High Frequency Transformer: Your Best
Choice for ESP
High frequency transformer is proven to help reduce particulate matter
(PM) emission, while increasing energy efficiency and collecting
efficiency of the ESP so that emission from the dust particles can be
significantly reduced compared to the emissions encountered with
conventional transformer. The below points are some of the
advantages, which enable high frequency transformer to deliver
superior performance than conventional transformer.

 Ability to make a rapid increase or decrease in voltage

With the application of high frequency transformer, it is able to suppress the
power supply quickly and re-applied voltage when spark occurs, causing
reduction in the spark energy and the quantity of ionized gasses produced by the spark. As a result, it
leads to much shorter de-ionization intervals required to remove spark and evacuate charged particles
in order to restore the voltage and proceed with the normal ESP operation. Therefore, the effect of the
power interruption is relatively small. In contrast, by prolonging de-ionization power-down intervals, it will
result to an increased emission.
 Ability to offer a fast response to load changes
Since it has capability to enable quick voltage changes in order to be compatible with the appropriate
rapping adjustment, it helps to enhance ESP collecting efficiency.

 Ability to resist frequent short circuits

With its ability to significantly decrease the spark energy, it also helps to prevent the occurrence of short
circuit due to sparking that occurred between the CP and DE. Therefore, the erosion of the CP and DE
can be minimized. It also can extend the service life of the CP and DE to last for much longer period.

 A significant reduction in voltage ripple

With smaller voltage ripple, it is possible to achieve much higher average voltages for a given peak kV,
which significantly increases the corona current and hence improve the ESP efficiency.

 Increased migration velocity of dust particle

An increased migration velocity of dust particle towards CP contributes that the layers of collected dust
are more compact, and this facilitates the rapping process and decreases the probability of the dust
re-entrainment into the gas flow during rapping process.

ESP Performance Enhancement
via RDE & HFTR Upgrade at
Coal-fired Boiler ESP
Benefit

Application
550MWx10 Coal-fired Boiler ESP of Power Plant in Taiwan

Problem
The ESP has been operated for almost 20 years. The ESP became underperformed due to aging factor
with decreased reliability of internal parts. As a result, customer was encouraged to take action towards
ESP performance improvement. The government regulation in Taiwan requires emission to be below 28
mg/Nm3. However, customer expected to lower down emission to be below 15 mg/Nm3.

Solution

Tai & Chyun helped with data analysis and came up with the ESP upgrade solution. There are 6
mechanical fields in each chamber with 4 conventional transformers in each chamber, where rigid
discharge electrode (RDE) and high frequency transformer (HFTR) is recommended to be installed at
the 1st and 2nd field in all four chambers. Therefore, 8 pcs of 83kV, 1445mA HFTR and 16,128 pcs of
RDE were installed in total.

Benefit
By upgrading the ESP with RDE and HFTR in the upstream fields, where there is a high dust
concentration and the fine particle must be charged as quickly as possible, ESP dust collecting
efficiency can be enhanced and emission can be reduced down.

RDE can provide uniform and aggressive corona current density on the surface of the collecting plate.
Moreover, with better geometry and configuration, RDE can also increase migration velocity, allowing
for better collecting efficiency.
The application of HFTR can help to decrease kVA for the same amount of power applied to the field
from conventional transformer, offering faster spark response with less wasted spark current. It also
has significantly higher power factor (0.94), when compared to a conventional T/R (0.63). High
frequency transformer circuit can turn on and off over 250 times faster than the conventional one,
allowing for much faster control response and better intermittent energization control.

The plant’s emission before upgrade was at 20 mg/Nm3. After installing RDE and HFTR, the average
emission was reduced successfully to 11 mg/Nm3, indicating that the emission was improved at almost
43%.

HFTR Upgrade at Power Boiler
ESP at Pulp & Paper Plant

Application
25.4 MW Power Boiler ESP at pulp & paper plant in Thailand

Problem
Customer originally has very high emission at 229 mg/m3. Therefore, it is compulsory for them to
take some action towards ESP in order to solve emission problem.

Solution
It is recommended by Tai & Chyun to perform ESP upgrade
through an adoption of high frequency transformer (HFTR)
as it is considered to be one of the most optimal solutions
that can remarkably help to bring down emission.

Accordingly, 2 units of high frequency transformers were

installed in both 1st and 2nd field of ESP, where one ESP
consists of two fields in total.

Benefit
High frequency transformer is proven to provide better power factor. It operates at higher frequencies
(in cycles /sec), while it can translate to smaller transformers and faster control responses. With its
lower ripple, it is applicable to achieve much higher average voltages (kVDC) for a given peak kV,
leading to an improvement in the ESP collecting efficiency and reduction in emission.
After an installation, emission can be reduced from 229 mg/m3 down to 41 mg/m3, which shows a sig-
nificant improvement as below.

E SP FAQ
Session
What you should know about
High Frequency Transformer?

Question: Is it necessary to change controller if we want to install high

frequency transformer?

Answer: Typically, high frequency transformer (HFTR) integrates the control-

ler, the current limiting element and the T/R set functions into one compact.
Therefore, it does not need to change controller when upgrading conventional
transformer to HFTR.

Question: How much improvement can be reached if we change from

conventional T/R to high frequency transformer?

Answer: T/R set power output can be increased by 30%, when using the
same power input. With 30% increase in power, collecting efficiency of the
field will definitely improve.

Question: The field with the high frequency transformer has high arcing reaching up to 32, but
sometimes disappear on the next 12-hr shift. Is this a setting problem in controller?

Answer: This kind of behavior does not point out to controller settings issue. It is important to note that
the ESP may already have mechanical issues, particularly the arc problem from detached collecting plate
and spacers, which is usually found during maintenance outages. But besides internal mechanical issues,
there are still other factors that may cause the arcing. Severe air in-leakage from manholes and other
compartment covers may contribute to this issue by bringing in too much moisture inside or on the
insulators. Going around the ESP during operation can help to determine any air in-leakage sources by
listening to the “hissing” sound.

Question: How to increase frequency transformer 50-25,000 Hz?

Answer: In high frequency transformers, the IGBT full bridge

circuit is used after the rectified three-phase supply. It
converts the DC bus to a high frequency AC waveform that
feeds the next stage. Q1 and Q4 conduct simultaneously and
then Q3 and Q2. The output then passes through an L-C
network, which replaced the current limiting reactor (CLR)
before it is fed to the primary side of the transformer windings.
