General information for handling hardware components
This section describes precautions you must take and general procedures you must follow when
removing, installing, or storing field-replaceable units (FRUs) or other hardware components. The
procedures in this section apply to handling components during hardware upgrades or FRU replacement.
You add or replace most hardware while the cabinet is powered up. To maintain proper airflow for cooling
and to ensure EMI compliance, ensure that all front bezels, filler panels, and filler modules are in place
after the replacement/upgrade is complete.

Removing, installing, or storing FRUs

Follow these precautions to protect FRUs:
• Do not remove a bad FRU from the cabinet until you have the replacement available.
• Do not remove the replacement FRU from its antistatic bag and/or container until you are ready to
install it. After installing the FRU, save the bag/container in case you need to return the FRU later.
• Handle the replacement FRU gently, and do not use excessive force to remove or install a FRU.

Avoiding damage from electrostatic discharge

Handling a hardware component incorrectly can damage sensitive electronic circuits by discharging static
electricity that has accumulated on your body. Follow these procedures to prevent damage to the
equipment:
• If the air in the work area is very dry, operate a humidifier in the work area.
• Provide enough room to work on the equipment. Clear the work site of any unnecessary materials or
materials that naturally build up an electrostatic charge, such as foam packaging, foam cups, and
cellophane wrappers.
• Do not remove a FRU from its antistatic packaging until you are ready to install it.
• Gather the ESD (electrostatic discharge) kit and all other materials you will need before you service a
component. Once servicing begins, avoid moving away from the work site, to avoid building up an
electrostatic charge.
• Use the ESD kit when handling any hardware component. (If an emergency arises and no ESD kit is
available, follow the steps in “Emergency procedure when an ESD kit is not available.”)
• Attach the clip of an ESD wristband to any bare (unpainted) metal on the cabinet enclosure, and fasten
the strap around your wrist, with the metal button against your skin.

Emergency procedure when an ESD kit is not available

In an emergency when an ESD kit is not available, follow these steps to reduce the possibility of ESD by
ensuring that your body and the subassembly are at the same electrostatic potential:

IMPORTANT: Follow these steps only in an emergency. They are not a substitute for using an ESD kit.

• Before you touch a hardware component, touch a bare (unpainted) metal surface of the enclosure.
• Before you remove a FRU from its antistatic bag, place one hand firmly on a bare metal surface of the
enclosure, and at the same time, pick up the FRU while it is still sealed in the antistatic bag.
• When you remove the FRU from the antistatic bag, do not touch any electronic components and
circuits on it, and do not move around the room or contact other surfaces or people until you have

Dell Technologies Confidential Information- for internal use only version: 2.9.0.87

installed the FRU. If you must move around the room or touch other surfaces, return the FRU to the
antistatic bag before doing so.

Replacement procedure
Task 1: Perform preliminary steps
Note: You can perform the procedure described in this document only on a VPLEX cluster that has been
configured for operation (by running the EZ-Setup utility). The procedure does not work on a new cluster
that has not yet been configured.
Note: This task is from a source file that is common to several procedures. Some items are not applicable
to all procedures.

Before starting any replacement procedure:

1. [ ] Review the VPLEX best practices white papers on EMC Support Online, and verify that the
VPLEX cluster is configured for high availability.

CAUTION: A lack of high availability can cause data unavailability when a component is removed.

2. [ ] Confirm that your laptop has the following software:

• WinSCP or a similar tool, in case you will need to copy files to the VPLEX management server.
• PuTTY version 0.60 or later, for SSH connections to the VPLEX management server. (You can
download PuTTY from www.putty.org.)
• VNC client (optional), if you want to use the management server’s graphical desktop.
If you want to use the VPLEX GUI: A web browser, and Flash Player 10.0.0 or higher.
• If you will need to connect directly to a VPLEX Fibre Channel switch: HyperTerminal or similar
terminal emulator.
3. [ ] Confirm that any cables connected to the component you are replacing are labeled in a way that
clearly identifies them for correct connection to the replacement component. Label any cables that
are not already adequately labeled.

Dell Technologies Confidential Information- for internal use only version: 2.9.0.87

4. [ ] Confirm that you have all VPLEX login usernames and passwords. The EMC VPLEX Security
Configuration Guide shows the default passwords; however, a customer administrator might have
changed some of them. Verify any changes, and ensure either that you know any changed
passwords or that someone who does know them will be available when you need them.
5. [ ] Confirm that you have identifying information for the component you are replacing. This
information should be available from the EMC Support Center or a Call Home message.
Typical identifying information you should note includes the following, where applicable:
• Serial number
• VPLEX cabinet TLA (top-level assembly number)
• Cluster ID
• Cluster IP Seed
• Enclosure ID (engine number)
Engines are numbered up from the bottom, starting with 1.
• Director name:

VPLEX VS1 hardware

director-<Cluster_IP_Seed>-<Enclosure_ID>-B

director-<Cluster_IP_Seed>-<Enclosure_ID>-A

VPLEX VS2 hardware

director-<Cluster_IP_Seed>-<Enclosure_ID>-A director-<Cluster_IP_Seed>-<Enclosure_ID>-B
dirname

6. [ ] Confirm that you have the following equipment:

• The correct replacement component. Place the component close to the VPLEX cabinet that
contains the component you are replacing.
• Medium flat-blade screwdriver.
• #2 Phillips screwdriver.
• Cable holder kit (106-562-056), useful if you need to disconnect the I/O cables from a director or
I/O module. The kit shipped with the hardware in the Open First box, and should have been placed
into the pouch on the inside of the rear cabinet door.
Xxxlaptop_VS2-sles11_6.0_later
7. [ ] Confirm that your laptop has a USB drive of at least 2 GB. _vs2
8. [ ] Copy the VPlex-5.5.1.02.00.01-management-server-package.tar and the VPlex-5.5.1.02.00.01-
management-server.iso files for the new GeoSynchrony release:
FROM: The downloads area of EMC Support Online
TO: Your laptop
9. [ ] Copy VPlex-required-6.x-version-management-server-package.tar:
FROM: the downloads area of EMC Support Online
TO: Your laptop
