Pinoy Illustrators Who Have Put Local Creativity

on the Comic Book Map

Tony DeZuniga. He is one of the first Filipinos in the comic book industry, having
worked with Marvel and DC comics in the early 70s. DeZuniga was responsible for
co-creating DC characters, Jonah Hex and Black Orchid—the former becoming a
movie in 2010. After his stint with comic book illustration, De Zuniga designed video
games for Sega and rendered illustrations for major publishing houses like McGraw
Hill and Scholastic. He passed away in 2013.

Leinil Yu. Yu gained global recognition after his mentor Whilce Portacio submitted
a sample of his works to Marvel. Since then, Yu has worked on the stories of Marvel
characters Wolverine and Fantastic Four, and on comic book series Secret
Invasion and Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk. Aside from his comic book works, Yu was
part of a Guinness World Record attempt dating April 9, 2011 for the Fastest
Production of a Comic Book and Most Contributors to a Comic Book. A
proud Pinoy moment indeed!

Carlo Pagulayan. This Industrial Engineering graduate, who calls

himself Guisadong Gulay in his DeviantArt profile, was involved in the development
of Marvel’s Planet Hulk storyline. One reason to look forward to Thor: Ragnarok in
July? Part of the movie's plot is based on Planet Hulk!

lOMoARcPSD|44536115

Gerry Alangulian. He launched a thousand memes when he made a video of him

smiling naughtily and repetitively. But prior to being a viral star, Alanguilan earned
his fame through his self-published comic book Elmer. The book is a story about
chickens gaining human intelligence, which reminds us of George
Orwell's 1984. Elmer was praised by many, including Sandman author Neil Gaiman,
and won the French ACBD Prix Asie (Asia Prize for Criticism) Award in 2011.

Stephen Segovia. Stephen considers his work as the best job in the world and it
shows. An illustrator since he was 16, he has shown uncanny flexibility throughout
his career to draw a wide variety of characters. From a talking dog during his Funny
Komiks days to Superman for DC Comics, this illustrating genius has done it all.

Aren’t they inspiring? So buckle your seatbelt, and let's get it on in the world of
Illustrators.

What’s New

Illustration in the Philippines

Filipinos way back in prehistoric times were known as visual artists. Prehistoric cave
drawings were discovered in a number of sites in the Philippines. A notable set is
the Angono Petroglyphs, found in a shallow rock shelter. It measures 63 meters wide,
8 meters deep, and a maximum height of 5 meters. These were formed in volcanic
soil during the Quaternary period. There are 127 drawings in forms of animate and
static figures with circular or dome-like heads on top of a 'V' shaped torso. The
drawings are distributed on a horizontal plane on a rock wall area measuring 25
meters by 3 meters. Only 51 of the total 127 drawings are distinct. Due to the
complexity and plurality of the drawings, it is suggested that the drawings were not
only created by a single individual. The figures engraved on the rock wall were
probably carved during the late Neolithic, or before 2000 BC. These inscriptions
clearly show stylized human figures, frogs, and lizards, along with other designs that
may have depicted other interesting figures. Erosion may have caused some to
become indistinguishable. The engravings are mostly symbolic representations and
are associated with healing and sympathetic magic.

Today, Filipinos have adopted various types of visual arts which are renowned not
only locally, but internationally as well. Common visual arts practiced today are:
1. Painting
2. Calligraphy
3. Sculpture
4. Pottery
5. Media / Digital Art

What is It

What is Illustration?
(From VisualArtsCork.com)

An illustration is a drawing, painting or printed work of art which explains, clarifies,

illuminates, visually represents, or merely decorates a written text, which may be of
a literary or commercial nature.

Illustration can be both Digital and Traditional. While you are preparing yourself to
work on the digital field, you must know also the basics of the traditional illustration
and equip yourself with these so that migrating to the digital one will not be hard for
you. Remember, in everything, we have to start from the basics. Master the basics
and you will know the complex ones.

Traditional illustration is a type of drawing, painting or printed work of art which

explains, clarifies, illuminates, visually represents, or merely decorates a written text,
which may be of a literary or commercial nature using traditional mediums such as
wood, paint, metal, pencil, pen and ink and others.

