Meaning of painting
Painting is the practice of applying paint or colour or other medium to a
solid surface.
A painting is an image (artwork) created using pigments (color) on a
surface such as paper or canvas. The pigment may be in a wet form,
such as paint, or a dry form, such as pastels.

Types of painting techniques

1. Oil painting: is the most widely known and common form of
painting that has been in existence. The outstanding facility with
which fusion of tones or colours is achieved makes it unique
among fluid painting mediums.

Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci

Jan van Eyck developed oil painting by mixing linseed oil and oil from nuts with diverse colours.
Micheal Angelo remains one of the most important oil painters in history. Other artist include:
Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, etc.

1. Water colour painting: This is a method where colors and water

are blended in order to produce a unique style of painting by artists.
Most of the watercolor paintings are made upon papers.

Some of the watercolour painter include: John James Audubon (1785-1851), Elizabeth Murray (1815-1882), Thomas Moran (1837-1926) famous
for landscape water colour etc.
1. Pastel painting is a form of artwork where pastels are used to
create a well-defined and thoughtful painting.

1. Acrylic painting: is a type of artwork where acrylic colors are used

which have a distinctive feature of drying fast on the applied medium.
The paint is known to be soluble in water, but are water-resistant when
dried on the paper.

5. Impasto: Impasto is a type of painting that makes the artwork feels

like standing out from the surface.

Vincent Van Gogh used this technique to create the various paintings. Other artist include: Rembrandt van Rijn, Jackson Pollock etc.

6. Coloured pencil: Even though colored pencils are more widely

known to be used amongst kids, they have begun to gain respect
amongst professional artists and painters.
7. Ink painting: Ink is used for drawing with a pen, brushes, or quill.
Ink paintings feel like magic when they’re made.

8. Fresco: Fresco comes from an Italian word which is obtained from

a Latin word. Fresco style is for those who want paintings on their
walls and ceilings. The techniques of fresco consist of mixing the
paints with water and applied on a thin layer of wet plaster.

9. Spray painting: In spray painting, aerosol paint comes out from

the pressurized container by controlling it with a valve. The
portion of the surface where a particular color is needed to be
applied is kept open, while the other portions are covered. This is
done so that the color does not spread to other portions of the
painting.

Class activities: Drawing and painting of some still life

objects.
