Passage (13 – 15)
X, Y and Z are neighbours. They are aware that their town has water shortage, especially in summer.
X built a house with a ‘rainwater harvesting’ system. He said this would collect monsoon water and
send it back to the groundwater instead of letting it run off into drains. It would raise the level of the
water table. Their driveway was made with ‘permeable-paver’ tiles that allowed rainwater to seep
and recharge the water table.
Y said she had taught her family good ‘water’ habits. They has bucket baths, did not leave taps
running, watered their plants in the evening, and used biodegradable detergents and soaps that did
not pollute the soil. They drank only as much water as they wanted and did not waste. They had also
placed a brick in their toilet cistern to decrease the amount of water used for flushing.
Z’s family had bought a large storage tank, and installed a new booster tube-well pump to fill it.
They paid their water tax regularly. Their new washing machine used less water than hand washing
clothes. They had enough water through the summer months
