Academic Year 2022-23

Grade: MYP 4

Unit 1: Numerical and Abstract Reasoning (Algebra)

Key concept: Form

Related concept(s): Model, Representation

Global context: Identities and relationships

Global Context Exploration:

Students will explore identities and relationships to improve their decision making through
modelling.

Statement of Inquiry: Decision-making can be improved by using a different form of model to

represent relationships.
Connection with SOI: Students will learn to write a system of linear inequalities to model the real-
world problem. This system will then be graphed to determine the solution set for the system of
inequalities to improve their decision making.

Topic: Linear Inequalities

Name: Shravya

Criteria C: Communication & Criteria D: Applying Mathematics in real life context

NOTE: Use Desmos to graph each of the following inequality and paste the screenshot.

1. You have at most $20 to spend at an arcade. Arcade games cost $0.75 each, and snacks cost
$2.25 each.
a) Write and graph an inequality that represents the numbers of games you can play and
snacks you can buy.

Arcade game = x
Snacks cost = y
x*0.75 + y*2.25 ≤ 20

b) Use desmos to represent feasible region which satisfies both inequality and past the
screen shot here.
c) Identify and interpret two solutions of the inequality.

(2,2)
(8,6)

d) Can the answers be represented in fractions or decimals of the given scenario? Give
reason

The answers cannot be represented in fractions or decimals or fractions, because I can’t

by .5 of a game or ½ of a snack. It has to be a whole number.
Hence, It cannot be represented in fractions or decimals.

2. Chris wants to order DVDs over the internet. Each DVD costs $15.99 and shipping for the
entire order is $9.99. Chris has no more than $100 to spend.

a) Write down an inequality that represents Chris' situation.

DVD Cost = x

Shipping = y

x + y ≤ 100

b) Calculate number of DVDs Chris can order without exceeding his $100 limit.

15.99 *5 + 9.99

= 80 + 9.99

= ≈ 90

3. Skate Land charges a $50 flat fee for birthday party rental and $5.50 per person. Joann has
no more than $100 to spend on the birthday party.

a) Write down an inequality to represents Joann's situation.

Rental costs = x

Per person = y
x + y ≤ 100

b) Comment how many people Joann can invite to her birthday party without exceeding her
limit of $100. Justify.

Joann can spend no more than $100 an $50 is the rental charges for the birthday party.
So, 100-50 = 50.

50/5.50 = 9.1

Hence, Joann can invite 9 people to the party without exceeding her limit of $100.

4. Joey goes to an electronics store to buy video games and CDs. He has $140 from his birthday
party, and he’s looking to buy video games for $35 each and CDs for $15 each.
a) Write down an inequality to describe the possible number of video games and CDs that
Joey can buy.

No. of video games = x

No. of CDs = y
x + y ≤ 140

b) If Joey buys 4 CDs, find the maximum number of video games he can buy? (Round your
answer into nearest integer).

Cost of each CD = 15
15*4 = 60
140-60 = 80
80/35 = 2.3
Nearest integer = 2

5. Neela is purchasing buffalo wings and hot dogs for a Super Bowl party at her house, and she
wants to spend under $73. A package of hot dogs costs $3, while a package of buffalo wings
costs $6.
a) Find the inequality in standard form that describes this situation. Use the given numbers
and the following variables.

 X= the number of packages of hot dogs

 Y= the number of packages of buffalo wings

x + y ≤ 73

6. Jenny is knitting baby items to sell at a craft fair. She has a total of 1,380 yards of yarn to
use for the items. A pair of booties uses 183 yards of yarn and a cap uses 200 yards apiece.
Find the inequality in standard form that describes this situation. Use the given numbers
and the following variables.

x= the number of pairs of booties Jenny can knit

y= the number of caps Jenny can knit.

x + y ≤ 1380

7. In a storage warehouse, each small carton weighs 40kg, and each large carton weighs 80kg.
If the company needs to move and it has a truck that has a capacity of 9000kg.
a) Estimate the number of small cartons which can be loaded on the truck if 35 large
cartons already been loaded.

Weight of large cartons = 80 kg

35 cartons have already been loaded, and the truck has a capacity of 9000 kg.
So, 35*80 = 2800
9000 – 2800 = 6200
6200/40 = 155
The number of small cartons that can be loaded on the truck if 35 large cartons
have already been loaded = 155

b) Write down an inequality representing this situation.

X = No. of cartons
40 + 80 * x ≤ 9000
