Week 6 Tutorial Problems

Solution of first and second order differential equations using Laplace
Transforms
Solve the following first order differential equations using Laplace
Transforms
1. f’(t) + 2f(t) = 1 given f(0) = 0

2. f’(t) – f(t) = e-t given f(0) =-1

Extension questions
Solve the above first order differential equations using analytical
methods from weeks 3 & 4.
Compare and contrast the two methods.

Solve the following second order differential equations using Laplace

Transforms
3. f’’(t) -5f’(t) +6f(t) = 0 given f(0) = 2 f’(0) = 2

4. f’’(t) -3f’(t) +2f(t) = 2e-4t given f(0) = 0 and f’(0) = 1

5. 2f’’(t) – f’(t) –f(t) = e-3t given f(0) = 2 and f’(0) = 1

6. f’’(t) – f’(t) = 2 given f(0) = 0 and f’(0) = 0

Extension questions
7. f’’(t) -3f’(t) - 4f(t) = 5et given f(0) = 0 f’(0) = 1
