Assignment 1

Q. 1 Knowing that α = 20° , determine the tension (a) in cable AC,

(b) in rope BC

Q. 2 Three cables are used to tether a balloon as shown. Knowing that

the balloon exerts an 800-N vertical force at A, determine the tension
in each cable.
Q. 3 knowing that the tension in one rope is 120 N, determine by
trigonometry the magnitude and direction of the force P so that the
resultant is a vertical force of 160 N

Q. 4 Two forces are applied as shown to a hook support. Knowing that

the magnitude of P is 35 N, determine by trigonometry (a) the required
angle α if the resultant R of the two forces applied to the support is to
be horizontal, (b) the corresponding magnitude of R.

Q. 5 Knowing that the coefficient of friction between the 25-kg block

and the incline is μs = 0.25, determine (a) the smallest value of P
required to start the block moving up the incline, (b) the corresponding
value of β.
Q. 6 Determine the range of values of P for which equilibrium of the
block shown is maintained.

Q. 7 A 200-N block rests as shown on a wedge of negligible weight.

The coefficient of static friction μs is the same at both surfaces of the
wedge, and friction between the block and the vertical wall may be
neglected. For P = 100 N, determine the value of μs for which motion
is impending. (Hint: Solve the equation obtained by trial and error.)
