Clauses of Concession
A CONCESSION is when one event does not stop or prevent another event, normally expressing surprise.
Some students confuse concession with contrast. Analyse the following sentences.
To talk about concession, we can use several conjunctions: although, even though, though,
anyway, but, notwithstanding, regardless, nevertheless, in spite of, despite, however, etc.
NOTE: " In spite of", " despite" have a similar meaning to "although" or "even though". BUT they
don't introduce clauses. They have different syntax. They are followed by nouns or gerunds
(verb + ing) They don't introduce a clause (subject + verb.)
Examples:
In spite of the bad weather, all the flights were on time. (noun)
Despite being affected by the hurricane, the city still received lots of tourists. (verb + ing)
Although we saw each other every day, we didn't really know each other. (clause)
Even though she spoke very quietly, he understood every word. (clause)
Some conjunctions, maybe most of them, behave in a different way; they appear in specific
position in the sentence. For instance, nevertheless.
Examples:
What you said was true but nevertheless unkind. (The use of ‘but’ is redundant but emphatic.)
She was very tired; nevertheless, she kept on working.
Our defeat was expected but it is disappointing nevertheless.
Formality: bear in mind that the use of conjunctions are well attached to how formal or informal
the language you are using is. For example, if you want to sound more formal, you can use:
nevertheless / nonetheless / notwithstanding
Examples:
I knew a lot about the subject already, but her talk was interesting nevertheless.
There are serious problems in our country. Nonetheless, we feel this is a good time to return.
Notwithstanding some members' objections, I think we must go ahead with the plan.
