CHEM 352 PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY II 18/3/2022

PROBLEM SET III

1- (Atkins Ed.7 4.4b) Calculate the change in entropy when 50kJ of energy is transferred
reversibly and isothermally as heat to a large block of copper at 0oC and 70 oC.

2- (Atkins Ed.7 4.9b) Calculate the increase in entropy when 3.50 mol of a monatomic
perfect gas with Cp,m=5R/2 is heated from 250 K to 700 K and simultaneously expanded
from 20.0L to 60.0L.

3- (Atkins Ed.7 4.15b) Calculate H and Stot when two iron blocks, each of mass 1.00kg,
one at 200 oC and the other at 25 oC, are placed in contact in an isolated container. The
specific heat capacity of iron is 0.449 J.K-1g-1 and may be assumed constant over the
temperature range involved.

4- (Atkins Ed.7 4.16b) Consider a system consisting of 1.5mol CO2(g) initially at 25 oC and 10 atm
and confined to a cylinder of cross-section 10.0cm2. It is allowed to expand adiabatically
against an external pressure of 1.0 atom until the piston has moved through 20cm.
Assume that CO2 may be considered as a perfect gas with Cv,m= 28.8 JK-1 mol-1 and
calculate q, w, U, T and S.

5- (Atkins Ed.7 4.17b) The enthalpy of vaporization of methanol is 35.27 kJ mol-1 at its normal boling
point of 64.1 oC. Calculate a) the entropy of vaporization of chloroform at this temperature b)
the entropy change of the surroundings.

6- (Atkins Ed.7 4.18b) Calculate the standard reaction entropy at 298 K of

a) Zn(s) + Cu2+(aq) → Zn2+ (aq) + Cu(s)
b) C12H22O11 (s) + 12O2(g) → 12CO2 + 11H2O

7- Combine the reaction entropies calculated in Question 6 with the reaction enthalpies and
calculate the standard reaction Gibbs energies at 298 K.

8- (Atkins Ed.7 4.2) The heat capacity of chloroform in the range 240 K to 330 K is given by
Cp,m/(J.K-1mol-1) = 91.47 + 7.5 x 10-2 (T/K).
In a particular experiment, 1.00 mol chloroform is heated from 273 K to 300 K. Calculate the
change in molar entropy of the sample.

9- (Atkins Ed. 7 4.5) A carnot cycle uses 1.00 mol of a monatomic perfect gas as the working
substance from an initial state of 10.0 atm and 600 K. It expands isothermally to a pressure of
1.00 atm (step 1) and then adiabatically to a temperature of 300 K (step 2). This expansion is
followed by an isothermal compression (step 3), and then an adiabatic compression (step 4) back
to initial state. Determine the values of q, w, DU, DH, DS, DStot for each stage of the cycle and
for the cycle as a whole.
