in compatibility mode

Symptom
A variant table is being linked to a database table, which contains a material number (MATNR) field. When the material
number field is assigned to a characteristic in the variant table the following error interrupts the processing:
Error while mapping characteristic &1 with field &2. Length mismatch. (CUVT_CHECKS 028)

Reason and Prerequisites


The length of the material number field (MATNR) has been extended physically to 40 characters as of SAP S/4HANA Release
1511. However, there is a logical switch in the system called "Material Field Length Extension Compatibility Mode", which
logically limits the maximum allowed length of the material numbers to 18 characters.
If the compatibility mode is deactivated in a system, the maximum allowed length of character-type characteristics
gets extended to 70 characters in the characteristic master data transactions. (See SAP Note 2239194 for more
details) In case you receive the above mentioned error message, you have to increase the length of the characteristic you
wish to map to the material number to at least 40 characters.

If the compatibility mode is active in a system, the maximum length of character-type characteristics is limited to 30
characters in the characteristic master data transactions. Therefore, it is not possible to extend them to length 40 to
resolve the length mismatch error. After installing the corrections of this SAP Note the variant table field assignment will
consider the current state of the compatibility mode; and if it is active, the corresponding characteristic only has to be 18
characters long to be accepted.

Important remarks:
1. It is possible to define custom material number length limits in each system in transaction OMSL, however, the variant table field mapping
does not consider these settings. It only considers the compatibility mode setting: if it is active the characteristics for MATNR must be at
least 18 characters long, if it is not active the characteristics for MATNR must be at least 40 characters long.

2. The special handling for material numbers is triggered based on data element type, so the linked database field must use the "MATNR" data
element to be considered.

3. If you deactivate the compatibility mode after you have already linked material fields to variant table columns (characteristics) with less than
40 length, you will face dataloss when moving longer database contents into the corresponding variant table. If this occurs you have to extend
the characteristics' length to 40.

Solution
