Wireless vs.
Wired
Well Analyzers
Application and Hardware Comparison
The Wireless Well Analyzer* is a state of the art system for fluid level and
dynamometer data acquisition and analysis. It consists of a wireless Base Station
directly connected to the USB port of a laptop computer (Windows XP and later),
that communicates with multiple wireless sensors for fluid level and
dynamometer acquisition using the newly developed TAM (Total Asset
Monitoring) software.
The Wired Well Analyzer and the TWM (Total Well Management) software have
become the most used system for analysis of wells operated with artificial lift or
flowing naturally. This hardware and software combination provides a reliable
and flexible system that can be applied to optimization of the great majority of
wells.
Echometer Company is committed to the continued development of the Wireless
Well Analyzer and to continued marketing and support of the Wired Well
Analyzer systems. Following is a summary and comparison table showing the
type of measurements that are provided by each system at this time or will be
available in the near future.

Wireless Echometer Hardware
The Wireless Echometer Base Station, with GPS well site
location, is connected to the USB port of the computer and
communicates with all the Wireless sensors that at this
time include:
Wireless Remote Fire Gas Gun (WRFG)
Wireless Polished Rod Transducer (WPRT)
Wireless Horse Shoe Transducer (WHT)
Wireless Pressure Sensor (WPT)
The station allows simultaneous acquisition of liquid level, dynamometer and
pressure records as controlled by the user via the TAM software either at the
laptop or at the sensor location.
The Wireless Sensors have been designed with state of
the art microchips to achieve low noise, high accuracy
and resolution with minimum power usage for long life of
the rechargeable batteries. Typical range of over 450 ft
has been achieved in most installations.
Wireless sensor set up and installation is done efficiently by using the control
buttons and LED displays, mounted on the sensor’s body, which are used to
power up, adjust, and calibrate the sensors when
installed at the wellhead without having to view the
computer screen.

Advantages of the Wireless Well Analyzer System
Elimination of cables and connectors improves the reliability of the hardware and
data while speeding up the set-up-tear-down process with increased safety for
the operator.
Battery powered wireless sensors for fluid level, pressure and dynamometer data
acquisition are easily deployed and quickly installed on the well.
The laptop manager software (TAM) automatically recognizes and commissions
the sensors.
Powering up a sensor is detected automatically by the software so that the user
can install the sensor, perform calibration and initiate acquisition directly at the
sensor using its membrane switches with no need to interact with the software at
the computer.
Minimal down time required for installation of sensors.
Simultaneous acquisition of fluid level, dynamometer, pressure and power data is
accomplished without cable switching or user intervention.
Workflow is streamlined and acquisition of valve tests is seamless.
System provides real time analysis and visualization of the performance of the
pump, rods and surface unit.
Scheduling of un-attended fluid level and dynamometer measurements allows
continuous monitoring of well performance.
The user interface presents a smart instrument rather than a complex
application.
The user sees at a glance, how the well and pump are operating.
Acquired data, wellbore description and pumping system characteristics are
saved as a historical data base creating a continuum of the well's information and
performance.
Easy to identify and retrieve past records for direct comparison and detailed
analysis.
Accurate description of wellbore construction, well completion, lift system, fluid
properties, production records and performance.
Well Monitoring Workflow using Wireless Well Analyzer
For most common well conditions the workflow for wireless well monitoring is
outlined as follows:
• Well information is automatically selected from database by sensing the
GPS location of the user.
• Stop pumping unit for wireless polished rod sensor installation
• Initiate acquisition of dynamometer record
• Start pumping unit
• Attach Wireless Acoustic sensor to the wellhead and charge pressure
chamber.
• Acquire fluid level record and observe fluid level
• Monitor and analyze pump dynamometer record in real time to determine
pump operation
• Perform valve tests and analyze
• Acquire second fluid level record for verification
• Remove Acoustic sensor from wellhead
• Stop unit and disconnect dynamometer sensor
• Restart unit
• Clean sensors and store
The workflow detailed above has been completed, with no stress, in less than 18
minutes by a single new user of the wireless system without assistance from
other field personnel.
TAM (Total Asset Monitor) is the next generation of Echometer data acquisition
and analysis software used with combinations of wireless and wired fluid level
and dynamometer equipment. The objective of the new software is to show to
the user, at a glance, how the well and pump are operating. This is accomplished
by acquiring the surface load and position data while computing “on the fly” the
plunger displacement and load, determining the pressure in the pump barrel and
calculating the percentage of gas and liquid as a function of plunger travel and
loads. The results are presented on the laptop screen in a graphical format as
shown below. Simultaneous recording of fluid level allows visualization of the
fluid level and fluid distribution in the wellbore that are presented at the left of the
screen. This complements the visualization of the pump operation and shows to
the user the interrelation between the pump operation and the fluids and
pressures that exist in the well and at the pump intake thus providing complete
monitoring of the artificial lift system.
Interaction with the software is reduced to a minimum and most results are
obtained “at a glance” with “one click,” but in those cases where the complexity of
the data requires detailed investigation the user has access to advanced menus
and tools to facilitate the analysis.

is difficult to clearly identify the liquid level echo or collar reflections.
Application of TAM with the Wired Well Analyzer
The TAM program can be downloaded free of charge from the Echometer
website and installed on any computer running Windows, XP/,Vista/ 7.
Existing well information and data acquired with the Echometer Wired Well
Analyzer can be imported automatically into TAM from TWM files. The user then
can benefit from all the new features of the TAM software for the analysis of the
acoustic and dynamometer records and the generation of reports.
Acquisition of new records with a Wired Well Analyzer using the TAM software is
also an option but this requires either licensing the specific Well Analyzer
electronics or connecting a wireless base station to a USB port of the laptop that
drives the Well Analyzer (2 USB ports required).
