Research team:
Anil Mohapatra (Team led), a senior scientist, Estuarine Biology Regional Centre (ERBC) of ZSI, Gopalpur,
Odisha; Scientists of Berhampur University, Berhampur (Odisha) and Ravenshaw University, Cuttack
(Odisha).
• In 2020, Rajesh Kumar Behera, a masters student of Berhampur University collected several
specimens by assuming the species as “Pisodonophis boro” (rice-paddy eel) and conducted the
length and weight relationship by using digital callipers and a measuring tape.
Examination:
i. After thorough examination, the specimens of “Pisodonophiskalinga” were found to be very distinct from
“Pisodonophisboro” in several aspects like teeth shape, vertebrae range, position of dorsal fin, among
others.
ii. DNA analysis of samples collected from different localities with various morphs confirmed the two
species were related. One was expected to be Pisodonophisboro, and the other was the newPisodonophis
