What I Need to Know -

1. Install Operating System
2. Install Computer Drivers
3. Install Computer Peripherals

What Is It:
INSTALL OPERATING SYSTEM AND DRIVERS
FOR PERIPHERALS/ DEVICES

The operating system is the most important program that runs on a

computer. Every general purpose computer must have an operating system
to run other programs and applications.Operating systems perform basic
tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending
output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the
disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers.
Peripheral devices are devices that are not built into the PC. They can
include monitors, printers, scanners, network hubs, digital cameras, and
external modems and transceivers (such as DSL or cable modems)

Operating System

Operating System is as master control program that automatically runs first

when a computer
is switched on, and remains in the background until the computer is turned
off. It commonly comes pre-installed (on the boot section of the computer’s
main hard disk) and is usually the most complex and largest program to be
used by the computer. A computer user is typically more affected by the
capabilities and whims of the OS than by those of the hardware.
Main services provided by an OS include

(1) User-interface,
(2) Carrying out commands of the user and the application programs,
(3) Supervising installation and running of other programs and hardware,
(4) Controlling the input-output functions,
(5) Allocating system resources such as memory, processor time, disk space,
and peripheral devices to regulate the flow of work within the computer,
(6) Handling file and directory management, and
(7) Providing file-sharing and networking functions.

Windows

Windows OS, computer operating system (OS) developed by Microsoft

Corporation to run personal computers (PCs). Featuring the first graphical
user interface (GUI) for IBM-compatible PCs, the Windows OS soon
dominated the PC market. Approximately 90 percent of PCs run some
version of Windows.

MAC OS X

Mac OS X is a development platform that supports multiple development

technologies including UNIX, Java, the proprietary Cocoa and Carbon
runtime environments, and a host of open source, Web, scripting, database
and development technologies.

Linux

Linux is a Unix-like operating system that was designed to provide personal

computer users a free or very low-cost operating system comparable to
traditional and usually more expensive Unix systems. Linux has a reputation
as a very efficient and fast performing system.

Established Installation Procedures

A software provided by the meter manufacturer is required to be installed in

the PC where SEM data is to be dumped. In case of SEMs supplied by SML,
the name of the software is SMARTGRID in Windows version and FBM_SYS
in DOS version. In case of SEMs supplied by L&T the software is called
VINCOM in Windows version and LUCID in DOS version. The DOS version of
these programs can be installed by simply copying the concerned folders.
The programs may be run by double clicking on the respective files viz.
FBM_SYS.EXE or LUCID.EXE or executing tem from DOS prompt.

Basic-Input-Output-System (BIOS) Configuration

BIOS (basic input/output system) is the program a personal computer’s
microprocessor uses to get the computer system started after you turn it on.
It also manages data flow between the computer’s operating system and
attached devices such as the hard disk, video adapter, keyboard, mouse and
printer. BIOS is an integral part of your computer and comes with it when
you bring it home. (In contrast, the operating system can either be pre-
installed by the manufacturer or vendor or installed by the user.) BIOS is a
program that is made accessible to the microprocessor on an erasable
programmable read-only memory (EPROM) chip. When you turn on your
computer, the microprocessor passes control to the BIOS program, which is
always located at the same place on EPROM.

PREPARE INSTALLER

Most software programs require that you first install them on your
computer before using them. For example, if you buy Microsoft
Office, you need to install it on your computer before you can
run any of the included programs such as Word or Excel. You
can install software from a CD or DVD, an external hard drive,
or from a networked computer. You can also install a program
or software update from a file downloaded from the Internet.
Installing a software program writes the necessary data for
running the program on your hard drive. Often the installer program
will decompress the data included with the installer immediately
before writing the information to your hard drive. Software updates,
which are typically downloaded from the Internet, work the same
way. When you run the update, the installer file decompresses the
data and then updates the correct program or operating system.

Automatic Installation

Software allows you to install all necessary software automatically. Its

functioning comes down to saving the operations of the user and
reproducing all operations automatically later. Besides, you can create a
universal disk for installing software from any media in the batch mode.

Custom Installation

A Custom Installer is defined as a class that implements the

Composer\Installer\Installer Interface and is usually distributed in a
Composer Plugin.

A basic Installer Plugin would thus compose of three files:

• The package file: composer.json

• The Plugin class, e.g.: My\Project\Composer\Plugin.php, containing a
class that implements Composer\Plugin\ Plugin Interface.
• The Installer class, e.g.: My\Project\Composer\Installer.php, containing a
class that implements Composer\Installer\Installer Interface.

Installation from Optical Devices

With streaming services increasingly popular delivery mechanisms for video
and music and so many software packages now downloadable or installable
by USB key, an optical drive is no longer the computing necessity it once was.
But it is still nice to have one, whether it is for ripping music files or taking
full advantage of a Netflix subscription. And if you are building a computer
from scratch, optical drives are still practically necessities, with driver
software and other key utilities still shipping first and foremost on discs.

Installation from Portable Devices

A portable device is any device that can easily be carried. It is a small form
factor of a computing device that is designed to be held and used in the
hands. Portable devices are becoming an increasingly important part of
personal computing as the capabilities of devices like laptops, tablets and
smart phones continue to improve.

Installation via Network

Network boot Windows involves two machines: boot server and boot client.
The boot client is a computer you are trying to boot up over network, while
the boot server is the machine that serves over the network the files which
the client needs. Network boot program allows to remote boot a computer
over an IP network without access to a hard disk. It is therefore ideally
suited for disk less or thin clients.

Peripherals/Devices

Printer
In computers, a printer is a device that accepts text and graphic output from
a computer and transfers the information to paper, usually to standard size
sheets of paper.

Scanner
A scanner is a device that captures images from photographic prints, posters,
magazine pages, and similar sources for computer editing and display.
Scanners come in hand-held, feed-in, and flatbed types and for scanning
black-and-white only, or color.

Interface Cards
Interface card is an electronic device that connects a computer to a computer
network, usually a LAN. It is considered a piece of computer hardware.

TV Tuner Card
A TV tuner card is a kind of television tuner that allows television signals to
be received by a computer. Most TV tuners also function as video capture
cards, allowing them to record television programs onto a hard disk much
like the digital video recorder (DVR) does.

Video Card
A video card is used to process images so they can be displayed on your
monitor. A good video card can make a big difference in the quality of your
graphics, so this is particularly important if you play games or work with
photography and video.

Sound Card
Alternatively referred to as an audio output device, sound board, or audio
card. A sound card is an expansion card or IC for producing sound on a
computer that can be heard through speakers or headphones.
