Week 5-6
Technical Terms
OHS – OHS includes the laws, standards, and programs that are aimed at
making the workplace better for workers, along with co-workers, family
members, customers, and other stakeholders.
Workplace Hazards - refers to a situation within the workplace that has the
potential to cause injury or adverse health effects for people and damage to
the equipment.
LCD – LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is a type of flat panel display which uses
liquid crystals in its primary form of operation.
Motherboard - It is a sheet of plastic that holds all the circuitry to connect the
various components of a computer system.
Floppy Disk - A floppy disk or floppy diskette is a type of disk storage composed
of a thin and flexible disk of a magnetic storage medium in a square or
nearly square plastic enclosure lined with a fabric that removes dust
particles from the spinning disk. Floppy disks are read from and written to
by a floppy disk drive (FDD).
CD -ROM Drives - is a pre- pressed optical compact disc that contains data.
Computers can read but not write to or erase—CD-ROMs, it is a type of read-
only memory.
DVD drive-In computing, an optical disc drive (ODD) is a disc drive that
uses laser light or electromagnetic waves within or near the visible light
spectrum as part of the process of reading or writing data to or from optical
discs.
Flash Drive - A USB flash drive is a data storage device that includes flash
memory with an integrated USB interface. It is typically removable,
rewritable and much smaller than an optical disc.
Cloud Storage - Cloud storage is a cloud computing model that stores data on
the Internet through a cloud computing provider who manages and operates
data storage as a service. ... This gives you agility, global scale and
durability, with “anytime, anywhere” data access.
Computer Network - two or more computers that are connected with one
another for the purpose of communicating data electronically.
BIOS (Basic Input Output System) - The BIOS provides instructions for loading
basic computer hardware. This also requires a test called a POST (Power-On
Self-Test) to verify whether the device meets the needs of booting correctly.
What Is It:
INSTALL OPERATING SYSTEM AND DRIVERS
FOR PERIPHERALS/ DEVICES
Operating System
(1) User-interface,
(2) Carrying out commands of the user and the application programs,
(3) Supervising installation and running of other programs and hardware,
(4) Controlling the input-output functions,
(5) Allocating system resources such as memory, processor time, disk space,
and peripheral devices to regulate the flow of work within the computer,
(6) Handling file and directory management, and
(7) Providing file-sharing and networking functions.
Windows
MAC OS X
Linux
PREPARE INSTALLER
Most software programs require that you first install them on your
computer before using them. For example, if you buy Microsoft
Office, you need to install it on your computer before you can
run any of the included programs such as Word or Excel. You
can install software from a CD or DVD, an external hard drive,
or from a networked computer. You can also install a program
or software update from a file downloaded from the Internet.
Installing a software program writes the necessary data for
running the program on your hard drive. Often the installer program
will decompress the data included with the installer immediately
before writing the information to your hard drive. Software updates,
which are typically downloaded from the Internet, work the same
way. When you run the update, the installer file decompresses the
data and then updates the correct program or operating system.
Automatic Installation
Custom Installation
A portable device is any device that can easily be carried. It is a small form
factor of a computing device that is designed to be held and used in the
hands. Portable devices are becoming an increasingly important part of
personal computing as the capabilities of devices like laptops, tablets and
smart phones continue to improve.
Network boot Windows involves two machines: boot server and boot client.
The boot client is a computer you are trying to boot up over network, while
the boot server is the machine that serves over the network the files which
the client needs. Network boot program allows to remote boot a computer
over an IP network without access to a hard disk. It is therefore ideally
suited for disk less or thin clients.
Peripherals/Devices
Printer
In computers, a printer is a device that accepts text and graphic output from
a computer and transfers the information to paper, usually to standard size
sheets of paper.
Scanner
A scanner is a device that captures images from photographic prints, posters,
magazine pages, and similar sources for computer editing and display.
Scanners come in hand-held, feed-in, and flatbed types and for scanning
black-and-white only, or color.
Interface Cards
Interface card is an electronic device that connects a computer to a computer
network, usually a LAN. It is considered a piece of computer hardware.
TV Tuner Card
A TV tuner card is a kind of television tuner that allows television signals to
be received by a computer. Most TV tuners also function as video capture
cards, allowing them to record television programs onto a hard disk much
like the digital video recorder (DVR) does.
Video Card
A video card is used to process images so they can be displayed on your
monitor. A good video card can make a big difference in the quality of your
graphics, so this is particularly important if you play games or work with
photography and video.
Sound Card
Alternatively referred to as an audio output device, sound board, or audio
card. A sound card is an expansion card or IC for producing sound on a
computer that can be heard through speakers or headphones.