Types of Traditional Illustration:

• Woodcutting – It is an ancient technique which you can see in some of the
world’s oldest surviving manuscripts. It was popular during the Middle Ages
and became the illustration type of choice after the invention of the printing
press.
• Metal Etching – The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching
needle where he or she wants a line to appear in the finished piece, so exposing
the bare metal.
• Pencil Illustration – It is one of the most popular types of illustration is the pencil
one. It is a rich material, which allows you to create soft shadows and
transitions, as well as to create sharp, accurate lines. Sometimes, illustrators
choose to keep the pencil sketch very loose and to draft with a pencil – later,
they finish off the illustration with another material.
• Charcoal Illustration – Charcoal’s ability to make good blends lets the artist
create a range of textures, representing materials and shadows, people, objects,
and the natural world. Artists often use fingers and tissues to blend the soft
material, smudge, and create smooth and soft shadows.
• Lithography – It comes from the Greek word for stone. Originally, the technique
used an image drawn with oil, fat, or wax onto the surface of a smooth, level
lithographic limestone plate.
• Watercolor Illustration – This is commonly used in cookbooks, feminine fashion,
children’s books because it’s soft, airy, and with lots of depth.
• Gouache Illustration – This uses poster paints to create the illustration.

Downloaded by Evan Dungog ([email protected])

lOMoARcPSD|44536115

• Acrylics Illustration – This is the most preferred technique for beginners since it
uses acrylics which are quick drying and you can achieve similar effects of paint
and watercolors.
• Collage Illustration – The artwork is made from an assemblage of different forms,
often from different materials, to form a new whole.
• Pen-and-Ink Illustration – This type of illustration uses mainly an ink to create
strong areas of contrast.

Digital illustration or computer illustration is the use of digital tools to produce

images under the direct manipulation of the artist, usually through a pointing device
such as a tablet or a mouse. It is distinguished from computer-generated art, which
is produced by a computer using mathematical models created by the artist. It is
also distinct from digital manipulation of photographs; in that, it is an original
construction "from scratch". (Photographic elements may be incorporated into such
works, but they are not necessarily the primary basis.)

Types of Digital Illustration:

1. Freehand Digital Illustration – These illustrations are made using freehand
drawing with the aid of digital tablet and a stylus were most of these illustrations
are in a raster format and they can be scaled up and printed only to certain sizes
before they lose quality.

2. Vector Graphics – It is a popular web illustration in which you can easily recognize
the vector by its clear outlines, shapes, and definition.

Styles in Digital Illustration:

• Concept Art – These types of illustration include Fantasy illustrations,
illustrations for Gaming, Animation and One-Pager Fine Illustrations.
• Children’s Book Illustration – Depending on the story, target age group and
more, this type of illustration can be very diverse – from realistic, full of details
illustrations to very simplified, child-like, naive drawings. They are colorful,
narrating, there is always something happening. The characters are cute and
friendly.
• Comics or Graphic Novels – According to Wikipedia comics is a medium used to
express ideas by images, often combined with text or other visual information.
Comics frequently takes the form of juxtaposed sequences of panels of images.
Often textual devices such as speech balloons, captions, and onomatopoeia
indicate dialogue, narration, sound effects, or other information. Size and
arrangement of panels contribute to narrative pacing. Cartooning and similar
forms of illustration are the most common image-making means in comics.
• Books/ Publications/ Editorial – These illustrations include creating eye-
catching covers, giving a hint of what’s inside the book or magazine. This style
is very versatile and depends on the vision of the author and the subject of the
book.
• Advertising – This type of illustration is meant to grab clients’ or customers’
attention, and create a lasting impression on one big idea, brand, or product.

Downloaded by Evan Dungog ([email protected])

lOMoARcPSD|44536115

• Packaging – This type of illustration gives a perfect impression regarding the

product such as bakery products, canned goods, and others.
• Branding or Logo – This type of illustration must be simple, attention-grabbing,
and memorable such as mascots, cartooned version of employees, and the
product itself.
