped
up in the early 80’s all across America. From the more popular scenes like LA, NY & DC to some of the small¬
er scenes like Iowa, Lawrence, Cincinnati, Austin & Florida. This book takes you from scene to scene as if you
were in a van touring the states for the first time. George Hurchalla delivers the goods with passion & respect
for those who made it happen. A history of the good & bad aspects of the diy movement. Lot’s of great-unpub¬
lished photos & flyers. The cover has a great photo of the late Randy “Biscuit” Turner (Big Boys) giving the
photographer the finger. Tons of factual anecdotes from various musicians, club promoters, zine publishers and
scenesters. This book has been recently compared to the “American Hardcore” book written by Steven Blush,
claiming that Blush’s book is filled with too much inaccurate info and so fourth. I think with any history type
book there are gonna be inaccuracies. Greg Ginn says the same thing about “Get In The Van” by Henry Rollins.
Nicole Panter says the same thing about “Lexicon Devil” by Brendan Mullen (Don Bolles & Adam Parfrey). I’m
sure there will be people whining about this book also. All in all, this is a good read if you were into the early

BUKOWSKI - BORN INTO THIS

TKcu^totiei / "Detected DuMaqAaH
/m going to try and be pretty objective on this review because I am a fan of Bukowski and his
writing and I don't want to give a fanboy review because that would mean nothing to the rest of
you who don't even have a clue of who Bukowski was or what he did. So Here goes. Bom Into
This' is a film which looks into the life of the late writer Charles Bukowski. The story of his life
is told through old footage of Bukowski through the years as well as supplemented with inter¬
views from people who either knew the writer or were impacted by him in one way or another.
Bukowski was known for being a 'dirty old man' and a lot of that came out in his writing. The
film sets out to show how people's interpretation of him is both true and fictionalized in many
_ cases. Ths film covers Bukowski's life from beginning to end and does a great job of illustrat¬
ing where he was coming from and what influenced him as a writer and a person. Bukowski comes across in the footage
as very witty and full of character, as well as full of some pretty classic stories. This film is definitely worth the view
if you're a fan of Bukowski, and probably even more worth the view for those who have never heard of him because
the documentary itself is well put together. Trust Me. -Pedro Bob

short interviews with all the members looking back on various aspects of the bands history. Plus
some anecdotes from their adoring fans splashed here & there. The extra stuff includes 6 music

trips to the “toilet” from all the alcohol made it a little difficult to see or remember. I was stoked
to get this 2-Disc DVD. This film gets into different aspects of the bands history and segues
between driving around in Watt’s van, him spieling and driving by different landmarks, live
footage and numerous interviews from different friends & accomplices. I’m glad this film was
done, but I think a lot was left out and a lot of the interviews started to sound the same. The extra
footage includes: 3 live gigs, 3 music videos, 19 deleted scenes & interviews and more. The
packaging looks cool (David Rees?) and the live footage is amazing. As a fan, how can you say

BLAH! #2
This is a well-rounded zine. It has recipes, comics, band interviews (The Alphabettes), info on local gigs & stuff
(Unation), funny stories & it even has a thing on battered women. A highlight of this mag would be the Mike Watt
interview. This zine packs a lot of bang for your buck. There is lots of good reading in here and Shanty’s kick ass
photo pages. This zine gets FIVE trips to the shitter. No price given, P.O. Box 1666, San Pedro, CA 90733,

FABULOUS #1
The Gay Issue. There are cool cartoons, nice pictures of Erik Estrada, Mr. T & various other dudes. An interview
with a Gay Czech & articles on Why Politicians suck, How to Impress Your Friends With Balloons & a comic on
How To Love A Gay Ass Father. I like the article on the Seven Rules For Shoplifting at Wal-Mart. Did you know
Bert & Ernie are gay and Cookie Monster doesn’t eat cookie’s anymore because he’s got a dick in his mouth? This
mag was pretty funny. It was good for THREE trips to the toilet. No price given, www.myspace.com/infamouszine
