Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
During my pursuit of a Bachelor of Engineering in Aeronautical Engineering, I had the
invaluable opportunity to engage in a 4-week internship focused on product design and
development using the 3D Experience platform. This internship, undertaken during the 7th
semester of my undergraduate program, provided me with practical insights into the real-
world applications of the concepts and theories I have been learning in my academic journey.
The internship was conducted in Department of Aeronautical Engineering, a prominent
branch based in Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Bangalore, Karnataka, India. It
started on 17th July 2023 & ended on 18th August 2023.
Objective & Scope:
The primary objective of this internship was to immerse myself in the realm of product
design and development, gaining hands-on experience with modern engineering tools and
methodologies. I was tasked with contributing to the design and development process of
various mechanical parts like Geneva wheel, spanner, bearings etc., utilizing the cutting-edge
capabilities of the 3D Experience platform.
Significance of the Project:
The project assigned to me during this internship held significant relevance within the context
of NMIT’s mission and industry standing. This experience not only broadened my
understanding of engineering principles but also highlighted the importance of
interdisciplinary collaboration, communication, and problem-solving in achieving successful
outcomes in the field of aeronautical engineering.
Structure of the Report:
This internship report aims to chronicle my experiences, insights, and accomplishments
gained during the course of my 4-week internship. It will provide a comprehensive overview
of the project, the methodologies employed, the challenges encountered, and the lessons
learned throughout the journey. Furthermore, I will reflect upon the personal and professional
growth I underwent during this internship, highlighting how it aligns with my academic
pursuits and future aspirations.
1.1 Advantages of 3D experience over catia :

Activity summary
Throughout the course of my 4-week internship, each day presented new opportunities for
hands-on learning, skill development, and meaningful contributions to the project. The
following paragraphs provide a detailed account of the tasks and activities I engaged in on a
day-to-day basis: Week 1: 1.Orientation and Project Overview On the first day of my
internship, I underwent an orientation session where I was introduced to the company's work
culture, safety protocols, and team members. I received an overview of the project I would
be working on. 2.1 2-D Sketches First in order to get me used to complex sketches, my
mentors provided me 2D sketches so that I can learn how to analyze the sketches. In 3D
EXPERIENCE, a 2D sketch is a fundamental element used to create and define the basic
shapes and profiles that serve as the foundation for 3D models. These sketches are typically
created in the Sketcher workbench within 3D EXPERIENCE's Part Design or Sketcher
workbenches and can be used to generate various 3D features. Here are some key
characteristics and purposes of 2D sketches in 3D EXPERIENCE: 1. Planar Geometry: 2D
sketches are drawn on a single plane, such as the XY, YZ, or XZ plane. These sketches
represent flat, two-dimensional shapes. 2. Profiles: Sketches can be used to define profiles of
features like extrusions, revolves, sweeps, and lofts. The profiles outline the cross-sectional
shape of these 3D features. 3. Sketch Elements: Sketches are composed of various geometric
elements like lines, arcs, circles, rectangles, ellipses, and more. You create and manipulate
these elements to form the desired shape. 4. Complex Shapes: Multiple sketches can be
combined to create more complex shapes and profiles. You can link sketches together,
reference one sketch in another, or use sketch elements to build upon each other. Overall, 2D
sketches in 3D EXPERIENCE are essential building blocks for creating 3D models. They
enable you to define the geometry, relationships, and constraints necessary for accurate and
controlled 3D modeling in 3D EXPERIENCE's various workbenches like Part Design,
Assembly Design, and Generative Shape Design

1. Basic 3D Shapes: 3D EXPERIENCE allows users to create 3D models from basic geometric shapes
such as cubes, spheres, cylinders, and cones. These shapes can serve as the foundation for more
complex designs.
4. Assembly Modelling: 3D EXPERIENCE allows you to create complex assemblies of parts, where
individual components (parts) are assembled. You can define relationships and constraints between
parts, ensuring they fit and move as intended.
6. Collaboration and Data Management: 3D EXPERIENCE offers collaborative features and data
management tools to facilitate teamwork, version control, and data sharing among design teams.

Chapter 4:
Assembly designs
In the third week, I transitioned to the design and modeling phase. Using the 3D Experience, I
meticulously translated the selected design concepts into detailed 3D models. I was tasked with 6
models & I made use of GD & T symbols during drafting. Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
(GD&T) is a system used in engineering and manufacturing to precisely define and communicate the
dimensional and geometrical requirements of a product. It employs a set of symbols, rules, and practices
to convey design intent, tolerances, and relationships between features on technical drawings. GD&T
provides a standardized language for communicating complex design specifications, ensuring that all
stakeholders interpret the information consistently and accurately.
Assembly modelling in 3D EXPERIENCE refers to the process of creating and managing complex
assemblies of parts within the 3D EXPERIENCE software platform. 3D EXPERIENCE is a powerful
Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software used in various industries, including aerospace, automotive,
manufacturing, and product design, and it offers extensive capabilities for creating, visualizing, and
20
analyzing assemblies of components. Here's an overview of assembly modeling in 3D EXPERIENCE:
21
1. Components and Parts: In assembly modeling, the building blocks are individual components or
parts. Each part represents a distinct object or piece within the assembly, such as a bolt, gear, housing,
or any other element.
3. Constraints and Relationships: Assembly modelling involves defining relationships and constraints
between parts to control their relative positions and movements. Common constraints include mate,
flush, coincident, concentric, and more. These constraints ensure that parts fit together accurately and
behave as expected.
4. Interference Detection: 3D EXPERIENCE offers tools for detecting interferences or clashes between
components in an assembly. This is crucial for ensuring that parts do not interfere with each other
physically, which could lead to manufacturing or operational issues.
5. Visualization and Rendering: You can create realistic visualizations and renderings of assemblies to
communicate design concepts effectively. This is useful for presentations and design reviews. 6. Design
Validation: 3D EXPERIENCE integrates with analysis and simulation tools, allowing you to perform
structural, thermal, and other analyses on assemblies to verify their performance and behavior Assembly
modelling in 3D EXPERIENCE is crucial for designing complex products and systems that consist of
multiple components. It enables engineers and designers to create, analyze, and document the
interactions between these components, ensuring that the final product functions as intended and can be
manufactured efficiently.

Learning Opportunities:
4. Iterative Design Process: The iterative design process exposed me to the concept of
continuous improvement. I realized that design is an evolving process, and each iteration
brings valuable insights for refinement.
