Meaning

■ The learning process in which students get directly


involved and learn by experience, is called 'Active
learning’ i . e. students involving themselves in
meaningful learning activities and thinking about
what they are doing find place in 'Active learning
'.
Definition
■ Active learning is " anything that involves students
in doing things and thinking about the things they
are doing” (Bonwell & Eison. 1991)
■ "Active learning is a method of learning in which
students are actively or experientially involved in
the learning process. There are different levels of
active learning, depending on student -
involvement " (Weltman)
■ "Anything course - related that all students in a
class session are called upon to do other than
simply watching, listening and taking notes"
( Felder & Brent. 2009)
Principles of active learning
■ Effort produces Achievement
■ Learning is about making connections
■ We learn with and through others
■ The teacher matter
■ Focused teaching promotes accelerated learning
■ All students should experience a ‘thinking curriculum’

Effort Produces Achievement

■ For a long time American have operated on the belief that


inherited intelligence mainly determines academic
achievement
■ Given the right conditions and support, almost everyone
can achieve at high levels
Learning Is About Making Connections

■ Knowledge is a “Constructive process”. We learn


by adding new knowledge to the knowledge we
already have and integrating it with that
knowledge.
With Learn With and Through Others

■ Most learning is done in a setting in which others are


present. We teach one another, exchange ideas,
reinforce concepts, solve problems, debate ideas, and
challenges assertions with others
The Teacher Matter

■ All teachers in the school in a given subject taught as well


as the best teacher, the result would be for higher student
achievement, throughout the school.
■ The quality of the teaching is the key to school
Improvement.
Focused teaching promotes accelerated
learning
■ The key to accelerating learning lies in matching
instruction to the level of the learner. Teaching that
aligns with instruction is referred to as “Focused
teaching “.
All students should experience a
‘thinking curriculum’
■ It is
a common belief that some people are born smart and
others not, and that there is nothing that can be done it.
■ Challenging tasks that support deep thinking will stimulate
intelligent behaviour
