Considerations For PPE Selection
The selection for PPE is based on several factors but most importantly
on a thorough risk assessment.
The type of PPE will vary based on the level of protection required.
• Routes- consider routes of infection and routes of exposure
• Provided protection- Consider what PPE is protecting
• Limitations- Consider the limitations for use of the types of PPE –fit,
availability, cost and storage.
• Donning and Doffing- Consider how and where the PPE should be
donned and doffed.
Donning and Doffing of PPE
• The terms donning and doffing are often used with PPE.

• Donning is the procedure of assembling PPE on the user.

• Doffing is the procedure for removal of PPE.

• The sequence/order for donning and doffing PPE is important

Sequence for Donning PPE

• Gown
• Safety shoes/boots
• Mask or respirator
• Goggles or face shield
• Gloves last
How to Don a Gown/Lab coat

Select appropriate type and size

Opening is in the back
Secure at neck and waist
If gown is too small, use two gowns
- Gown #1 ties in front
- Gown #2 ties in back
- If the opening is in front e.g lab
coat, you button down
How to Don a Mask
• Surgical masks with attached face shield protects
mouth, nose and eyes from droplets but does not
protect from aerosols.
• Place over nose, mouth and chin
• Fit flexible nose piece over nose bridge
• Secure on head with ties or elastic
• Adjust to fit
How to Don a Particulate Respirator
§ Select a fit tested respirator
§ Place over nose, mouth and chin
§ Fit flexible nose piece over nose bridge
§ Secure on head with elastic
§ Adjust to fit
§ Perform a fit check –
Inhale – respirator should collapse
Exhale – check for leakage around face
How to Don Eye and Face Protection

vPosition goggles over eyes

and secure to the head
using the ear pieces or

Care/Maintenance of PPE
• Look for damaged or broken components before using PPE and
replace or repair when needed
• Replace the PPE that has expired or reached useable lifespan.
• Clean reusable PPE after use and store in a clean area e.g in drawers,
resealable containers
• Keep hands away from face and PPE being worn.
Disposal of PPE
• Used/Contaminated PPE items could be a source of infection.

• Decontaminate PPE before disposal.
