Arithmetic Sequences – MYP Criteria AC

1. The amount of money invested in a bank account at the time of creating the account was $ 1000.
Bank A added $ 100 to the account every year.
a. What was the rate of interest offered by Bank A?
b. What will the interest amount be in the second year and third year respectively?
c. Describe the type of interest offered by the bank (Simple Interest or Compound Interest)
d. Hence, determine whether the type of sequence formed by the subsequent amounts.
e. Determine the general formula for the amount.
f. Use the formula to determine the amount in the 12th year.

2. MYP Criteria BC
In this task, you will use logic to investigate the creation of shapes from circles. You will
be assessed using criterion B (Investigating patterns) and criterion C (Communication). Describe patterns
and find general rules in shapes created from fabric.
A fashion designer designed a fabric for her new clothing line. The design on the fabric is shown in the
following image. Each row consists of blue squares and yellow triangles.

a. Write down the missing values in the table.

b. Describe in words a pattern for T.

c. Write down a general rule for S in terms of n.
d. Verify your general rule for S

Each blue square is of side 1 mm and the area of one yellow triangle equals to half of the area of the blue
square. The area of a row (A) equals to the sum of areas of squares and triangles.
 Investigate the values in the table below to identify a relationship between the area of the row (A)
and the row number (n). In your answer, you should:
o complete the table.
o describe in words a pattern in the table for Area of the row A.
o write down a general rule of A in terms of n.
o test your general rule for A.
o verify your general rule for A.
o ensure that you communicate all your work properly.

Geometric Sequences – MYP Criteria BC

1. Consider the given figure:

a. What is incorrect about the given figure?

b. How can the figure be rectified?
c. If another diagram is to be created, how many squares will be there in that figure?
d. Consider another sequence: 4, 12, 36… What is the general formula of the sequence?
e. Hence determine the 6th term in the given sequence.

Interest – Simple and Compound MYP Criteria AC

1. Alex invested $ 200 in a bank A that paid interest on a yearly basis. The amount was checked at the
end of every year and these were the amounts that were reflected in the statement:
$ 200, $ 220, $ 240, $ 260…
Initial End of 1st year End of 2nd year End of 3rd year

a. What type of interest is this?

b. What will the amount at the end of the 4th year be?
c. What will the amount at the end of the 8th year be?
d. What is the rate of interest?

Matt invested $ 200 in another bank B that paid interest on a yearly basis. The amount was checked at the
end of every year and these were the amounts that were reflected in the statement:
$ 200, $ 220, $ 242,
st
Initial End of 1 year End of 2nd year

e. What type of interest is this?

f. What is the rate of interest?
g. What is the formula used to calculate interest?
h. What will the amount be at the end of the 4th year?
i. Determine the difference in amounts at the end of 8 years between bank A and B.
Numbers: Applying mathematics in real-life contexts. MYP Criteria DC
In this task, you will use relationships to apply mathematics within the global context of
scientific and technical innovation. This task focuses on criterion D (Applying mathematics in real-
life contexts) and criterion C (Communication).
Use representation of number in different forms and conversion of units to solve for time change due
to different measurements.
The satellites and space probes are so far away from Earth that time delays happen when radio
signals are sent to them. The radio signals travel with the speed of light which equals 3 × 10 8 metres/second.

In the following table some spacecraft with their time delays of Radio signal from Earth are given.

a. Write down the distances of each spacecraft from Earth.

When Jupiter is located farthest from the sun (aphelion) then it is at a distance of approximately 6.67 × 108
km and when located nearest to the sun (perihelion), it is at a distance of approximately 5.91 × 10 8 km.
Suppose you are measuring the schedule for the satellite at which it is going to be at the centre of Jupiter
based on the time at perihelion. Instead of perihelion you measured the distance of aphelion.

b. Discuss the time change that will occur due to this error. In your answer, you should:
 determine the time difference.
 describe if the time difference is positive or negative.
 justify your answer.
 ensure you communicate information clearly.
