Expectations Vs Reality 2020
Expectations Vs Reality 2020
We all stepped into 2020 with big plans, huge expectations. The dumbest thing I
ever bought was a 2020 planner and writing my resolutions in it, those that quite
frankly I would never stick to after the first week of the year.
I had many plans for the great 2020- I hoped to go on a Europe tour with my
family during summer vacations - have fun adventures in the streets of Europe,
have an unforgettable day at Disneyland, with Mickey Mouse and minions but
alas, the only adventure that 2020 had in store for me was tiptoeing from my
room to the kitchen with my sister to make snacks for a Saturday night movie
marathon. Although I did a lot of preparation work but my sister got all the
appreciation and she would walk around as though she had a Master Chef crown
on her head.
Well, the world had some expectations too. Decades ago, futurists made some
pretty bold predictions for the year of 2020- flying cars, robots, screen less
displays, flying trains and what not. Although we’ve come really far in our goals
to build a technologically advanced world, this year threw us all a curveball.
Starting with the Australian wildfires to the novel coronavirus, the Iran-US
conflict to India-China border conflict, still what topped the charts for me was
being scolded by my sister for silly and insignificant things daily.
I saw my mom sneaking out of the house daily in the evening for a walk to which
she has always been addicted and me requesting her to stay indoors, what a
strange turn of events. The world indeed turned upside down.
But let’s not be like 2020 and focus on the positive changes it brought to our
lives. Earlier, our method of unwinding from the stress of studies was to go to
cinemas, play video games and watch tv. But now, after staring at our screens
throughout the day, our stress relief is spending quality time with family. Indeed,
these testing times made us realise the importance of our families.
2020 in a twisted way did sort our priorities. My father who used to come home
at 8 pm was now around us 24 * 7 and to beat the boredom we played tambola
every night, watched movies cooped up in one bed, ate new delicacies cooked by
dad at midnight, as cravings had a strange time of occurrence.
Every few days I tried my jeans on, just to make sure they fit. Track pants made
me believe all is well in the kingdom but alas all the delicacies did start to show as
an extra tier on my waist. I soon realized that I need to practice social-distancing
from the refrigerator more than human beings. I got to spend a lot of time with
my sister who came back home happily from hostel to spend 2-3 days with us for
Holi but these 2-3 days extended to nine months much to her disappointment. I
tried my hands at cooking and drawing. I also read novels at bedtime every day.
I am truly grateful for the time I spent with my family and the extra time I got to
pursue my interests. To remove the tension that sometimes did grip my family , I
used to ask that Does anyone know if we can take showers yet or should we just
keep washing our hands only ? This usually eased off the tension in the air.
To conclude, even though many unexpected events transpired in 2020, still god
came in disguise of doctors, nurses, teachers and other corona warriors and to
read between the lines, this year was a time of community bonding, compassion
and empathy.
